BEWARE OF FALSE REVIEWS & REVIEWERS. SOME REVIEWERS HAVE ONLY ONE REVIEW TO THEIR NAME. NOW WHEN ITS A POSITIVE REVIEW THAT TELLS ME THEY WERE INVOLVED WITH THE MOVIE. IF ITS A NEGATIVE REVIEW THEN THEY MIGHT HAVE A GRUDGE AGAINST THE FILM . NOW I HAVE REVIEWED OVER 200 HOLIDAY FILMS. I HAVE NO AGENDA.
In this film you meet There the nastiest, dirtiest kids you could ever meet and they've just decided to be in this year's pageant. But the town thinks they belong in the care of the local police. When the curtain finally goes up, a miracle begins.
What is great about this film is that it shows that all of us judge others. It does not however preach that. I love the fact that it shows that "All of us are born with certain cards" and "That you play the hand you were dealt".
Nice family Safe Film.

Many people have been involved in a church Christmas pageant at one time or another, so there was bound to be a story like this. Take a typical middle-class family (the Bradleys) involved in a typical middle-class church Christmas pageant, a little uptight and steeped in tradition, and throw in some lower-class ruffian kids (the Herdmans) who take starring roles. This movie is a little different from the novel The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, but that should be okay, because Barbara Robinson wrote them both. It seems like the book did say that the narrator figured that the Herdmans were going to hell, while the movie has her say she figured they were going to the devil. I suppose "devil" was supposed to be less offensive than "hell," but I'd rather have the narrator say "hell" like in the novel. Loretta Swit from M*A*S*H plays the mother directing the pageant. You might think this would be an unlikely role for her, but she does a good job.

This movie is so great on so many levels! One moment you are touched and the next you are rolling on the floor laughing! I think what makes this movie so enjoyable is the fact that we can all identify with it! We all have gotten roped into volunteering when we don't want to and we all know a family just like the Hermans! Watch it!!!!

This movie was such so touching to my daughter (who was approx 5 when she saw the show) My Best friend has 4 daughters who then ranged in ages 11 down to twins 6 yrs old. This had to be one of the most touching movies for these girls to ever view on t.v. The girls today are in their 20's and most have children of their own now and they all still bring up this movie at Christmas asking if its on this year? each year their mother and myself search around for it, we have written tv guide, asked every video rental store, no such luck. This year we are on the "MISSION" once again. We need your help in telling us where to buy the movie... The movie Family was so real and even at the young age of our girls back then they still bring up the movie and want it on.. I feel they could really relate to the Family at that time and Mary's tears when holding Baby Jesus, or when the boys stole the ham.. just too funny .. please any info on this great movie? could it be on television this year? Thank you for your time
best wishes to you all rene

I never knew this old movie existed until it was recently remade. It sounded like a cute idea, but the new movie is by some guy who makes kinda Jesus-y movies so I went for this old TV movie instead, which contains the only non-MASH performance I've ever seen from Loretta Swit (who's quite good).
It's very cute. It's kind of weird to see what passed for "bad kids" back then, since nowadays ... well, we all know how insane things have gotten. So its nostalgic to see kids being bad in the old-school way.
It's a very sweet movie that's generally pretty funny and has some insight. I'd recommend it if you're looking for something to watch at Christmas.

I never thought any tv movie could do justice to the classic novel on which this Christmas special is based. But this flick succeeds brilliantly. All the classic lines & situations from the book are here, along with some added surprises. (The ham, and the surprise visitor at the pageant!) The Herdmans are exactly how I pictured them, and their "house" is completely realistic as well- love the factories in the background! The supporting characters (especially Charlie, Alice Wendelken, and (I think his name is) Hobie Carmichael), are all perfectly cast. And the message of the book is perfectly preserved-- there's a pretty amazing moment with the young actress who plays Imogene Herdman, when she's looking at a picture of Mary & Jesus and starts to cry. For anyone who hasn't read the book (which is a masterpiece & one of the most hilarious books I've ever read), I at least recommend you getting a hold of this movie. It will help you remember the "true" meaning of Christmas.

At 48 minutes length, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" just made the cut from a short to a feature length film. It's based on a 1971 children's novel of the same title by Barbara Robinson. While it may be true to the book, as some reviewers have noted, it's not the great film that some rate it. It is good, but just slightly different as a Christmas movie. There are some laughs, but no big surprise at the end. And, it is dated culturally.
I agree with one reviewer about the little information about the kids. This might have been a better flick with more time to show the character that made these kids the "worst" in the world. Without that, it's a stretch here. Some folks may still enjoy this film today, but there are many more, including some very funny films out there, for viewing over the year-end holidays. This is one of the first roles that Loretta Swit had as the long-running MASH TV series came to and end the same year, 1983.

Such a wonderful story it's a shame that it isn't being aired anymore. Why not? I was a teacher's assistant in an elementary library for several years and I know many teachers keep this story alive, I don't know why the networks haven't.

When Dallas Jenkins, director of "The Chosen" TV series, said he'd cried when reading the original book and was now going to make a brand new cinema version of this Xmas story, and, despite leeriness of too many 10/10 reviews hyperventilating with superlatives, I decided to watch this 1983 TV Movie version to see what the story was all about,
It's a bad-kids-turn-good story in which the original author of both the book and the film script invites readers and viewers to reconsider their own hypocritical attitudes to the down-and-outs and underprivileged children of the world, and consider instead how God looks at sinners and their capacity for redemption in His caring hands, all of which is essentially the gospel message, and all the while using exaggerated humorous relief to make her point.
The story of the worst kids in the world revolves around the unsupervised mostly orphan Herdmen kids who are big bullies, smoking cigars, burning down buildings, starving cats, stealing, blackmailing, cussing, talking dirty, racial slurs, you name it, if they could think of it they did it.
The fact is children's literature has changed a lot 50 years on from 1972 till today in 2023. Values of what is acceptable for 7-10 year olds to read have changed greatly. Many parents would find the 1972 story a shockingly horrible story to read to their young children today.
Elsewhere, as one reviewer points out, the book is also "about the parson, the church ladies, and the church members. They are rendered as mean and small and uncharitable."
As the story progresses, the bad kids, despised by just about everybody in the story, INEXPLICABLY sign up to act in an Xmas Pageant about Jesus' birth, a story none of them is familiar with. They learn the Jesus story is "about a new baby, and his mother and father who were in a lot of trouble-no money, no place to go, no doctor, nobody they knew. And then, arriving from the East some rich friends."
When some of the 'bad' kids see their own life's situation reflected in the Jesus story and identify themselves in the story, the kids seem to become part of some less-than-convincing redemption story that challenge the adults perceptions of them: for example, Imogene Herdmen cries for a change and brother Larry donates a ham, which are not overwhelming tear-inducing narratives that make one want to watch, or read it again and again.
So what did this writer think of this TV version? The 1983 TV Movie version of this story, starring Loretta Swit of M. A. S. H. fame, was in this writer's opinion not only cheesy but poorly done and underwhelming.
Dallas will have his work cut out for him to write a workable script for this story. At the very least he will have to use his talent in writing character backstories to flesh out the main characters and make them more human, sympathetic and credible. What are the likes, dislikes and personalities of each child? What led to them becoming bullies? Moreover, why do the kids want to take part in the play? And finally, this writer wonders if the director can leave us with a really thought-provoking and memorable lesson applicable to our own lives? This writer hopes Dallas can live up to his reputation. This story needs it!

This movie should be shown on TV every year. It tells the true meaning of Christmas. It was funny in parts and touching in others. I only saw it on TV once or twice. I found a copy at the library and watched it with my daughter and her friend (age 10).They both loved it.
I thought the characters acted very realistically. The children were neither too cute and sweet nor too smart mouthed. In fact none of the children were smart mouthed or talked back. The characters consisted of people we all know. The dresses that the girls wore were very pretty and cute. It was nice to see girls wearing dresses instead of old jeans to church.
I can't say much more without giving too much away. This is a great movie and suitable for all ages. If you can't find it in the video store try your local library.

Wow. This show is amazing. Just recently, I watched it in my theater arts class and I was astonished on how great it was. My friend and I even cried, it was that touching. My school is doing this play for Christmas and I've had such a great time working with them and doing this play. The characters seem so real, it's amazing. The show is so touching, with a slight hint of hilarious. It has so many funny lines in it. It's really one of my favorites now. It's such a funny show, you definitely have to see it if you haven't. It draws you in right away and you can't stop watching it. Once you watch it, you'll be glad you did. It will definitely make you remember the true meaning of Christmas.

I thought of this movie just today but couldn't remember the name of it. I called my mom, who was a teacher at the time I saw the movie at school, and ask her if she remembered the movie so I could search for it online. She didn't help a bit. So, I called my brother to see if he remembered it and he had no clue. So I ended up just browsing threw all online Christmas movies to find it. Now I'm 23 years old and I watched that movie when I was in 3rd grade! I remember all of it! My teacher, where we watched the movie and everything! I have bought the movie and my Husband and I are taking it this year to our family get-together for our whole family to watch. A definitely Must See!!!

My 27 year old son said "dad this movie pleasantly surprised me" lol he thought they were "trying too hard" with the extra stuff st the beginning and I told him for chosen fans and fans of Dallas Jenkins work it was just added value.
The movie was great I took almost my whole entire family and it was the 1st movie my autistic 18 year old son sat thru all the way.
Very heart warming story with well acted parts. The girl who plays Imogen did amazing at conveying emotion. Of course Pete Holmes always delivers laughs! I even pulled a laugh of my own. At the end of the movie, I said the most disturbing part of the movie was seeing Gaius in slacks and a sweater vest heheh.

Great fun and laughs for sure but on second watching of trailer noticed I believe some important underlying serious messages about the real meaning of Christmas.
The main meaning is that is the birth of Christ.
The next main message is that when He was on earth He normally chose the most unlikely people to achieve things for Him from a worldly point of view, and they each protested that they thought that He had made a mistake choosing them and told Him they were sure that they would let Him down and not achieve what he had asked them to to do.
However, as things turned out they each grew into the task He had given them and achieved the task at hand brilliantly.
I have always believed that you cannot judge a book by its cover and that each of us is able to do so much more than we recognize in ourselves at first.
Trailer whetted my appetite hugely for anticipated November 2024 release.
