In the far future, Earth and the known universe is ruled by a corrupt empire called The Terran Federation that controls and oppresses it's citizens by drugging the food and water and the Terran Federation crushes it's enemies by either executing them or exiling them to a prison planet. A man named Roj Blake discovers that he was once a rebel leader and he had been captured and brainwashed by the Terran Federation and has no memories of his past. But, The Terran Federation has Blake stand trail and wrongly convicted of molesting children and Blake is exiled to the prison planet Cygnus Alpha. Upon escaping from the prison ship London, Blake and convicts: space pirate Jenna Stannis and computer expert Kerr Avon gain control of an abandoned alien spacecraft which they call "The Liberator". Soon joined by thief Vila Restal. Muscleman Olag Gan. Telepath Cally. The mobile supercomputer Orac and The Liberator's computer Zen. Blake and the Liberator set out to fight back against the Terran Federation and free the galaxy from it's rule. But, the evil Supreme Commander Servalan is assigned to hunt down Blake and sends out the vengeful one-eyed Federation military officer Space Commander Travis to hunt down and eliminate Blake and Blake and the Liberator crew become a legend and they engage the Terran Federation in a galaxy wide battle for freedom which they cannot possibly win.

*spoilers* Avon has united the various anti-Federation forces and given them the antidote to the drugs the Federation use to keep their populations docile. For all intents and purposes the war is over and the rebels have won. He goes in search of Blake to use as a figurehead to lead the new regime but ironically at the hour of their greatest triumph the heroes are surrounded and gunned down by Federation troopers. However whilst when Avon shoots Blake his weapon creates a bloody impact wound when the Federation troopers shoot the rest of the 7 none of them are visibly harmed. It may be that they are actually only stunned.
