Sixteen years after working together on Wanted, director Timur Bekmambetov and actor Chris Pratt are re-teaming for a sci-fi thriller called Mercy, which just started filming this week – and Bekmambetov has celebrated the start of filming by sharing a picture from the set! This image reveals that the film is taking advantage of the virtual production method known as The Volume, which uses LED panels as backdrops.

Sporting a screenplay written by Marco Van Belle (Arthur & Merlin), Mercy will be telling a story that is “set in the near future when capital crime has increased” and follows “a detective (Pratt] who is accused of a violent crime and forced to prove his innocence.”

Bleecker Street’s I’m Your Man opens on 12 screens in seven markets, expanding to another 15 next week in a rare platform release banking on strong word of mouth for the well-reviewed, 94% Certified Fresh film that’s Germany’s entry for the 2022 International Feature Oscar race.

Helmed by Unorthodox director Maria Schrader, the sci-fi romantic comedy earned star Maren Eggert the Best Actress Silver Bear at this year’s Berlin Film Festival.

Co-star Dan Stevens supported the film on social and in a Today show appearance Wednesday. He’ll be at a Q&a at the Landmark in LA on Saturday.

Initial openings include NY, LA, San Francisco, Boston, Washington, D.C., Phoenix and Dallas. Bleecker plans a small expansion in those markets as well next week. The film has a 17-day exclusive theatrical window. Deadline review here,

Updated: A lack of major new openings for New Line/Warner Bros’ Mortal Kombat saw the franchise reboot slide to a confirmed $3m weekend takings in international markets for its fourth session, a fall of 54%. International total is $32.8m.

Top international territory remained Australia, with estimated takings of $1.3m. Next best markets Russia and Spain were far behind.

The Auschwitz Report, Slovakia’s contender for the International Feature Oscar, tells the true story of two Slovakian Jews who escape Auschwitz in a bid to tell the world about the Nazi atrocities taking place in the concentration camp.

Based on the book Escape From Hell by one of the runaways, Alfréd Wetzler, the film has been realized in uncompromising detail by director Peter Bebjak. It pictures the brutal reality of everyday life in the early days of Auschwitz, the sacrifices made to alert allies to the horrors, and the crushing realization that the world was not quite ready to hear about what was taking place behind the barbed wire.

Bebjak tells Deadline during the film’s Contenders International panel that he wanted to tell Wetzler and Rudolf Vrba’s story to remind the world that past mistakes should not be repeated at a time when populism is on the march.

The Key Buyers Event: Digital Edition is hosted by Russian film body Roskino.

Two projects from Russian director Fedor Bondarchuk are part of the inaugural Key Buyers Event: Digital Edition, the virtual content market hosted by Russian film body Roskino.

Supported by the Russian Ministry of Culture and Moscow Government, the event will go live on June 8. It will include presentations from Russian sellers, with buyers and producers from over 40 countries registered.

Bondarchuk’s first TV series Psycho, centring on a successful psychiatrist who is mentally unwell, will premiere at the event. It is co-produced by Art Pictures Studio and Nmg Studio.

Russia’s Key Buyers Event: Digital Edition, a virtual follow-up to last year’s inaugural initiative hosted by national promotional body Roskino, has unveiled a program featuring new Russian works and a host of local and international speakers.

Running June 8-15, the event will showcase more than 300 Russian projects to international buyers, including films, drama series, animation and non-scripted formats, encompassing many of the countries top companies and talent. Involved are new works from Russian major Art Pictures, which as Deadline revealed will be shopping a doc about celebrated filmmaker Sergei Bondarchuk, Central Partnership’s drama Chernobyl: Abyss, which will show footage, and Timur Bekmambetov’s V2. Escape from Hell, which Deadline broke the news on earlier this year.

The market says it will feature buyers and producers from more than 40 countries and has signed up Rtl, AMC Networks, Mars Cgv, Wild Bunch, Beta Film, Koch Media, and Iqiyi to date.

Exclusive: Diego Tinoco, best known for the Netflix series, On My Block, and Siddiq Saunderson of Hulu’s Wu-Tang: An American Saga, will co-star In R#J, a modern-day adaptation of the Shakespearean classic Romeo and Juliet from producers Timur Bekmambetov and Igor Tsay. Carey Williams is directing the film from a script he co-wrote with Rickie Castaneda.

Tinoco will take on the role of Tybalt. Saunderson is Mercutio. Additional cast includes Camaron Engels (Malibu Rescue) as Romeo, Francesca Noel (Selah and the Spades) as Juliet, and Rj Cyler (Power Rangers) as Benvolio.

Following the premiere of each 10-minute episode on The Tonight Show‘s YouTube channel, it will air as part of The Tonight Show encore episode on NBC from 11:35 Pm-12:35 Am. For the first time in nearly two decades, Rosalynn McGinnis is thinking about a future that doesn’t include Henri Piette, her former stepfather and the man she says allegedly held her captive for 19 years.

“My future seems bright — a lot brighter,” she tells People in an exclusive interview. “Life still is hard, but it’s not near as hard as it ever was with him.

One of the few people who can begin to understand the tragedy that Rosalynn McGinnis endured is Jaycee Dugard.

Dugard was 11 years old when she was taken from South Lake Tahoe, California, by Phillip Garrido and held captive for 18 years before being rescued along with her two children in 2009.

After regaining her freedom, Dugard launched the Jayc Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit that helps survivors recovering from long-term abuse to transition into “normal” life. She and her organization have been helping McGinnis since the latter escaped captivity in June 2016 — 19 years after, McGinnis says, she was allegedly kidnapped from school by Henri Piette,...

Stephen Fry has filmed a one-off survival programme with Bear Grylls.

Grylls revealed that the broadcaster joined him for an upcoming Wild Weekends show, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Speaking at the launch of his new Discovery Channel show Escape from Hell, Grylls said: "We were in crazy weather conditions, 1,000ft wall climbs and camping out in caves, and climbing down massive waterfalls.

"He was exhausted and broken, but amazing."

Grylls added that the pair became quite close during their experience, saying: "There was lots of 'Good night, general', and 'Good night, darling'."

Jonathan Ross and Miranda Hart have previously filmed Wild Weekends episodes.

A lavish event promoting Discovery Networks International‘s new Bear Grylls survival series Escape From Hell went up in flames Wednesday night — sort of. As part of the stunt, Grylls rappelled down the side of London’s historic Battersea Power Station. As he did so, flames were projected onto the side of the landmark building. The flames were evidently so lifelike that a witness put in an emergency call summoning the London fire brigade. Once on the scene, firefighters said they “quickly realized it wasn’t an incident for us.” Discovery is launching the show on the Discovery Channel in 224 markets. Bear Grylls sparked fears that Battersea Power Station in London caught fire on Wednesday (September 25).

A stunt to launch his new TV show Bear Grylls: Escape From Hell projected flames on the famous landmark. Firefighters then received a call that the building was on fire.

Grylls was abseiling down Battersea Power Station when the flames came up from the ground, as rehearsed.

A fire brigade spokesman said: "We were called at 7.50pm. We attended and as soon as we got there we realised it wasn't an incident for us."

He added: "We take every call seriously."

Grylls recently presented a special edition of BBC One's Songs of Praise in celebration of the first anniversary of the creation of the Wales Coast Path.
