The acting is stiff and the story is dull. Lebedeff is one of those exotic Russian matinee idols. The girls are literally swooning over him. It's almost silly. He has the looks, but I wouldn't go crazy. It's an early talkie and they're still trying to iron out the transition. He's not breaking through.
The story, if you even care, is set in pre-revolutionary Russia and SOMEONE is getting battle plans to the enemy and the Russian troops are being slaughtered as a result. So, Captain Orloff (Lebedeff) is used as bait to try to expose the spy among them. But does anyone really even care?!
The bottom line is that you can almost certainly do better than this turkey. Sadly, Genevieve Tobin and the rest in the cast try...to absolutely no avail due to the dull script and inept direction (watch the ballroom scene and note the sound and acting and you'll see and hear what I mean).

- CuriosidadesAccording to producer Pandro S. Berman, the filmmakers were aware that the picture was a "disaster" from the start, and were therefore stunned when audience preview cards came back raving about the talents of leading man Ivan Lebedeff, comparing him to Rudolph Valentino. Later he discovered that Lebedeff had in fact stolen the cards and written all the comments himself.
- Erros de gravaçãoThe date on the invitation for Ivan's reception states Monday, July 6th, 1916. July 6th that year was on a Thursday.

Captain Ivan Orloff: Aw, Baroness, is there anything in the world more alluring as...
Baroness Alma Corri: Yes?
Captain Ivan Orloff: French waltz.
Baroness Alma Corri: You don't care to dance, Captain. You know it. Being a calvary officer you probably don't even like women. Horses are such faithful animals.
Captain Ivan Orloff: But, they can't dance.
Baroness Alma Corri: No? You should see mine waltz me around in Sinaia Park some morning.
