Erich von Stroheim was offered directorship of this film, but declined after having had a negative experience working under Irving Thalberg on A Viúva Alegre (1925). Stroheim went to Paramount to direct and star in Marcha Nupcial (1928).
Leading actress Norma Shearer married MGM executive Irving Thalberg on September 29, 1927--just a week after this film had its premiere. They had been dating for four years prior to getting married.

Each corps is distinguished by ribbons of various colors and designs - as shown in this film - and by distinctive hats. The corps members are also active in the sport of fencing by tradition.
When Kathi shows Karl Heinrich the photo of her fiancé, his name is given at the bottom of the picture as "Alois Hubert," a reference to the film's costume designer Ali Hubert.
