Image
On October 16, rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine was arrested for allegedly assaulting and threatening to kill two of Diamond La Mafia’s music producers in the Dominican Republic.

The producers were beaten up and were left unconscious on the ground for 40 minutes at their studio after the assault.

The victims were identified as Cristian Anthony Rojas and Nelson Alfonso Hilario García, who were working at the studio with the rapper’s girlfriend, singer Yailin La Mas Viral.

The rapper reportedly then tried to leave the country on a private jet but the jet company refused to fly him out after being flagged by Dominican police.

Tekashi 6ix9ine, a New York rapper whose real name is Daniel Hernandez, was released from jail before a court hearing.

On the day of Tekashi 6ix9ine,’s hearing, the producers were seen in bandages still recovering from their injuries. One of them was wearing a neck brace.

Peter Bogdanovich
Blu-ray Review: Peter Bogdanovich’s Crime Thriller Targets on the Criterion Collection
Peter Bogdanovich
Despite it’s very au courant subject matter, Peter Bogdanovich’s first feature was never going to abide by the filmmaking trends of its era. In fact, it would be hard to think of many others in the industry less interested in the then-contemporary vanguard, and more fixated on the way things used to be back in American cinema’s golden age. Nevertheless, Targets emerged in 1968 as something of a bridge between the two generational factions that were in the early stages of splitting Hollywood apart.

Targets is essentially two films in conflict with each other right up to the final minute. Its logline is a ripped-from-the-headlines depiction of what, at the time, was a reasonably unheard-of phenomenon: a mass shooting. Lifting thematic elements of the infamous case of Charles Whitman, who climbed to an observation deck at the University of Texas in Austin, on August 1, 1966, and picked people off with a rifle,...

Today is Boris Karloff’s Birthday – Here Are His Ten Best Films
Article by Jim Batts, Dana Jung, and Tom Stockman

No other actor in the long history of horror has been so closely identified with the genre as Boris Karloff, yet he was as famous for his gentle heart and kindness as he was for his screen persona. William Henry Pratt was born on November 23, 1887, in Camberwell, London, England. He studied at London University in anticipation of a diplomatic career; however, he moved to Canada in 1909 and joined a theater company where he was bit by the acting bug. It was there that he adopted the stage name of “Boris Karloff.” He toured back and forth across the USA for over ten years in a variety of low-budget Theater shows and eventually ended up in Hollywood. Needing cash to support himself, Karloff landed roles in silent films making his on-screen debut in Chapter 2 of the 1919 serial The Masked Rider. His big...

Cummings' Ten-Year Death Anniversary: From Minor Lloyd Leading Lady to Tony Award Winner (Revised and Expanded)
Constance Cummings: Actress in minor Hollywood movies became major London stage star. Constance Cummings: Actress went from Harold Lloyd and Frank Capra to Noël Coward and Eugene O'Neill Actress Constance Cummings, whose career spanned more than six decades on stage, in films, and on television in both the U.S. and the U.K., died ten years ago on Nov. 23. Unlike other Broadway imports such as Ann Harding, Katharine Hepburn, Miriam Hopkins, and Claudette Colbert, the pretty, elegant Cummings – who could have been turned into a less edgy Constance Bennett had she landed at Rko or Paramount instead of Columbia – never became a Hollywood star. In fact, her most acclaimed work, whether in films or – more frequently – on stage, was almost invariably found in British productions. That's most likely why the name Constance Cummings – despite the DVD availability of several of her best-received performances – is all but forgotten.

New Year, New Discoveries
For a dyed-in-the-wool film buff, getting a chance to see movies that haven’t been in circulation for decades is always enticing. Beginning tonight, UCLA Film & Television Archive is presenting a series called Columbia in the 1930s: Recent Restorations. Alongside established titles like Frank Capra’s The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933) and Howard Hawks’ The Criminal Code (1931) you’ll find other films that are virtually unknown: Attorney for the Defense (1932), East of Fifth Avenue (1933), By Whose Hand? (1932), Men in Her Life (1931), and Lover Come Back (1931). Stars include Edmund Lowe, Constance Cummings, Pat O’Brien, Lee Tracy, and Charles Bickford. I can hardly wait! I...

Forgotten Pre-Codes: Her Man (1930)
Beginning a series looking at obscure pre-Code Hollywood films, made between the advent of sound and the strict enforcement of the Production Code. Some of these movies are rightly celebrated and frequently screened: Baby Face (1933), Red Headed Woman (1932), even to some extent Bed of Roses (1933). But others are trapped in copyright limbo or locked in vaults by studios too blind to exploit their holdings. That's the kind we're going to look at.

Tay Garnett was a typical tough-guy director, working in every genre but with a feeling for exotic climes (usually reproduced on the backlot). His reputation—that of a seventh-rate Howard Hawks, maybe—has never been hugely prestigious, and despite his frequently working on the screenplays of Hawks' films, and even making cameo appearances, the notion of Garnett as auteur never really took hold. Maybe, just maybe, this is partly due to the scarcity of some of his most interesting work.

Wolf Man and the beasts that gave birth to cinematic horror
When, and in what dark place, was the horror film born? And why do we love being terrified? David Thomson explains how one Hollywood studio defined a genre

The studio system has gone, even if some of the old names remain in use. No one would dream of a sophisticated romance coming out of Paramount any more, or a musical from MGM. Yet one ghost lives. At Universal, there is still the memory that this is the studio that created Lon Chaney and the working models of Dracula and Frankenstein. Now the beast stirs again, with Universal reviving one of its original horror properties with The Wolfman.

It seems obvious now that one of the inherent functions or opportunities that always faced the movies was scaring the living daylights out of us. When the train came into the station in the Lumiere brothers' early film programme, some in the audience...
