At the beginning of World War II, a Swedish ship is in a northern French port and is exposed to a German air raid. The captain, who has had difficulty obtaining permission to drop anchor, takes the opportunity to set off during the confusion. In the general chaos, the Swede Ingrid has also sneaked aboard, hoping to get home to Sweden. During the journey, the skipper also has to take on board two shipwrecked people from a mine-damaged Swedish steamer and the conflicts pile up.
