The lions are roaring back — and this time, they've got some serious star power. At San Diego Comic-Con, Voltron star Sterling K. Brown gave fans a long-awaited update on the upcoming live-action reboot of the beloved '80s animated series. While tight-lipped on plot specifics, Brown couldn’t help but tease a few intriguing details — including the role of his high-profile co-star, Henry Cavill.
“He’s dreamy,” Brown said with a grin during the Paradise panel, where Collider was in attendance. “That’s all I’ll say.” But he didn’t stop there. Describing the film as “heartfelt… big and bodacious and dynamic,” the Emmy winner explained that post-production on the project is so ambitious, it's taking a full 48 weeks to complete.
That timeline would set Voltron up for a likely spring 2026 release — which lines up with previous reports that Amazon MGM Studios was targeting the blockbuster as part of its 2026 theatrical slate.

When Sterling K. Brown isn’t portraying the astute and grief-stricken Secret Service agent Xavier Collins in Hulu’s Paradise, the actor (recently nominated for his sixth Lead Actor in a Drama Series Emmy for the role) was filming Amazon MGM Studios’ live-action film adaptation of Voltron.
Speaking at a San Diego Comic-Con panel for the political thriller opposite series creator Dan Fogelman, the three-time Emmy-winning Brown took a moment to tease the upcoming movie, also starring Rita Ora, John Kim, Daniel Quinn-Toye and Henry Cavill.
“Rawson Marshall Thurber is the director, the screenwriter. I think he’s come up with a really wonderful vision to reintroduce something that we grew up with in the ’80s to the 2027 crowd,” Brown told the audience. “It’s heartfelt. It is big. It’s big, bodacious and dynamic, and that’s why it takes probably about 48 weeks of post-production to finish the thing off and get it together.

Like Voltron itself, the cast for the upcoming movie is assembling nicely. After years of attempting to get a live-action Voltron movie into theaters, the project is finally making progress at Amazon MGM under the direction of Rawson Marshall Thurber, best known for movies like Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and Red Notice. The film is based on Voltron: Defender of the Universe, itself a combination of two separate anime, Beast King GoLion and Armored Fleet Dairugger Xv. During its original run, Voltron was the top-rated syndicated animated series, so interest in adapting it into a feature film has been a high priority for over a decade.
Deadline reveals that Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, and John Kim have joined the cast of Voltron. They join Henry Cavill and Daniel Quinn-Toye in the upcoming film. Rawson Marshall Thurber will direct from a script he co-wrote with Ellen Shanman. Amazon MGM.

The live-action reboot of Voltron has officially been greenlit by Amazon MGM Studios. The animated franchise, which initially debuted in 1984, has been quite lucrative, producing a variety of television shows over the years, the most recent being Netflix's Voltron: Legendary Defender. Despite all these new additions and specials, a live-action adaptation has been in the wind for a while.
In fact, it was reported in 2022 that Rawson Marshall Thurber, director of the hit film Red Notice, had been assigned to write and direct the live-action Voltron film. However, it was still in the development stage, so many speculated it might even be canceled, especially given the complexity involved in producing these projects.

To talk about Peter Cullen's voice acting career is to take a trip through the last five decades of mainstream U.S. animation. The man has lent his voice to so many noteworthy cartoon series that it boggles the mind, including "Scooby-Doo and Scrappy-Doo," "The Smurfs," "Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends," "Voltron: Defender of the Universe," "Alvin and the Chipmunks," "Muppet Babies," "Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers," and "Invincible." But one cannot even begin to do justice to his body of work without touching on the iconic character that he's voiced across multiple animated shows and feature films for nearly 40 years now. Truly, at this point, Cullen is all but synonymous with his onscreen counterpart: Eeyore.
After debuting as the Autobots' intrepid leader in "The Transformers" in 1984, Cullen took over voicing the most relatable resident of the Hundred Acre Wood from the late Ralph Wright (who voiced...

In 1984, a lot of laws about what was and wasn't allowed in children's TV programming began to loosen. Throughout the decade, more and more companies became incredibly brazen about including advertising content directly into their TV shows, transforming many shows into 30-minute commercials for toys. An '80s child would watch a show, knowing they could soon hound their parents to buy them the toy counterparts of their favorite characters. This branding became deeply insidious, and many children of the 1980s grew up with a deep and abiding nostalgia for their favorite toy ads. Artistry, character, writing, storytelling, and mythology were all distant, tertiary concerns during this era, and the bulk of animated shows from the '80s are deeply, deeply terrible as a result.

Lego builder Leandro a.k.a. len_d69 submitted this fan-made Voltron: Defender of the Universe Lego set to Lego Ideas and it got the 10,000 votes it needed to pushed into actual development! What's so awesome about this, is that each individual Lego built lion combines to form the giant robot Voltron!
I'm just surprised that Lego had never done this before! They needed a fan to come in design it and push it through. I don't buy a lot of Lego playsets but this is one that I'd definitly consider dropping some cash on. Here's a description of the set from the creator:
This is one of the popular super robots in the 80's. Based on the Japanese Anime "Beast King GoLion", it is made up of 5 robotic lions that combines to form Voltron.A childhood favorite, I tried to recreate Voltron as faithfully as I could in both lion and combined form.

This past summer, Universal Pictures' parent company NBCUniversal acquired DreamWorks Animation for $3.8 billion, with Universal Pictures inheriting the studio's slate of projects in development. One of these projects was actually a live-action adaptation of Voltron, which was being quietly developed at the studio. Today we have word that the project is in fact moving forward at Universal, with the studio setting X-Men and Watchmen writer David Hayter to write the script.
Deadline reports that Tom Engleman (The Chronicles of Riddick, The Lone Ranger) is set to produce. DreamWorks Animation is also behind the animated series Voltron: Legendary Defender, which debuted on Netflix this summer. It isn't known if there will be any connection between the live-action project and the animated series.

For the better part of the past decade, a new Masters of the Universe movie has been trying to get off the ground, with several studios taking a crack at this beloved franchise. Sony has been developing the franchise since 2009, picking up the rights from Warner Bros. We reported back in January that McG entered talks to direct, although we haven't had any updates since then. For those who have been waiting for He-Man and the rest of these iconic characters to hit the big screen, DreamWorks TV has some comic relief for you today, with the animated spoof reality series The Real Masters of Eternia.
This hilarious eight-minute spoof takes footage from the 1980s animated series He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, and with the help of some crafty editing and new voice actors, turns these characters battling for Eternia into roommates, who have all moved into Castle Greyskull.

We haven't heard much on Lionsgate's Power Rangers reboot since Roberto Orci backed out of producing the movie back in September. We reported in January that production will begin sometime this year, which is getting closer to actually happening, now that The Wrap reports Dean Israelite (Project Almanac) is in talks to direct. The filmmaker is said to be a huge fan of the franchise, and he has also turned down a number of studio tentpole projects, waiting for the right one to come around.
The project is a theatrical reboot of the 1990s hit TV series Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, which followed a group of high school kids who attain super-human powers, making them masters of martial arts. Their powers also gave them the ability to control interconnecting robots, similar to the 1980s animated TV series Voltron: Defender of the Universe. The Hollywood Reporter has detailed an agreement between Verbinski's Blind Wink Productions and Microsoft to create a Kinect-based Xbla game for the 360 to be released sometime late in 2012 as well as additional content--whatever shape that may take--for other Microsoft devices. There's no detail on the duration of the exclusivity agreement or what additional devices, type of content this will entail. Each one has unique stats in terms of health and attack power, etc. at the start menu with slight different attacks. I chose the Black Lion because even in the cartoon, objectively...
