Staked with a broken wagon wheel in1872 by Lawrence Van Helsing (Peter Cushing), Count Dracula (Christopher Lee) is raised from his ashes in 1972 by Johnny Alucard (Christopher Neame) and goes after Van Helsing's descendents anthropolgy professor Lorrimer van Helsing (Peter Cushing) and his grand-daughter Jessica (Stephanie Beacham).

Dracula A.D. 1972 is the sixth movie in Hammer Horror's Dracula series, preceded by O Vampiro da Noite (1958) (1958), As Noivas do Vampiro (1960) (1960), Drácula, o Príncipe das Trevas (1966) (1966), O Sangue de Drácula (1970) (1970), and O Conde Drácula (1970) (1970) and followed by Os Ritos Satânicos de Drácula (1973) (1973). All of Hammer's Dracula movies are based on the character created by Irish novelist Bram Stoker in his 1897 novel Dracula. The screenplay for Drcula A.D. 1972 was written by British screenwriter Don Houghton.

Van Helsing traces Johnny to his flat where Johnny is eventually killed by falling into a shower under a skylight. Van Helsing then goes to St. Bartolph's churchyard where he finds Bob (Pip Miller) dead and Jessica lying on an altar in a trance. He places a crucifix on her neck, digs a pit, fills it with stakes, and covers it all with grasses. After sunset, Dracula comes to awaken Jessica. Van Helsing stabs Dracula with a silver blade but Jessica pulls it out. Dracula follows van Helsing outside where he throws holy water on Dracula who slips and falls into the pit of stakes, is impaled, and turns to dust. In the final scene, van Helsing puts his coat around Jessica's shoulders and leads her out of the churchyard, stopping just long enough to read the inscription on Lawrence van Helsing's grave: Requiescat in pace ultima (Rest in final peace).
