‘Only Murders in the Building’ production designer Patrick Howe on how to ‘keep things fresh’ to ‘feel like the first time for audience’
Image
" I'm always thrilled about it and I’m always trying to do the best work," two-time Emmy-winning production designer Patrick Howe says about scoring his third consecutive nomination for Only Murders in the Building. Howe explains in Gold Derby's Meet the Experts: TV Production Designers panel that the challenge "on an ongoing series, with new material, is trying to keep things fresh and have it feel like the first time for audience; that they can see new content and look at characters in a new way and always approaching it like it's like it's a first season." (Watch our full interview above.)

‘Awards Magnet’: Kathy vs. Britt, Noah vs. Adam, and all the drama over drama — including casting!
Image
The Awards Magnet team is back to dish all the drama over drama at the 2025 Emmys.

While senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Denton Davidson agree on who will win most categories, they fiercely clash on others like Best Drama Series (The Pitt vs. Severance), Best Drama Guest Actress (Merritt Wever vs. Kaitlyn Dever), and Best Drama Casting (The Pitt vs. The White Lotus). Oh, the humanity!

In the lead races, they debate the closely watched contests of Kathy Bates vs. Britt Lower for Best Drama Actress, and Noah Wyle vs. Adam Scott for Best Drama Actor. Does Bates have an uphill climb because she's the only Emmy nominee from her show, Matlock? Or could Lower take her down as part of a Severance sweep? They also note how Wyle submitted the season finale of The Pitt instead of his heralded breakdown episode, while Scott put forth the absolute best option he could have,...

Lord of the Rings & Star Trek Stars Seek SAG-AFTRA Positions in Upcoming Union Election
Image
Oscar-nominated actor Sean Astin, best known for his roles in iconic movies like TheLord of the Ringstrilogy, The Goonies, and Rudy, is seeking a new title. Deadline reports that Astin has submitted a bid for and will run for president of SAG-AFTRA, the 160,000-member union that represents actors. The union is currently headed up by Fran Drescher, who has been president of SAG-AFTRA since 2021.

Running on Astin’s ticket is Michelle Hurd, known as Raffi Musiker from Star Trek: Picard, as well as roles in Blindspot and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Hurd also recently appeared in the Netflix hit, You, as psychologist Dr. Val. Hurd is running for secretary-treasurer of SAG.

Sean Astin To Run For SAG-AFTRA President
Image
The Lord of the Rings actor Sean Astin is seeking to replace SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher in the upcoming union election.

Astin has submitted a bid to lead the 160,000-member organization, Deadline confirmed Friday. Also on his ticket are Michelle Hurd for secretary-treasurer, Joely Fisher for president of the Los Angeles Local Board, Lisa Ann Walter for first vice president of the Local Board, and David Jolliffe to return for second vice president.

If elected, Astin would follow in the footsteps of his mother Patty Duke, the Valley of the Dolls and The Miracle Worker actress who became the second woman to ever run the then-Screen Actors Guild in 1985. She held the position for three years.

Astin has previously served on five separate SAG-AFTRA negotiating committees, including the most recent contract won after a historically long, 118-day strike in 2023. He is also a member of SAG-AFTRA National and LA local boards,...

Sean Astin to Run for SAG-AFTRA President, Fran Drescher a Question Mark for Another Bid (Exclusive)
Image
In 1985, Valley of the Dolls and The Miracle Worker actress Patty Duke became the second-ever woman to lead the Screen Actors Guild as president, a position she filled for three years.

Now, decades later, her son Sean Astin is seeking to follow in her footsteps. The actor, perhaps best known for his role as the loyal hobbit hero Samwise Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings, is running for president of the current iteration of the film and TV actors’ union, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

In an interview, Astin pointed to his years on national and L.A. Local boards and on five separate negotiating committees as key preparatory steps for the top job at SAG-AFTRA. “It feels like this moment is a culmination of all of that work,” he said. “The time feels like it’s absolutely right and I’m excited to do it.”

Fran Drescher, who...

Image
The Emmys 2025 race is officially a high-stakes bloodbath, with the voting open and the snubs already brewing. After Shōgun broke records last year with 18 wins, including Outstanding Drama Series, making it the first non-English language series to do so, all eyes are now on who’s next to rewrite history. As far as the stats royalty goes, Julia Louis-Dreyfus holds eleven wins for Best Actress, and Edward Asner holds the Best Actor title for seven Emmys. And let’s not forget that Saturday Night Live still reigns supreme with 95 total Emmys. Will The Bear top its own record of 11 comedy wins from 2024 this time? Or will Hacks pull an upset after dethroning it in the top slot?

From comedy chaos to prestige drama and killer costumes, the 2025 Emmys are stuffed tighter than a Bear sandwich. With The Bear sharpening its knives across Comedy Series, Sound Editing, Writing, and acting races,...

‘Only Murders in the Building’: After surprise success at SAG, how big can Season 4 get at the Emmys?
Image
Last year, Only Murders in the Building scored its most Emmy nominations yet with 21 — 10 more than the total it nabbed the year prior for its second season and four more than it earned for Season 1. But can it go even bigger this year with Season 4?

The murder mystery is coming off its best winter awards run following double surprise victories at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for Martin Short's performance and comedy ensemble. They are the show's first major industry prizes — perhaps a preview of its first major Emmy win? Only Murders in the Building has won seven Emmys from 49 nominations for its first three seasons, but all have been at the Creative Arts Emmys.

The Hulu series has 35 submissions across 16 categories for Season 4. Let's take a look at its Emmy prospects.

55 Years Ago, Roger Ebert Wrote 1 of the Best X-Rated Exploitation Movies of All Time
Image
Roger Ebert was a complicated character. He was the ultimate populist critic, bringing a love of cinema to the masses, but he could also be censorious, savaging films he saw as politically incorrect. Fans who recall his scathing takedown of the future classic Blue Velvet may be surprised to learn that Ebert wrote one of the most extravagant exploitation movies of all time: Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, a show business satire so extreme that it earned an X rating.

Filmmaker Russ Meyer was famous for witty, gritty independent pictures starring domineering women with outrageous topographical features. Roger Ebert was an early champion of Meyer's films, and together they created what the critic called "a rock horror exploitation musical" that does for music industry melodramas what RoboCop does for action blockbusters. Panned upon release but certified fresh today, Beyond the Valley of the Dolls adds a fascinating dimension...

‘Wicked,’ ‘Nosferatu,’ ‘Penguin,’ Win at Art Directors Guild Awards
Image
Wicked, Nosferatu, Conclave, Shogun, The Penguin, Fallout and Squid Game were among the winners at the Art Directors Guild Awards on Saturday night.

The 29th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards were handed out by the Art Director’s Guild (Adg, IATSE Local 800) at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown during an event hosted by comedian Rachael Harris.

The Adg wins will have the attention of those looking for signs of who will take the Academy Award for production design. The winner of the Adg’s fantasy film honor have taken home the production design Oscar three times in the past six years, with Poor Things, Dune and Black Panther all going on to win the Oscar. The period film winner also won the Oscar twice during this period, with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Mank taking home statues. But in 2023, Babylon took home the Adg period win, but...

Russ Meyer
Supervixens - Donald Munro - 19517
Russ Meyer
One would expect that the second instalment of Russ Meyer's Vixen trilogy would in some way follow on from the first film. Thinking that would be a mistake. SuperVixens has precious little to do with Vixen, in much the same way as Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls is unconnected with Valley Of The Dolls. There are of course some similarities between the two sexploitation comedies, and any other Russ Meyer film for that matter: scarlet as a motif for sex; large breasted, sexually dominant women; the bare wire frame of a mattress; nature and nudity.

Clint Ramsey (Charles Pitts), a mechanic at a gas station, receives a phone call from his partner SuperAngel (Shari Eubank). During the call SuperAngel hears the voice of a flirtatious customer, SuperLorna (Christy Hartburg), and goes ballistic, threatening to burn down their house. Clint rushes home. On his return he is subjected to a.

If Donatella Versace Leaves Her Namesake Fashion House, Will Hollywood Follow?
Image
There’s a scene in “The Devil Wears Prada” where Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly is fighting to keep her top fashion magazine job. Over coffee in Paris, Priestly slips a piece of paper to her boss containing the names of “designers, photographers, editors, writers, models — all of whom found by me, nurtured by me and have promised me they will follow me whenever and if ever I choose to leave.” Naturally, the boss reconsidered and Priestly won the day.

A stylist friend recently recalled this scene to me in the context of Donatella Versace, the lauded designer (and star in her own right) who has been the face of her namesake fashion house for nearly 30 years. A January report said Versace’s contract with her brand’s owner, Capri Holdings, expires in February. Chatter from Milan wonders if that deal will be renewed.

It would be a fascinating pivot for Versace,...

The Best Dressed Stars at the Golden Globes
Image
It’s clear Hollywood stylists worked through the holiday season, securing an abundance of high style in time for Jan. 5, from haute-couture gowns to bespoke suits and veritable piles of diamonds and status watches, all to ensure stars achieved maximum glamour at the 2025 Golden Globes.

Indeed, “glamour” was the word of the night, especially among actresses who embraced an old-Hollywood vibe, in looks that distinctly channeled 1950s or ’60s style, evoking the likes of Grace Kelly in High Society, Audrey Hepburn in Charade or Faye Dunaway in The Thomas Crown Affair. From hair and makeup to jewelry, the addition of evening gloves and exquisite satin gowns — some indeed taking their cues from archival designs — the women’s style at this year’s Globes felt equal parts captivating and sophisticated. When Wicked director Jon M. Chu accepted his award for cinematic and box office achievement, he mentioned the work of everyone...

Sharon Tate, a name that once sparkled with promise, became synonymous with tragedy the night of 1969. The following contains spoilers for Only Murders in the Building Season 4, Episode 10, "My Best Friend's Wedding," now streaming on Hulu.

Every Clue to the Killer in Only Murders in the Building Season 4
Image
Only Murders in the Building spends much of Season 4 weaving yet another macabre mystery as Oliver, Charles, and Mabel desperately search for the killer who ended their friend Sazz Pataki's life. Caught between their investigation and producing a film adaptation of their podcast, the try-hard trio finally finds out the truth in the penultimate episode of the season: Sazz's killer was none other than Only Murders in the Building screenwriter Marshall Pope (a.k.a. former stuntman Rex Bailey).

Marshall's reveal as this season's killer might come as a shock to many viewers, but it doesn't come out of nowhere. As with its previous killers, Only Murders in the Building dropped just enough hints throughout the season to point toward its ultimate murderer without giving away his identity too soon. Looking back on the previous episodes of the season, there were plenty of hints along the way to alert viewers to Marshall's malevolent machinations.

In this week’s episode, “Valley of the Dolls,” Mable (Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short) get out of New York City and go to Charles’ sister’s home in Staten Island.

Seen next to Selena was a doll with blonde hair and bangs who vaguely seemed to resemble Taylor. And if you’re wondering how Travis plays into this, the doll was also wearing an outfit with the number 87 on it. This is,...

‘Only Murders in the Building’ Never Told Billy Joel That They Were Licensing This Song Just for A Gag
Image
Unlike seemingly every other celebrity of his generation, singer-songwriting legend Billy Joel never begged to be featured on the mystery-comedy Only Murders in the Building, but if he did, maybe the show wouldn’t have turned his masterwork and his hometown into a punchline.

The ongoing fourth season of Hulu’s breakout hit about an unlikely group of homicide investigators, podcasters and neighbors has already treated its audience to a slate of A-list guest stars that any crowd-pleasing comedy series would envy. Thus far, Meryl Streep has made her reappearance as Martin Short’s struggling actress lady friend, Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis and Eva Longoria have played themselves as another true crime investigator trio, and, in the most recent episode, “Valley of the Dolls,” Melissa McCarthy appeared as Steve Martin’s estranged younger sister whose creepy Long Island home serves as the hideout for the protagonists amidst mounting danger.

‘Only Murders In The Building’ Boss John Hoffman Details Meryl Streep & Melissa McCarthy On-Screen Fight; Season 1 Plot Holes—Deadline Q&a
Image
Spoiler Alert: The following reveals major plot points from episode 7 of Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building titled “Valle of the Dolls.”

If anyone had told Only Murders in the Building co-creator John Hoffman he’d have Meryl Streep and Melissa McCarthy in a full-on girl fight on the series, he’d have never believed you.

The thought itself sounds totally bonkers but it actually happens in this week’s new episode titled “Valley of the Dolls,” currently available to stream via Hulu. Streep’s Loretta Durkin and McCarthy’s character Doreen, Charles’ (Steve Martin) sister, duke it out in the suburbs as the latter is distressed her advances on Oliver (Martin Short) aren’t working because the former showed up unannounced.

As Hoffman tells Deadline, the epic tumble was originally meant to play out with stunt people but the seasoned actresses wanted to do it themselves, pigtails flying and all.

But who was responsible for pulling the trigger that ultimately killed his stunt double Sazz (Jane Lynch)? Only time will tell, but as Charles, Mabel (Selena Gomez), and Oliver (Martin Short) sought protection outside of Manhattan at Charles’ sister Doreen’s (Melissa McCarthy) Long Island abode, friend Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton) was tasked with seeking out those responsible for cashing Professor Dudenoff’s (Griffin Dunne) checks following his death. Check out the trailer for the great Music By John Williams Disney+ documentary
Image
Disney has released the trailer for the upcoming Music by John Williams documentary that offers a long-overdue focus on the legendary composer! Check it out!

In the world of movie soundtrack composers, there are two categories: John Williams and everyone else. His early works showed his skills, such as The Towering Inferno, Valley of the Dolls, The Cowboys, and Fiddler on the Roof, which won him his first Oscar. It was in 1974 that Williams first worked with director Steven Spielberg on The Sugarland Express, beginning an amazing partnership.

A year later, they combined forces on Jaws, the mega-blockbuster hit that earned Williams a second Oscar and launched him to fame. Since then, Williams has crafted some of the most iconic movie music of all time: Star Wars, the Indiana Jones trilogy, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T., Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, Superman, Home Alone and the first three Harry Potter films.

Sharon Case Still Loves Doing ‘Y&r’ After 30 Years — Even If She’s ‘Always Crying’
Image
When Sharon Case heard that The Young and the Restless was interested in her for the role of Sharon Collins in 1994, she didn’t jump at the chance to audition. “I had just finished shooting a season of Valley of the Dolls, a primetime show based on the book and the movie and that was an exhausting shoot,” she recalls. “So once I had finished, I was on a much-needed vacation and that was when Young and the Restless called. But I was at this excruciating point where I had to carry on with my vacation; I needed the rest.” Nevertheless, she agreed to cut her trip a little short, auditioned for Y&r, and landed the role. But having already appeared on General Hospital as Dawn Winthrop and As The World Turns as Debbie Simon, she didn’t think she’d be sticking around. “At the time, I was thinking...

Kamala Harris Inspires Top Designers at NY Fashion Week: “Joy Has Become My Best Friend”
Image
Six weeks since her sudden anointment at the top of the Democratic ticket, Vice President Kamala Harris has not only galvanized her party in advance of the Nov. 5 presidential election, but also one of the much-buzzed-about sentiments at the heart of her campaign — joy — is also being embraced by the designers who unveiled their Spring 2025 collections in New York this week. If not for President Joe Biden dropping out of the race against former President Donald Trump — after the Democratic incumbent was trailing the GOP nominee in polls — New York Fashion Week would have exuded a decidedly different vibe. “I was feeling very dejected; I remember thinking, is this the America I came for?” Prabal Gurung recalled about the first half of 2024, as he spoke with The Hollywood Reporter prior to Saturday’s debut of his collection.

Months earlier Gurung had visited his native Nepal to see family and friends and celebrate Holi,...

‘The Deliverance’: How Netflix Viewers Responded To Glenn Close’s Portrayal Of A Bimbo Named Alberta
Image
Lee Daniels tried to warn everybody before The Deliverance dropped on Netflix: “Y’all are not ready for Glenn in this.”

The director is talking about Glenn Close, who plays the chain-smoking, cancer-riddled mother of Andra Day in the film that’s inspired by real events. Daniels’ first foray into the horror genre shot to No. 1 on Netflix after dropping Aug. 30, which may have a little bit — or a whole lot — to do with Close, who clearly had the time of her life playing a tramp named Alberta.

In The Deliverance, Alberta is the mom of Ebony (Day), an alcoholic single mom whose hands are full with three kids, no money and a haunted home that’s fooling a social worker (Mo’Nique) into thinking that she’s beating her kids. The story is inspired by the 2011 case of Latoya Ammons, who moved with her family into a scary Indiana rental...

How ‘The Playboy Club’ and ‘Pan Am’ Cost Us Lee Daniels’ Take on ‘Valley of the Dolls’
Image
One of the few moments of calm in Lee Daniels‘ new Netflix thriller “The Deliverance” comes when the tormented Jackson family sits down together to watch a favorite movie. The movie Daniels chose to bring three generations together in a communal viewing experience? The 1967 adaptation of Jacqueline Susann’s camp classic “Valley of the Dolls.”

For Daniels, it was a tip of the hat to a movie he loves even though he doesn’t exactly think it’s good. “It’s one of my favorite films, and I still don’t know why,” he told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “It really is camp, but in a bad way camp. Not in a good way. But I love it, I live for it.”

The “Valley of the Dolls” reference in “The Deliverance” isn’t just a tribute to a favorite movie; it’s also a callback to one of Daniels’ unrealized projects.

‘The Deliverance’ Review: Lee Daniels’s Haunted House Story Is Elevated by Human Drama
Image
Inspired by the alleged 2011 haunting of a rental home in Gary, Indiana, occupied by Latoya Ammons and her three children, Lee Daniels’s The Deliverance generally abides by the tried-and-true Amityville Horror playbook when it comes to its scare tactics. But Daniels isn’t one to turn in an anonymous genre effort, so his stab at a haunted house story leaves plenty of room to explore the toxic cycles of abuse endured by the family at its center, freely indulging his penchant for robust miserabilist melodrama and showy performances.

Ebony (Andra Day) is a single mother from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, who’s struggling to provide for her three children, the teenaged Nate (Caleb McLaughlin) and Shante (Demi Singleton) and younger Dre (Anthony B. Jenkins), on a low-wage salary while their estranged father is away on indefinite duty in Iraq. Ebony has also taken in her patronizing mother, Alberta (Glenn Close), while...

The Downfall of Richard Dreyfuss, Explained
Image
Quick Links Who Is Richard Dreyfuss? 2017 Sexual Harassment Allegations May 2023 Academy Award Controversy May 2024 Cabot Theater Controversy

Oscar-winning actor Richard Dreyfuss has experienced a major fall from grace over the past seven years. The once-beloved actor who came to prominence in the 1970s with such classic George Lucas and Steven Spielberg movies as American Graffiti, Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and others has recently made headlines by lashing out and insulting several marginalized groups at a public Jaws retrospective screening in Beverly, Massachusetts. The latest controversy comes seven years after Dreyfuss was accused of sexual harassment by a female TV writer.

In the past year, Dreyfuss has also spoken out against the Academy Awards' new diversity rules that promote inclusion, showing how far the world has left him behind and how out of touch with reality he seems to be. Unfortunately, the once-venerated Hollywood actor has doubled down on his seething outrage,...

The Revelatory Films of Lee Grant, the World’s Oldest Living Director, Get Restored In Exclusive Trailers
Image
Few creative talents have the breadth of a career equal to Lee Grant. The 98-year-old director, actor, and writer has a storied body of work, debuting on screen in 1951 in William Wyler’s Detective Story, for which she received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination and Cannes Best Actress win, while also receiving a Supporting Actress Oscar for Shampoo. Grant, who has also appeared in Mulholland Drive, Valley of the Dolls, and In the Heat of the Night, has also set a few records: she’s the oldest living film director, while 1980’s Tell Me a Riddle was the first major American film to be entirely written, produced and directed by women, and she’s the only Academy Award-winning actor to also direct an Academy Award-winning documentary with 1986’s Down and Out in America.

Among the most revelatory repertory cinema I saw last year, the much-deserved 4K restorations of Grant...

Kristen Wiig in Palm Royale (2024)
Palm Royale's Campy Comedy Proves That Not All Female-Driven Shows Need to Be Dour
Kristen Wiig in Palm Royale (2024)
Splashy and flashy (but not really trashy), Palm Royale on Apple TV+ fits easily into the ranks of high-gloss, high-concept, female-driven dramas that have enjoyed a Golden Age on premium streaming channels this past decade.

Recent series like Bad Sisters (also on Apple TV+) and Max's Big Little Lies drew a substantial audience with a combination of star-studded ensemble casts, heavy themes, and plots from best-selling domestic thrillers like those written by author Liane Moriarty.

Palm Royale ticks many of those boxes (it's based on the 2018 novel Mr. and Mrs. American Pie by Juliet McDaniel), but instead of sexual violence and trauma, it brings big laughs and a soapy jewel-box mystery to the female-centric limited series tablescape.

Palm Royale's opening credit sequence immediately places the series in time and taste by evoking Valley of The Dolls and James Bond with its graphic animation.

The series follows the current social...

Making James Bond a Woman Was Pitched Before 1962’s ‘Dr. No’ Got Made; Ian Fleming Met Sean Connery and Said: ‘I Want an Elegant Man, Not This Roughneck’
Image
Lashana Lynch became the first woman to own the 007 title in the 2021 James Bond tentpole “No Time to Die,” but it turns out a plan to make James Bond a woman was actually pitched over 60 years prior. In Nicholas Shakespeare’s upcoming biography of Bond author Ian Fleming, titled “Ian Fleming: The Complete Man,” it’s confirmed that producer Gregory Ratoff floated the idea of casting Susan Hayward in a film adaptation of Fleming’s first Bond novel “Casino Royale.”

Shakespeare writes in the biography (via IndieWire): “Since the mid-1950s, many well-known actors had been approached [to play Bond]. Gregory Ratoff had the arresting idea of having Bond played by a woman, Susan Hayward. Ian had entertained several possibilities, from Richard Burton (‘I think that Richard Burton would be by far the best James Bond’), to James Stewart (‘I wouldn’t at all mind him as Bond if he can slightly...
