The film both Dan and Helen speak of seeing, and which Dan calls "Strange Innertube," was MGM's 1932 adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's "Strange Interlude," with Clark Cable and Normal Shearer. Helen remarks that the characters in that movie speak but then their thoughts made audible reveal their true mindsets - and then she and Dan do the same thing, amending what they tell each other with revealing thoughts the audience can hear.
