Oscar-nominated actor Sean Astin, best known for his roles in iconic movies like TheLord of the Ringstrilogy, The Goonies, and Rudy, is seeking a new title. Deadline reports that Astin has submitted a bid for and will run for president of SAG-AFTRA, the 160,000-member union that represents actors. The union is currently headed up by Fran Drescher, who has been president of SAG-AFTRA since 2021.

Running on Astin’s ticket is Michelle Hurd, known as Raffi Musiker from Star Trek: Picard, as well as roles in Blindspot and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Hurd also recently appeared in the Netflix hit, You, as psychologist Dr. Val. Hurd is running for secretary-treasurer of SAG.

The Lord of the Rings actor Sean Astin is seeking to replace SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher in the upcoming union election.

Astin has submitted a bid to lead the 160,000-member organization, Deadline confirmed Friday. Also on his ticket are Michelle Hurd for secretary-treasurer, Joely Fisher for president of the Los Angeles Local Board, Lisa Ann Walter for first vice president of the Local Board, and David Jolliffe to return for second vice president.

If elected, Astin would follow in the footsteps of his mother Patty Duke, the Valley of the Dolls and The Miracle Worker actress who became the second woman to ever run the then-Screen Actors Guild in 1985. She held the position for three years.

The murder mystery is coming off its best winter awards run following double surprise victories at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for Martin Short's performance and comedy ensemble. They are the show's first major industry prizes — perhaps a preview of its first major Emmy win? Only Murders in the Building has won seven Emmys from 49 nominations for its first three seasons, but all have been at the Creative Arts Emmys.

The 29th annual Excellence in Production Design Awards were handed out by the Art Director’s Guild (Adg, IATSE Local 800) at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown during an event hosted by comedian Rachael Harris.

The Adg wins will have the attention of those looking for signs of who will take the Academy Award for production design. The winner of the Adg’s fantasy film honor have taken home the production design Oscar three times in the past six years, with Poor Things, Dune and Black Panther all going on to win the Oscar. A Complete Unknown and The Brutalist, the latter coming off a Best Picture – Drama win at the Golden Globes on Sunday, are nominated in the Period Feature Film Category, joined by Gladiator II, Nosferatu and Saturday Night. In the Fantasy category, Dune 2 and Wicked are up against Alien: Romulus, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga.

Three films by Russ Meyer, the sexploitation director film critic Roger Ebert described as “the ultimate auteur,” are coming to physical media in December.

The estate of the pioneering independent filmmaker has reached an agreement with media company Severin Films to distribute three of his signature films, “Vixen,” “Supervixens” and “Beneath the Valley of the Ultravixens,” on home video for the first time in decades. Working in collaboration with Janice Cowart and The Russ Meyer Trust, Severin’s discs — available in 4K Uhd, Blu-ray and DVD — mark the first remastering of Meyer’s films from the original camera negatives since the early 1980s, and each will be accompanied by both new and archival special features curated exclusively for these releases.

One of the few moments of calm in Lee Daniels‘ new Netflix thriller “The Deliverance” comes when the tormented Jackson family sits down together to watch a favorite movie. The movie Daniels chose to bring three generations together in a communal viewing experience? The 1967 adaptation of Jacqueline Susann’s camp classic “Valley of the Dolls.”

For Daniels, it was a tip of the hat to a movie he loves even though he doesn’t exactly think it’s good. “It’s one of my favorite films, and I still don’t know why,” he told IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast. “It really is camp, but in a bad way camp. Not in a good way. But I love it, I live for it.”

The “Valley of the Dolls” reference in “The Deliverance” isn’t just a tribute to a favorite movie; it’s also a callback to one of Daniels’ unrealized projects.

“Only Murders in the Building” is back for Season 4, once again bringing a murder with it. Charles, Mabel and Oliver really don’t have great luck in avoiding that.

But the show will also bring some very famous faces into the mix as story for the fourth season finds the trio getting a proper Hollywood movie made about them. In addition to the actors playing them, fans will also see some beloved returning cast members. But more on that momentarily.
