Right from the title director Gia Elliot and co-writer Emma Fitzpatrick make it clear that Take Back the Night isn’t just another monster movie. By using the slogan of many marches and movements protesting violence against women as their title they signal their intention to make this about more than simple scares.

The challenge with that is not letting the message overwhelm the actual plot and the film’s entertainment value. Or worse become heavy-handed and preachy. The Hunting, which I recently reviewed, is an example, its message about veterans and Ptsd taking over what was supposed to be a werewolf film. HBO Max announced the March 3 premiere of its mini-series “The Tourist,” starring Golden Globe nominee Jamie Dornan (“Belfast”). Dornan stars as a British man who is pursued by a large tank truck in the Australian outback, ending with him waking up in the hospital with no memory of his identity. As people from his past follow him around, he begins to look for answers.

The Hunting opens with a vaguely glimpsed furry creature killing a drunken fisherman under the full moon. When he doesn’t come home, his wife Sarah calls in a missing person report, one of several the town is dealing with. Chief Galligan sends Detective Ryan Conner (Peyton Hillis; former NFL Fullback and cover athlete on Madden NFL 12) and his partner Dave (Keith Migra) to look into it. Dave, I should add, is the chief’s son.
