This is one of the classics that I love watching to this day. Vicki Lawrence and the whole cast made this show great. The Best episodes are the ones with Bubba, Iola and the cast. Just some of Mama's looks and expressions will make me laugh out loud. Naomi is also great. Wish the show would have stayed on the air longer but thank god for a show that will make you laugh out loud. They don't make them like this anymore and they should!
..Mama's Family is by far the best t.v show in re-runs right now..of course it's good clean fun...and it's hilarious...but lets face it .. the characters are perfect,Vinton plays a great Mama's boy...& Naomi could not have been better for Vint...the loose ,floozy type is the perfect contrast to any old fashioned grandmother, the fact that it's Mama is priceless.....Now any fan knows there are 2 different mama's family shows....pre Bubba, and post Bubba....watching Bubba's character develop is such a great transformation ..he not only becomes a good actor, but a great addition to the show...along with Iola..Borlyn,(I think that's right,no D at the end).. ...I have seen every episode at least 5-6 times, and i continue to tape the episodes off tbs in the AM..at this point I must have 25-30 tapes with every episode 3times over ,just in case they don't wise up and ..PUT THE SHOW ON DVD ALREADY!!!!..well I know I'm safe ..and if I wear out my tapes...I got plenty more.... ..there is just something about the show that makes my day start out right,2 episodes of Mama, and I'm good to go ,until tomorrow...and I love watching and thinking to myself ,what a great show that has stood the test of time,easily...how funny is it when Bubba wears the tee with his name iron-ed on the front in the 80's glitter ...and the true viewers know the episode where mama says.."no,at my house when the phone rings I run in circles yellin what'll I do ,what'll I do,what'll I do!!! GOTTA LOVE MAMA,and my mama t-shirt gets more compliments than any other tee I own...I have so much more to say but I'll quit now..as long as it airs I'll watch ..and when it 's pulled I'll probably watch more...thanks
Loved this show from the day it premiered in 1983 until the day it ended it 1990. I remember being bitterly disappointed when NBC cancelled it in 1984. When it was revived for first-run syndication, I was skeptical if it could be as funny without seasoned pros like Rue McClanahan and Betty White, but the new "unknown" cast members quickly made me forget about the old as they made those characters their own. This is one of the few programs that made me laugh out loud during every single episode. But like the Beverly Hillbillies, this show was looked down upon by a lot of la-dee-dah people (as Mama would say) who thought they were above the lowbrow humor. Who cares? I know whenever I need a good laugh, I can always count on that cranky family from Raytown, USA.
I first discovered this show in 2000 and I loved it right away. This show is not meant for those who expect it to be realistic. It is meant for those who want to take a break from everyday life and just have a laugh. I eagerly look forward to 5:00 am every weekday so I can watch this show. As soon as theme comes on I am instantly in a good mood. The entire cast is marvelous. I recommend anyone who has not seen to tune in to TBS on weekday mornings at 5:00 Central Time! Okay, so the earlier seasons (1 and 2) were great because of the appearances of Carol Burnett playing daughter Eunice, but even the later seasons were funny. I didn't think Beverly Archer was as funny as Carol, but I have to admit, when I hear that "Knock Knock" I immediately start to laugh!
This is one of the best shows ever on television. This is the one I could watch forever. But the show really took off when it went into syndication. I like how they worked the name of the city of Raytown into everything, such as Ray-Mart, K-Ray(the radio station) and other goofy stores like The Donut Hut. Too bad the show ended with an open end as they could have gone on for a few more years with the baby storyline. And did anyone else notice that each of the five characters had a specific color they always wore? Iola had pink, Bubba had green, Naomi had yellow, Vint had brown and Thelma had blue/purple?

Thelma 'Mama' Harper: I've got a better idea Vinton... how about you guess which hand I'm gonna smack you upside the head with?
