Tarzan, o Magnífico

This Disney Leading Lady Was Almost Crowned a Disney Princess
Image
Tarzan (1999) was one of the last movies that could be considered part of Disney's powerhouse Renaissance Era of animated films. It featured award-winning songs by Phil Collins with a score by Mark Mancina. The movie was a retelling of the story Tarzan of the Apes by Edgar Rice Burroughs, published in 1912. Frozen director Chris Buck made his directorial debut, and the movie presented a new take on Tarzan as a jungle-surfing vine swinger with a father-son conflict at its center. Rosie O'Donnell starred in the voice cast along with Tony Goldwyn, Glenn Close, Brian Blessed, Wayne Knight, and Minnie Driver.

Driver starred as Disney's latest heroine and almost-princess, Jane Porter. Although not of royal blood in the Tarzan story, Disney did once consider adding Jane to its merchandising line of princesses. Not every "princess" is actual royalty -- for example, Mulan is a warrior more than she is a princess.

Betta St. John, Actress in ‘South Pacific’ and ‘Dream Wife,’ Dies at 93
Image
Betta St. John, who portrayed the lovely island girl Liat in the original Broadway production of South Pacific and starred as a princess alongside Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr in the MGM romantic comedy Dream Wife, has died. She was 93.

St. John died June 23 of natural causes at an assisted living facility in Brighton, England, her son, TV producer Roger Grant, told The Hollywood Reporter.

The California native played one of the survivors of an airline crash, who is chased by a crocodile in Tarzan and the Lost Safari (1957) — the first Tarzan film in 15 years and the first one in color — and then returned for Tarzan the Magnificent (1960). Both films starred Gordon Scott as the King of the Jungle.

St. John also starred with Stewart Granger, Ann Blyth and Robert Taylor in All the Brothers Were Valiant (1953); with Victor Mature, Piper Laurie and Vincent Price in the 3-D adventure Dangerous...

Jock Mahoney, who two years earlier portrayed Tarzan’s foe in Tarzan the Magnificent, makes his splashy debut as Tarzan in this tale about the Ape-Man’s rescue of elephants who will be doomed when a newly built dam unleashes its waters. John Guillermin directs, combining colorful subcontinent locales with battles large and thunderous (massive bull elephants), small and fierce (cobra versus mongoose), cunning and treacherous (Tarzan against human foes). No matter where the jungle, there is but one jungle lord!

John Guillermin (Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure) directs this tale of action and intrigue in the subcontinent.

Director Robert Day Has Passed Away
He took viewers into the steamy jungles of Tarzan, the sleek (and foreboding) future of Logan's Run, and a skyscraper under siege by a deadly blaze. Filmmaker Robert Day brought many worlds to life in his career, and it's with great sadness that we inform readers that the director has passed away at the age of 94.

According to THR (via Legacy.com), Day passed away on March 17th on Bainbridge Island in Seattle. A British filmmaker, Day made his mark in the world of directing with four Tarzan movies—Tarzan the Magnificent (1960), Tarzan's Three Challenges (1963), Tarzan and the Valley of Gold (1966), and Tarzan and the Great River (1967)—and he also helmed one episode of the Tarzan TV series in 1966.

Day also directed horror legend Boris Karloff in Corridors of Blood and The Haunted Strangler, and he helmed plenty of other horror and sci-fi projects, including First Man Into Space and Ritual of Evil,...

The Many Lives Of "Zulu"
Some of the international movie posters presented in Cinema Retro issue #28, which features in-depth coverage of the making of Zulu.

By Brian Hannan

The 50th anniversary showing of Zulu in Britain next month is unlikely to be repeated in the U.S. where the film flopped. But even the poorest box-office performer has an afterlife. So in 1965 Zulu was pushed out again anywhere that would have it. That meant it supported some odd, not to say ugly, bedfellows – exploitationer Taboos of the World in Kansas City, The Three Stooges in The Outlaws Is Coming in Phoenix, B western Stage To Thunder Rock in Long Beach, How to Stuff a Wild Bikini in Des Moines and Rhino in Abilene. They liked it in Long Beach where it supported both Circus World and That Man from Rio. It was the second feature to None But the Brave in Provo, Utah, and to two more successful Joe E.

Margaret Field Dies: Sally Field Mother, The Man From Planet X Star
Margaret Field, best remembered for the 1951 sci-fier The Man From Planet X, died at her Malibu home on Sunday, Nov. 6, the day her daughter Sally Field turned 65. Margaret Field, who had been diagnosed with cancer six years ago, was 89. Directed by cult B-movie director Edgar G. Ulmer, The Man From Planet X turned out to be the highlight of Field's film career. The story revolves around a mysterious journalist (Robert Clarke) who may or may not be an alien with ties to a spaceship that has landed near an observatory on a remote Scottish island. Most of Field's previous movie appearances had been uncredited bit parts, chiefly in Paramount productions such as The Perils of Pauline, Night Has a Thousand Eyes, and Samson and Delilah. Her parts got bigger following The Man from Planet X, but they remained subpar roles in mostly B movies. Among those were Philip Ford's...

Literary adventure heroes the movies mangled
Conan. James Bond. Tarzan. Terence looks at these, and other literary characters who were changed by movie-makers on their way to the big screen...

Adapting literary heroes to the screen is a tough dilemma for filmmakers. With the possible exception of the Harry Potter phenomenon, the vast majority of a potential movie audience often has little or no familiarity with any given character's literary exploits. The end result can often be frustrating for fans of the original stories, especially when movies make too many arbitrary changes, or even do away with the spirit and intentions of the books entirely.

Conan The Barbarian, the latest rendering of Robert E Howard's pulp fantasy hero, swung its way into cinemas last week. While critics and fans are divided over its merits, most agree that it's at least more faithful and better made than such Howard adaptations as Conan The Destroyer or Kull The Conqueror.
