- Lady Frome: I should have married him years ago. It's not been such fun being a widow.
- McNab: I was not aware he asked you, m'lady.
- General Church: I wish to be of service to you, madam.
- Mrs. Farnsworth: General Church, but how kind! Do you know I think it's simply marvelous the way you elderly people are rallying around trying to do your bit? Col. Fortescue, I mean he simply gave me no peace 'til I found something for him to do. So now he's helping to fit civilian gas masks, two 'til four every afternoon. Of course, the dear old things, they're no earthly good at their job. Everything he does has to be done all over again, but he's so thrilled to think he's helping.
- General Church: Madam, Col. Fortescue is all of 83.
- Mrs. Farnsworth: Yes, that's what makes it all so wonderful. You dear, gallant old souls just bent on doing your bit. It ought to be an inspiration to the rest of us.
- General Church: So you think I'm a dear, gallant old soul.
- Mrs. Farnsworth: Oh, I do! People like you and Col. Fortescue I think are marvelous. So gallant!
- General Church: Good day, madam.
