Director Sultan Ahmed's wife of that time Shammi shared a warm rapport with Amitabh Bachchan and this was purely the main reason Amitabh signed this film. Incidentally, Shammi was also a production assistant for the movie She also dubbed for a character who scolds Satyen Kappu in the beginning of the movie.
Irrfan Khan had gone to see the shooting of the film as a child as the film was shot in his home town.
Amitabh's close association with Rekha was made public when Amitabh beat up a local villager who came on the films set.The villager was making rude remarks toward Rekha. The man looked at Rekha and asked Amitabh " You are leaving your wife for this woman? She has had affairs with the whole film industry." He kept on taunting Rekha when Amitabh came to her rescue and got into a fist fight. The villager got beaten up to a bloody pulp. In the evening the villager returned with several other men for Amitabh's blood. It turned out that the villager was the son of a prominent man (sarpanch) of the village. The 25 men all gathered outside the guest house yelling for Amitabh to come out. That is when Amjad Khan came out and pleaded with the villagers to calm down. He promised that Amitabh would leave first thing in the morning. That is exactly what happened. True to his word, made sure the entire unit of Ganga Ki Saugandh left the village.
Sultan Ahmed first narrated the subject to Shatrughan Sinha during the shooting of " Heera". He wanted Shatrughan for the lead role.
