When production began in June 1976, Deidre Hall (Electra Woman) found herself also taking the role of Dr. Marlena Evans on Days of Our Lives (1965), but trying to keep up with the parallel tapings devoured all of her time and energy. Her work on "Electra Woman" only lasted 8 weeks, but she's endured on "Days of Our Lives" for over 45 years.
Michael Lembeck's character, Kaptain Kool, is frequently regarded as a ripoff of Fonzie from "Happy Days," but the actual inspiration is older and more personal. His father, Harvey Lembeck, (who was credited as a comedy consultant) was renowned for a very similar characterization of a bumbling biker named Eric Von Zipper in the series of "Beach Party" movies from the 1960s.
The Osmonds wrote and produced all of the first season's songs, as well as provided accompaniment for Kaptain Kool and the Kongs. The Kroffts parted ways with the Osmonds in 1977, when the production of Donny and Marie (1975) relocated near the family's home in Utah. Tommy Oliver produced the music for the second season.
During the first season, the producers tried to capitalize on the glam/glitter rock craze by having Kaptain Kool and the Kongs dress in bizarre costumes and paint their faces with glittery makeup. Between seasons, Michael Lembeck (Kaptain Kool) shaved off his long hair for a role in the film Os Rapazes da Companhia C (1978), so for season two, they stuck a wig and hat on him and completely overhauled the band's look, trading in the glitz for muted polyester and denim.
