Two-time Tony Award winner Chita Rivera died Tuesday. She was 91.

Her death was confirmed to The New York Times by her daughter, Lisa Mordente; a cause of death was not disclosed.

Apple TV+ is subbing out “The Sound of Music” for “Sweeney Todd.” The first trailer for Season 2 of “Schmigadoon!,” the streamer’s musical parody series, has been released.

Created by Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, Season 1 of “Schmigadoon!” was a riff on the basic concept of “Brigadoon,” a 1947 Tony-winning musical. Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key lead the cast as Melissa and Josh, a long-term couple in a rocky patch of their relationship. The pair stumble upon the remote town of Schmigadoon and soon discover they can’t leave until they understand true love: something the magical realm determined the partners weren’t in. Every episode featured multiple original musical numbers, patterned from “Brigadoon” and other musicals of its era, all written by Paul.

A new Broadway season has started, and there are currently seven productions of musicals set to open this fall. Could we be seeing any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Below is an overview of the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative team, and the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.

“Almost Famous” (previews begin October 3; opens November 3)

In this stage musical adaptation of Cameron Crowe’s 2000 Academy Award-winning film, William Miller is an idealistic 15-year-old aspiring music journalist. When Rolling Stone magazine hires him to go on the road with an up-and-coming band, he is thrust into the rock-and-roll circus, where his love of music, his longing for friendship, and his integrity as a writer collide.

This musical has a book written by Crowe, who also co-wrote the score with Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Tom Kitt.

According to the combined predictions of Gold Derby’s users as of this writing, “Les Misérables: The Staged Concert” is the front-runner to win Best Musical Theater Album at this year’s Grammy Awards with 11/2 odds. Recordings of the classic musical have previously received two Grammy nominations in this category, winning on both bids: first in 1988 for the original Broadway cast recording, and then in 1991 for the complete symphonic recording. However, I think we might be underestimating “Girl From the North Country.”

In 2015 most of our users were predicting the original Broadway cast recording of “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” to prevail, yet “Beautiful” managed to beat it. The latter musical centered on the early career of legendary singer/songwriter Carole King, who has earned nine competitive Grammy nominations with four wins in her career. So its cast album was filled with songs voters had been familiar with for decades.

The Grammy Award nominations released today won’t do much for Broadway’s bottom line: Of the six nominees for Best Musical Theater Album, only one – Girl From The North Country, with music by Bob Dylan – is from a show currently on a Broadway stage.
