Mike Curb, who wrote the music, was later Lieutenant Governor of California as a Republican during Democrat Jerry Brown's first iteration as governor. Whenever Brown was out of state campaigning for president, Curb automatically became acting governor and would take various actions that Brown would not approve of. On the other hand, Curb was earlier involved in creating the pop group Stone Poneys with Linda Ronstadt. Ronstadt later became Gov. Brown's girlfriend. The film won the Palme d'Or for Best Short Film at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival and popularized southern California as the place to be internationally in that era.
