  • Bridget Drake: Well, for goodness sake, what's the matter with you people? Don't you know what beds are for? Or do you? Or is that the wrong thing to say?
  • Bridget Drake: Quiet, Walter. we're being literary.
  • Clare Woodruf: I've discovered it doesn't pay to be capable. Husbands don't approve.
  • Clare Woodruf: I'm afraid we're being a terrible nuisance.
  • Bridget Drake: Oh, not at all. Nuisances are my specialty.
  • Bridget Drake: Oh, Jimmy, willI stick to that chair?
  • Jimmy Lee: Well, it depends on how sticky you are.
  • Bridget Drake: I bet you can't guess what we've been doing?
  • Jimmy Lee: I thought that's what we weren't supposed to guess.
  • Bridget Drake: Oohh, Jimmy! We ve went down to Greenwich Village to look at some pictures. And I said to Walter, as long as we've gone this far, we might as well go the whole way.
  • Jimmy Lee: You said that to Walter!
  • Jimmy Lee: Women are like eggs, darling. When they're good, they're good. When they're not - phooey!
  • Rogers Woodruf: It's been nice meeting you, Mr. Grant.
  • [shakes hands with Lee]
  • Jimmy Lee: The name is Lee.
  • Rogers Woodruf: Oh, I'm so sorry - natural association: Grant and Lee. One always thinks of them together.
  • Jimmy Lee: Heh, heh, that's right. Only Lee surrendered.
  • Bridget Drake: I saw you going around with a pencil in your hand, but I didn't know anything was going on - anything creative, I mean. The creative business is so funny. You never do know when it's going on.
  • Mary Howard: Oh, darling, why did it have to come to this? We were such friends.
  • Jimmy Lee: We were never friends, and you know it. Why, I was so nuts about you, I'd of proposed to you the first time I ever met you if I had anything to offer.
  • Jimmy Lee: You know me - I'd follow her nibs into a blast furnace.
  • Jimmy Lee: She's a lady. A perfect lady.
  • Bridget Drake: Oh... well bring her in anyway.
  • Bridget Drake: When's your book coming out, Mary?
  • Mary Howard: In a couple of months.
  • Walter Del Canto: What's it about?
  • Jimmy Lee: [interrupting as Mary is about to answer, with the description being like how Mary would like her life to be] Uh, it's about a girl - noble, fine, high principled - is'n love with a married man. Great love, the real thing! He goes for her like a steam roller. But does she try to back away from him? Not in the least. She goes for him... hook, line and sinker.
  • Walter Del Canto: And how does it end?
  • Jimmy Lee: She sinks!
  • Mary Howard: [glaring angrily at Jimmy] I'm working on the ending now.
  • Bridget Drake: [excitedly, then stopping mid-sentence when she realizes what she is about to say] I'm crazy to read it, Mary! I usually don't like your...
  • Mary Howard: [comforting Bridget by cradling the nape of her neck] Ah, darling.
  • Bridget Drake: [embarrassed] Oh my. Isn't it hot.
  • Bridget Drake: I do hope you won't be bored, Jimmy.
  • Jimmy Lee: [sarcastically] Bored? Why, literary receptions are my very life's blood.
  • Bridget Drake: [together by themselves on the balcony] Walter, be amusing... like Jimmy.
  • Mary Howard: [together by themselves in the parlor] Jimmy, now try to be nice, like Walter.
  • Jimmy Lee: [to Clare about Mary] You see, I'm the dust under her feet, not the cream in her coffee.
  • Jimmy Lee: Oh, Mary, we've been so darn happy bouncing around together. Think what fun it would be for keeps.
  • Bridget Drake: Walt, why don't you say bright things like that? O, I mean, you're clever too, only not so amusing. Oh, what I mean is, us...
  • Jimmy Lee: You insult me - I was raised in a tent.
  • Mary Howard: Mr. Woodruf and I were working on my book.
  • Jimmy Lee: Oh, well you're likely to wreck your eyesight working in this subdued light, Mr. Woodruf.
  • [he staggers over to the switch and turns the lights on]
  • Jimmy Lee: Say, what I wanna know is why I'm out in the barn all alone. I'm house-broken.
  • Bridget Drake: Because I haven't any other rooms, idiot.
  • Jimmy Lee: Well, I'll be off to my little cell. If lightning strikes me, at least I'll be alone. That'll be a lucky break for you.
  • Jimmy Lee: I... uh, I... uh got lost and came in to find to where I was, and where do you think II am? Right here.
  • Jimmy Lee: Someday, you're gonna go sailing off in a pink balloon and bump smack into Pike's Peak.
  • Jimmy Lee: Yeah, there she is - the world's greatest female lady authoress.
  • Bridget Drake: Mmm, going to a nightclub to write a last chapter?
  • Jimmy Lee: Or to begin a first one.
  • Bridget Drake: This is Waler Del Canto.
  • Walter Del Canto: Uh, how do you do.
  • Bridget Drake: Walt is my decorator. He'd doing me over. Well, I mean, he's doing over my place in the country.
  • Jimmy Lee: When a girl says that, it means she's got a mash on another guy.
  • Jimmy Lee: Sorry I can't take you for a ride, Woodruf.
  • Bridget Drake: Walt, be amusing, like Jimmy.
  • Mary Howard: Jimmy, never try and be nice, like Walter.
  • Jimmy Lee: There's another one in there.
  • Clare Woodruf: Another one?
  • Jimmy Lee: Yeah. The one I'm nuts about. Always have been and always will be.
  • Clare Woodruf: Well, tell her who I am and how I got here. I'm sure she wouldn't mind.
  • Jimmy Lee: Ah, but you don't understand. You see, I'm... I'm the dust under her feet not the cream in her coffee.
  • Bridget Drake: Darling, look. I'm Bridgie, your old friend. Come on, give.
  • Mary Howard: What are you talking about?
  • Bridget Drake: Business!
  • Mary Howard: Your suspicions, Bridgie, are out of order. Mr. Woodruf is a married man.
  • Bridget Drake: Well, of couse, the good ones always are! Someone has always beaten you to it.
  • Mary Howard: Is she a widow?
  • Jimmy Lee: Practically.
  • Mary Howard: Oh, one of those.
  • Clare Woodruf: But why me? Why didn't you pick one of those beautiful sweet young things, you know, the kind she'd be jealous of.
  • Jimmy Lee: Naw, she knows I wouldn't go for anyone like that.
  • Clare Woodruf: What?
  • Jimmy Lee: I mean, you're just the type she would be jealous of.
  • Clare Woodruf: Ah, ha, that's better.
  • Bridget Drake: What's the matter with you, Jimmy, are you tight?
  • Jimmy Lee: No, certainly not. That's why I'm so nervous.
  • Bridget Drake: Mary's such a fool, but I love her for it. It makes me feel so close to her.
  • Jimmy Lee: Oh, baloney. That big literary talk he gives you is nothing but a, a gimmick.
  • Mary Howard: A gimmick? I'm afraid I'm not up on your vocabulary.
  • Jimmy Lee: Nothing but a line. He's nuts about you for the same reason I am, and it's not because your brainy.
  • Bridget Drake: You know, death isn't nature's greatest mistake - falling in love is. If we didn't do that, all the misery in life would be cut right out of it. Oh, my goodness, so would all the fun.
  • Clare Woodruf: Wait a minute. Did you by chance plan to get lost so this girl would see you with me.
  • Jimmy Lee: Whaaat?
  • Clare Woodruf: Aha, you did.
  • Bridget Drake: This creative business is so funny. You never do know when it's going on.
  • Bridget Drake: Have you ever tried to make something out of nothing, Mrs. Clare?
  • Jimmy Lee: Un, she's working on me now, Bridgie.
  • Bridget Drake: Of course, there's no denying it - the only real unhappiness in life is losing a man.
  • Jimmy Lee: Tell me honestly, Mary, are you in love with Woodruf?
  • Mary Howard: Yes, I am. More than I ever thought I could be.
  • Mary Howard: Do you believe most men think somebody else wants them?
  • Clare Woodruf: Of course. And somebody usually does.
  • Mary Howard: I suppose this will give you an excuse and annoy me all through dinner.
  • Jimmy Lee: Don't you want me to stay?
  • Mary Howard: No, I don't, dear.
  • Jimmy Lee: Hello, Mary.
  • Mary Howard: Hi, Jimmy.
  • Jimmy Lee: I uh, I uh got lost and came in to find out where I was and where do you think I am? Right here.
  • Bridget Drake: Jimmy said that Mrs. Clare is some kind of cousin.
  • Mary Howard: Ohhh? You didn't tell me you had a cousin, Jimmy.
  • Jimmy Lee: Well, there're cousins and cousins. Heh. She's the kind you don't talk about.
  • Clare Woodruf: Jimmy has the makings of a wonderful husband.
  • Mary Howard: Huh, a husband -- are you kidding?
  • Clare Woodruf: He has a quality that's very rare. He's one of those men who's very attractive and never realizes it. And then, too, Jimmy's a one-woman man. When he once found the one he wanted, if he got her, he wouldn't be looking around, ever. That kind makes a marvelous husband.
  • Jimmy Lee: You know, the trouble with a lot of men is they're too smart. They choose to think that the simple things in life like a home and kids and a fireside is all a lot of copy board stuff, meant for children and morons.
  • Rogers Woodruf: Yes. I know that now.
  • Bridget Drake: Mary, do you think I ought to ask them to stay for dinner?
  • Mary Howard: It looks as though Jimmy's already decided that for you.
