Location scouts looked at sites in Texas, Florida, and Alabama. They ultimately chose Georgia because of access to local racetracks, crew availability, and incentives offered by the state Film Commission.
Due to the start of Kenny Rogers' concert tour beginning on March 21, 1982, Rogers had to complete all of his scenes by March 19 that year. As such, other cast members were required to film any further necessary reaction shots after Rogers had completed all of his shots in front of the camera.
