- Rocky Barnes: Miss Mallory... Do you mind if I call you Kate?
- Katharine Mallory: You might as well. I've a feeling you'll get around to it in a minute anyway.
- Officer Rocky Barnes: [looking at Petey and Thurlow in the back seat] You say he's your brother?
- Peter J. 'Petey' Conklin: Yeah.
- Officer Rocky Barnes: He doesn't look like you.
- Peter J. 'Petey' Conklin: I ain't complainin'.
- [It is night. Two policemen can be seen driving through a city in their car. Driving is Officer Dan Purvis, his partner is Rocky Barnes.]
- Rocky Barnes: Heavy evening so far, two disturbing the peace calls and one drunk arrest. I don't know whether I can stand it.
- Officer Dan Purvis: Night's still fresh, don't give up yet.
- Rocky Barnes: Knock off and get a cup of coffee. Huh, Dan?
- Officer Dan Purvis: How about covering the territory for a while? Just out of curiosity?
- Rocky Barnes: Once Dan I'd like to see you relax a little on duty.
- Officer Dan Purvis: I have to set a good example for you, Junior. Don't forget I'm trying to make a policeman out of you someday.
- Rocky Barnes: Give me a flash when you figure I made it, will you?
- [Rocky Barnes and Dan Purvis can be seen in their car, driving through the city at night]
- Rocky Barnes: You know I felt sorry for that kid, the one who was doing all the blubbering? She was really scared.
- Officer Dan Purvis: They're all scared the first time they're caught. Another year she'll be packing a shiv, ready to stick it in somebody's gut if she has to. Maybe your gut.
- [Ritchie Garris has been cornered by Dan Purvis. As Garris prepares to shoot Purvis, the former's girlfriend, Terry Romaine, runs in front of Garris.]
- Terry Romaine: No, Ritchie! You're not going to kill anyb...
- [Ritchie fires, with a few shots hitting Terry, who falls to the floor]
- Ritchie Garris: Terry! You crazy fool!
- Ritchie Garris: Let me tell ya once more, for the last time. Stay away from me, ya tin-badge flat-foots!
- Ritchie Garris: So help me, you clowns keep stickin' ya beaks into my business, you're gonna be a coupla sad monkeys one of these days.
- Officer Dan Purvis: You listen to me, Garris. You stick this in the back of your filthy brain and keep it there. We're gonna keep mindin' your business until you and your gorillas are tucked away in cages where you belong. Come on, let's get outta this zoo, and eat with some human beings.
- [first lines]
- [as the film begins, an overhead shot of a city is shown. A voice can then be heard speaking]
- Narrator: A big city is full of people, and some people are full of crime. We know a lot about the big crime experts, the mastermind detectives, the nation wide, hard-hitting FBI. But, before they reach the scene of a crime, there are generally some other guys who get there first. The men in the prowl cars, the radio patrol.
- [the camera then shows a group of people working at some radios]
- Narrator: Their best weapons are a radio set and four wheels. Their battleground is every city street. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose. For their kind of enemy never rests or surrenders.
- [more people can be shown working with radios]
- Narrator: Our story begins where most radio call activity usually begins, in the nerve center of Headquarters, the Communications Division.
- [Rocky Barnes and Dan Purvis can be seen driving through the city at night]
- Rocky Barnes: Still don't get this Jekyll and Hyde twist. Purvis, the big-hearted nice guy civilian. Purvis, the tough cop, mow 'em down, don't give 'em a second chance.
- Officer Dan Purvis: Wait till you'd have your fill of the scum. Slugging, knifing... shooting holes in decent people.
- [Purvis looks at Barnes]
- Officer Dan Purvis: You'll toughen up, Junior.
- Rocky Barnes: Maybe. They can't all be wrong, all the way through. You gotta look inside. Maybe some of them rate a second chance.
- Officer Dan Purvis: I can read 'em from the outside. And I haven't been wrong yet.
- [Rocky Barnes and Dan Purvis can be seen in their car, driving through the city at night. They have just received a call on their radio]
- Officer Rocky Barnes: There she is, right on schedule at 10:31.
- Officer Dan Purvis: [smiles] Here we go again.
- [Rocky Barnes and Dan Purvis have just received a call on their car's radio]
- Rocky Barnes: Ah, get those velvet tones, restful and lovin'.
- Officer Dan Purvis: That's what you said the first time you heard Tokyo Rose.
- Rocky Barnes: So I can't be wrong twice. Can I? I tell you, we've gotta find out who this girl is.
- Officer Dan Purvis: We don't have to find out anything. You start hanging around Communications, you'll find yourself walkin' a beat somewhere. She's got a nice voice, and that's probably as far as it goes.
- [Rocky Barnes can be seen riding in his patrol car with Officer Dan Purvis. The two of them are taking a call on their radio. At some point, Barnes looks at Purvis]
- Rocky Barnes: You know the trouble with you, Pappy? You've got no imagination. Till I see this girl myself, I won't believe that this voice doesn't go with a real charmer.
- [Purvis looks at Barnes and smiles]
- [Rocky Barnes and Dan Purvis can be seen getting into their car following an incident on a street corner. Purvis gets in the driver's seat and starts up the car]
- Rocky Barnes: I don't know what the idea is of sending Romano down to the station. He won't make a complaint, we're licked.
- Officer Dan Purvis: He may get guts enough to identify the guy when he sees him in custody in Headquarters.
- Rocky Barnes: [lights a cigarette] And who are we gonna take into custody?
- Officer Dan Purvis: Playin' a hunch. We're going to take a little ride over to Garris' Starlight Club. Might be able to hang a rap on one of his boys.
- Rocky Barnes: Good deal, Pappy.
- [Rocky Barnes and Dan Purvis can be seen arriving at Garris' Starlight Club. Upon arriving, they exit their car and begin to look at a nearby Lincoln]
- Rocky Barnes: Garris' Lincoln hasn't been out.
- Officer Dan Purvis: [puts his hand on another car and feels it] The convertible's still hot. I figured Quist would be our boy.
- [as Dan looks at the rear of the convertible, Rocky opens the front passenger door and begins to look under the seat. While looking, he spots something]
- Rocky Barnes: Give my a hand with the front seat, Danny.
- [Dan helps Rocky move the front seat just enough for the latter to pull out what appears to be a bomb]
- Rocky Barnes: Uh-huh. That's a coincidence. Couple of stink bombs.
- [Dan closes the rear driver's side door of the car as Rocky closes the car's front passenger door. Afterwards, he and Dan enter the club]
- [Dan Purvis has just succeeded in eliminating Ritchie Garris, who has been shot several times before falling down a flight of stairs. After shooting Garris, Purvis can be seen standing in the hallway of the apartment building where the action took place. At some point, a few policemen enter the view]
- Officer Dan Purvis: [Points towards the direction of Garris] Take care of him, will ya?
- [a few more policemen can be seen entering through a window in the hallway. Dan turns to look at them before pointing towards an open door]
- Officer Dan Purvis: Go check on the baby.
- [the other policemen enter the open room. Dan remains in the hall for a few seconds before he also goes inside]
