- Ellen Gayley: Don't tell me you've been playing hooky all this time.
- Flip Gayley: Oh, no, mommy. Only the last four days.
- Ellen Gayley: Oh, Phil.
- Phil Gayley: Well, she's smarter than those other kids. I thought it only fair to let the rest of the class catch up with her.
- Phil Gayley: Ellen, I'm a little bit disappointed in you. Carousing around every dive in town. Wallowing in cocktails. Slipping home at 7 or 8 in the morning.
- Ellen Gayley: At least I waited until we were divorced.
- Phil Gayley: But, but, but, but... the old goat butted you right into Reno.
- Ellen Gayley: I can't understand it.
- Phil Gayley: What?
- Ellen Gayley: You sing like that and I married you.
- Phil Gayley: Luigi!
- Luigi: What?
- Phil Gayley: Nancy's here.
- Luigi: With who?
- Phil Gayley: With me. How do I get into these jams?
- Luigi: It's a gift.
- Phil Gayley: I don't care about Nancy. But I don't want her to start making a scene. You know how she is.
- Luigi: Sure. You take a girl out to dinner two or three hundred times and right away she thinks you're interested in her.
- McCarthy: [Enters Phil's studio and sees him painting trees] Why do ya waste your time on this stuff for?
- Phil Gayley: Oh, just getting back to nature.
- McCarthy: There's more nature in one of them gorgeous girls you paint than in all them tired trees.
- Phil Gayley: Yeah, but I can't get in trouble with the trees.
- McCarthy: Oh, you've got a point there. Merry Christmas, Mr. Gayley.
- Flip Gayley: [as she and Phil walk away from his painting in the park] You gonna leave your painting here?
- Phil Gayley: Oh, sure. Nobody'll take it. I wouldn't want a thing like that in my home.
- Flip Gayley: I'm not going home. I'm gonna live in Luigi's back room and scrub floors and eat bread and water and Luigi will beat me.
- Luigi: Me? Beat you? Hmmm.
- Police Lieutenant: You told us your name is Willie Schmidt. Then why does the kid call you Luigi?
- Luigi: Well, well you see, when I bought my restaurant, the name on the sign in the front was "Luigi's." And it was cheaper to change my name than to buy a new sign.
- Phil Gayley: If only your mother had a jealous husband or something.
- Flip Gayley: She has.
- Phil Gayley: Who?
- Flip Gayley: You.
- Phil Gayley: Oh, yeah. I keep thinking I'm uncle Phil.
- Phil Gayley: I've never seen you look better, Ellen.
- Ellen Gayley: Oh, I don't know why. I haven't had decent night's sleep in months.
- Phil Gayley: Ah, insomnia?
- Ellen Gayley: No, parties.
- Phil Gayley: Ohhh.
- Ellen Gayley: Between cocktails here, and dinner there, and dancing someplace else, I just can't seem to get to bed before four in the morning.
- Phil Gayley: Oh, is that so? Maybe you're not trying.
- Phil Gayley: Now wait a minute. I'm asking all the right questions, but you're not giving the right answers.
- Sales woman in store: Incidentally, I've always thought that I should've been a professional model, Mr. Gayley. What do you think?
- Phil Gayley: The minute I looked at you, I said to myself, "Hmm."
- Sales woman in store: [Excitedly] Mr. Gayley!
- Messenger Boy: Oh, I have a package for Miss Philipa Gayley.
- Flip Gayley: That's for me.
- Messenger Boy: Well, will you make an X right there, little girl?
- Flip Gayley: Wouldn't it be better if I signed my name?
- Luigi: This would never happen in the Old Country.
- Phil Gayley: What Old Country?
