Maybe i'm fan girling or maybe it's the sentiment from being an 80's kid....but this movie is still as enjoyable watching it today as it was way back.
Watch it alone or with the family, fun music and themes.

This is the perfect movie for a slumber party or for just hanging out with your friends after school or on a Friday night. It's lots of fun, lots of laughs and you're guaranteed to be humming at least one tune from the movie when it's over. Helen Hunt is extremely young in this movie, and really funny. If you're looking for a romantic movie or a comedy or both, you've gotta see this! I'm 17 and my friends and I love watching this movie whenever we can.
It's actually quite hard to rate this film out of 10, because it really isn't a good movie. It's completely cheesy, makes very little sense, but it is fun.
You've got a very much pre-Sex And The City Sarah Jessica Parker and a young Helen Hunt who somehow manages to look and sound about 30 in this even though she would have been around 21 at the time it was made as best friends, trying to get on to a really dreadful looking TV dance show called Dance TV (how original) by throwing some very, very 80s shapes in very, very 80s outfits. Add to this a little romantic element with Richard Montgomery as the love interest, a bratty rich girl trying to cheat her way to winning the contest and you've got the whole plot, such as it is, right there.
Girls Just Want To Have Fun is just that - it's a fun movie, the kind of thing teen girls would have watched on a sleepover. It's colourful, the soundtrack is good in a very 1980s way, and it goes everything it needs to entertain. It's one of those movies that could never be remade or rebooted because it is SO very much of its time.
Richard Montgomery looks great in this movie, whatever happened to him by the way? As do Parker and Hunt. The acting is actually alright given the script and the audience it's aimed at.
Enjoyably silly, incredibly dated, but a nice watch. Not all movies need to gave a coherent plot or depth. Some are just there to be watched and forgotten.

As a movie, Girls Just Want to Have Fun is simple and cheesy. As an 80s time capsule full of nostalgia, it's highly entertaining. Maybe it's because I watched this movie a lot as a kid, but I couldn't stop grinning the whole time. I loved the music, I laughed at the jokes and I wanted a friend like Lynne. This isn't a great film, but it's not supposed to be. It's just supposed to be fun.
I just rewatched it on the comedy channel. It's such a feelgood movie. It makes you want to dance. I always wished for a sequel. I would love to see how the characters turned out years later. Sarah and Helen are great in this movie. And I think Sarah did alot of her own stunts because she was doing gymnastics at the time. The dancing is great and the music is pure 80's fun. The movie has a good storyline that moves along with just the right amount of suspense and timing. This is a fun, feelgood dance movie. I highly recommend it.
