Since Broadway theatergoing has made a full-fledged comeback after shutting down during the Covid-19 pandemic, there's been plenty of big Hollywood names taking the stage. This past year's Tony Awards included nominees best known for film and television, like George Clooney for "Good Night, and Good Luck" and Sarah Snook for "The Picture of Dorian Gray." However, for the pop culture fanatics who maybe aren't well versed in the history of theater, many of these stars don't originate on the screen, but on the stage.
While many casual Broadway fans' introduction to famous shows might be through the best movie musicals of all time, they might not know about these 10 stars of film and television whose careers began as primarily theater performers. Even the likes of big movie stars like Pedro Pascal had plenty of experience performing Shakespearean across the country before becoming a franchise lead, though Pascal sadly is...

What came first – the music or the misery? The perfect needle drop can help elevate a movie to perfection. It’s not the only factor, but when a song hits at just the right moment – be it a character introduction, a moment of realization, a drug deal gone sour… – it can make it the scene. Recently, The Hollywood Reporter spun the hits as they released a list of what they consider the 40 Best Needle Drops in Movies. So let’s take a look, discuss and – as is custom with any professional list – rip it to shreds!
THR made a smart choice in listing the movies alphabetically, therefore foregoing any additional favoritism or having to pick the definitive needle drop as #1. Another rule they implemented was that there could only be one song per filmmaker, although they lifted this for one director specifically – yes, it’s Martin Scorsese.

The last time Paul Simon played a full concert in New York it was July 22, 2018, and he was capping off his Homeward Bound Farewell Tour in front of roughly 30,000 fans at Flushing Meadows Corona Park in Queens. On Monday evening, after seven extremely long and tumultuous years that saw Simon enter his eighth decade, lose nearly all hearing in his left ear, and record the sparse, meditative LP Seven Psalms, Simon returned to New York City for an intimate night of music, new and old, at the Beacon Theatre.

In Vitro immediately plunges the viewer into a chillingly familiar near-future, presenting a science fiction thriller framework that resonates with profound dramatic undercurrents and palpable atmospheric horror. We are introduced to Layla and Jack, a couple whose existence on a remote Australian cattle farm is anything but idyllic.
Their struggle is set against a stark backdrop: a climate crisis has decimated traditional agriculture, making natural resources perilously scarce. In this world, meat is largely a factory product, a synthetic echo of what was. The couple has staked their hopes and dwindling finances on pioneering cloning technology for cattle, a desperate bid to cater to a population still yearning for the “real thing.”
From its initial frames, the film masterfully cultivates a mood of pervasive foreboding. The vast, empty landscapes amplify their isolation, while a palpable bleakness seeps into their interactions. The tension in their marriage is an unspoken third presence,...

Jason George has been playing Ben Warren on Grey's Anatomyand the spin-off series Station 19 since Season 6. And now that the show is in Season 20, he's got some stories about the set. One such story was when George got to work with Denzel Washington back in Season 12. Washington directed the ninth episode of the season titled "The Sound of Silence" when Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) is attacked by a patient and is found by her fellow Grey Sloan Memorial doctors, who then have to rush to try to save her. In a new interview with the New York Post, George talked about getting to work with Washington.

Disturbed frontman David Draiman had a big surprise for his girlfriend Sarah Uli during the band’s concert at Golden 1 Center on Friday (May 9th) in Sacramento, California. The singer called Uli onstage, and proceeded to propose to her, to which she said, “Yes.”
At a quiet point in the set, after the band had played their famous cover of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence,” the heartwarming moment happened when Draiman took the stage by himself and asked Uli to come up from where she was standing in the front of the audience.

Was Dustin Hoffman underpaid for the Graduate? ( Photo Credit – Wikimedia )
While The Graduate shot Dustin Hoffman into stardom, it didn’t exactly fill his bank account. After the film made over $35 million in six months, Hoffman walked away with just $4,000, and a trip to the unemployment line.
Back in 1967, The Graduate changed the landscape of modern filmmaking. Mike Nichols, already a respected director, wanted a lead who looked and felt real. He passed on Hollywood heartthrobs like Robert Redford, Warren Beatty, and Jack Nicholson. They were too confident, too clean-cut. Instead, Nichols rolled the dice on a little-known stage actor with a big nose and nervous energy. That actor? Hoffman.
He wasn’t convinced he belonged on a film set. “I couldn’t sleep, I was so nervous,” Hoffman told Vanity Fair in 2008. “This is not the part for me. I’m not supposed to be in movies.”

Turn Me On includes a question heard repeatedly throughout the film: "Are you content?" This is the robotic greeting spouted by every controlled member of a repressive dystopian society fashioned after Brave New World. The characters take their daily "vitamin," just like Aldous Huxley's "soma," which pacifies the masses into a constant state of orderly submission. You can imagine what happens when our daring protagonist couple stops taking the drug and regains their pulse. Turn Me On is utterly predictable in this regard. There are scant surprises here, but you will have a positive answer to the film's constant refrain. Good character development and infectious lead chemistry make it a worthwhile watch and leave you more than merely content.
Joy (Bel Powley) and William (Nick Robinson) get up from their separate beds. "Are you content" is followed by their morning yoga session, slurping a pre-packaged breakfast shake and popping their blue and white vitamin.

They were made for lovin’ music, too! Evan Stanley (son of Kiss singer-guitarist Paul Stanley) has teamed up with Nick Simmons (son of Kiss singer-bassist Gene Simmons) to record an album’s worth of music together.
Late last year, Evan and Nick posted a video of them singing an acoustic version of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” on Instagram. Now, they’ve taken their musical partnership to the next level.
A few days ago, Evan posted a photo of himself with Nick, captioning it, “One song turned into 10 real quick.” He followed that up with another post of the two performing one of their new tunes alongside singer-guitarist Jacob Bunton, writing, “Wrote this one with our buddy Jacob yesterday.”
Paul Stanley commented on the performance simply with the word, “Magic!!!!,” while Nick’s sister Sophie Simmons wrote, “We Want The Album.”

When it comes to medical dramas, fans can expect a little bit of gore every now and then, especially if it's shown post-watershed. But, since Grey's Anatomy tries to be as medically realistic as possible, it tries to avoid certain motifs and stereotypes. Yet, that doesn't mean that the show isn't teeming with uncomfortable moments or gut-wrenching cases.
While this type of content is subject to taste, many fans feel that the show wouldn't be the same without it. These distressing moments help Grey's Anatomy break away from its workplace dramas and diversify itself from other modern procedurals. So, even though these gory scenes are enough to turn any viewer's stomach, they're integral to the show's canon.

Art Garfunkel revealed that he cried at a recent reunion lunch with his former musical partner Paul Simon.
Garfunkel told The Times newspaper that the duo – responsible for hits including The Sound of Silence and Bridge Over Troubled Water – had not met for many years after falling out. He revealed:
“I looked at Paul and said, ‘What happened? Why haven’t we seen each other?’ Paul mentioned an old interview where I said some stuff. I cried when he told me how much I had hurt him. Looking back, I guess I wanted to shake up the nice guy image of Simon & Garfunkel. Y’know what? I was a fool!”
And he said the pair had made plans to meet again:
“Will Paul bring his guitar? Who knows. For me, it was about wanting to make amends before it’s too late. It felt like we were back in a wonderful place.

It’s been nearly a decade and a half since Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel performed at the American Film Institute’s tribute to Mike Nichols in Los Angeles. The time in between then has been marked with Garfunkel’s four-year struggle to regain his voice after being diagnosed with vocal cord paresis, followed by a delayed Simon & Garfunkel North American tour that never materialized and Garfunkel’s public denouncement of his former bandmate.
However, their long-standing feud has seemed to reach a healing point. Speaking with The Sun, Garfunkel...

If you didn't know that Oscar winner Denzel Washington directed an episode of "Grey's Anatomy," then you almost definitely don't know that he and the show's star, Ellen Pompeo, had a serious conflict during production.
The woman who played series lead Meredith Grey for 19 seasons of the hit medical drama created by Shonda Rhimes opened up about the on-set drama between her and Washington during a 2021 episode of the actress' podcast "Tell Me with Ellen Pompeo." (Pompeo officially left the series in early 2023, but she still regularly appears in episodes and provides the show's voice-over). While chatting with her former "Grey's Anatomy" co-star Patrick Dempsey, whose character Derek Shepherd — Meredith's husband — was killed in season 11, Pompeo discussed the on-set issues she had with the Oscar-winning actor as they worked on a season 12 episode together.

Turn Me On is the second feature from filmmaker Michael Tyburski, known for his directorial debut The Sound of Silence. Starring Bel Powley and Nick Robinson, the movie is a work of dystopian science fiction that explores intriguing themes around human emotions.
The story is set in a future community where feelings are medically suppressed. Each day, residents take a “vitamin pill” that tamps down passions and leaves them calmly content.
Into this sterile world come Joy and William, a young couple who decide to go off their pills. As emotions return, they embark on a journey of rediscovery, celebrating life’s messy beauty but also confronting its complexities.
Premiering at the prestigious San Sebastian Film Festival in late 2024, Turn Me On offers viewers 98 surreal minutes spent in this emotionless society, right up until its two protagonists shake things up by learning to feel again. With his sophomore film, Tyburski...

Intro Love them or hate them, movie trailers are an integral part of the proper moviegoing experience. When you go to the movies, you can expect to see numerous trailers for upcoming films that are generally aimed at the same age range the movie you’re about to see is. Trailers are essentially commercials; short advertisements about two or so minutes meant to draw up interest in upcoming films that moviegoers might be interested in seeing. Does this movie look good? Does it seem right up my alley? Or is it something that I’d never willingly pay to see? It’s the nature of advertising in Hollywood; if you’ve got people paying to go to the movies, it only makes sense to show them what else they might be willing to pay to see. As movies have evolved over time, so have movie trailers. Present-day Hollywood trailers barely resemble those of the 60s.

Over 21 seasons, Grey's Anatomy has had a number of high-profile guest stars and main cast members, such as Sarah Paulson, Christina Ricci and Jesse Plemons. But there have also been big stars behind the camera. In fact, one of the most powerful episodes of the series was directed by actor Denzel Washington, but there was some tension on set between him and lead star Ellen Pompeo.
Washington directed Grey's Anatomy Season 12, Episode 9, "The Sound of Silence," which aired in 2016. The episode focuses on Meredith Grey after she gets viciously attacked by a patient, leaving horrible injuries, including temporary hearing loss and inability to speak. The doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital help her recover both mentally and physically, all while Amelia and Meredith both try to forgive people in their lives. By 2016, Washington had already directed a few feature films, and the Grey's Anatomy episode would be his television directorial debut.

From his era-defining work with Art Garfunkel to the sometimes problematic legacy of 80s hit Graceland, Alex Gibney’s documentary strikes a pure and personal note
Alex Gibney’s docu-celebration of Paul Simon unfolds over an epic three-and-a-half hours, but he persuades you that this is exactly how much time was needed. There is something very involving and very personal here: something to do with the slight, pure line of Simon’s unmistakable vocal presence, vulnerable and even fragile, perhaps, but also insistent and durable. Simon is of course the genius songwriter from New York whose speaking voice, to my ear, sounds increasingly like that of Woody Allen. Gibney’s camera joins Simon – a grandfatherly but spry figure – as he works on his latest choral album Seven Psalms, then flashes back to his earliest years with Art Garfunkel, and brings us up to the present.
Simon says the sensational harmonies...

Just in time for Halloween, the LA Opera has put together a spectacular treat for movie and music lovers: a screening of the rarely seen 1931 Spanish-language Dracula complete with a newly commissioned score by two-time Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla.
The music will be played live by the LA Opera Orchestra under the direction of resident conductor Lina González-Granados. The Argentine-born Santaolalla, 73, also will play electric guitar (but not his signature ronroco).
Suitably, the screenings on Oct. 25, 26 and 27 will take place at the gothic United Theater — a 1,600-seat palace that first opened in 1927 — in downtown Los Angeles. There will be English subtitles, and the audience is invited to come in costume.
Before the advent of sound in the movies, studios could just change the language of the intertitles to get their message across to overseas audiences. But when the talkies arrived, some elected to shoot new foreign-language versions.

One of the country’s most prolific musicians, Paul Simon was born on October 13, 1941, in Newark, New Jersey, and grew up in Queens, New York City. His love for music and gift for songwriting began at a young age, and he has enjoyed a varied career for over six decades.
Simon’s first successes came as one-half of a duo formed with his childhood friend, Art Garfunkel. Their debut album in 1964, “Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.,” flopped. However, the counterculture movement of the 1960s was just beginning, and before long, the duo’s folk/rock blend would become the anthem for that generation, and “The Sound of Silence” became their first hit.
Fueled by Simon’s masterful storytelling, their unique sound and contributions to the 1967 film “The Graduate,” Simon and Garfunkel became two of the most successful and notable musicians of the time. In 1970, the two released their fifth and final studio album,...

He halted his career after decades of hits, then a dream one night changed everything. From New York to swinging London and apartheid South Africa, he explains his epic journey
As a struggling young singer-songwriter in 1960s Queens, New York, Paul Simon would often retreat to his parents’ bathroom. There, with the tiling giving the room an echo and the sound of running taps generating white noise, he’d sit strumming his guitar in the dark. This experience inspired The Sound of Silence – Simon and Garfunkel’s first US No 1 – and one of pop’s most memorable opening couplets: “Hello darkness my old friend / I’ve come to talk with you again.”
“The Sound of Silence was the first song I wrote which seemed to come from some place that I didn’t inhabit,” says Simon, now 82, over the phone from the city where he penned it. “At age 23, it was unusual,...

An ambitious chef (Ariana DeBose) opens her first restaurant in a remote location and faces kitchen chaos, immense self-doubt, and a supernatural presence trying to sabotage her success at every turn. This is the simple, straightforward premise of House of Spoils, written and directed by Bridget Savage Cole and Danielle Krudy (Blow the Man Down), with DeBose as the main attraction. I consider DeBose (West Side Story) a versatile artist unafraid to take on roles in new genres, as her career has shown so far, so expectations were mostly positive.

Quick Links What Is Grey's Anatomy About? What Happens in The Sound of Silence? Praise for The Sound of Silence Pompeo and Washington's On-Set Feud
Although Denzel Washington is arguably the greatest living actor, far fewer people know his directorial acumen. In addition to directing four feature films over two decades, including Antwoine Fisher, The Great Debaters, Fences, and A Journal for Jordan, even fewer people know that Washington directed a single episode of the long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy. And not just any episode, "The Sound of Silence" is often considered among the most compelling chapters in Grey's Anatomy history.
While Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) witnessed a touching send-off to cap Season 20, it has been reported that Pompeo will return for at least seven of the 18 slated episodes for Season 24. If Mac suddenly starts staring into the camera and making meta jokes in Season 17 of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, the fandom already knows who to blame.
Back in December 2023, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia creator and star Rob McElhenney posted a video of him and his Always Sunny partner Glenn Howerton answering questions at a Q&a about the series. In the clip, which McElhenney hilariously scored with “The Sound of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel, Howerton sports a massive smile on his face while watching his longtime friend, colleague and co-star start to answer a question. The upcoming San Sebastian Film Festival just revealed some really cool movies playing in their New Directors section. That part of the festival is all about finding new and upcoming filmmakers from around the world. This year they picked eleven films from places like Argentina, China, France, Georgia, Spain, Thailand, Turkey, and the USA.
The New Directors section will kick off with a documentary called “The Flamenco Guitar of Yerai Cortes.” It follows a Spanish filmmaker named Antón Álvarez as he records an album with a famous flamenco artist. That should be really interesting to music and culture fans.
One of the hyped films is called “Turn Me On.” It’s a funny sci-fi love story directed by Michael Tyburski. The movie stars Bel Powley and Nick Robinson in a future where feelings are banned and people take pills to not feel anything. This is Tyburski’s second feature film after his first,...

In his review of This Closeness earlier this month, Ethan Vestby said, “The film is made with a great deal of formal control, and even though the low stakes and small scale will have it be compared to mumblecore films, this is far sleeker than the average Joe Swanberg joint of yesteryear: long takes, a fixed camera, strategic employment of close-ups, and a rich soundscape (the audio emanating from outside the window of traffic and birdsong is instantly identifiable to anyone living in a city).”

Alex Gibney has Frank Sinatra to thank for his most recent documentary – the two-part Emmy-contending film In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon.
Simon, one of America’s greatest singer-songwriters, saw Gibney’s 2015 documentary Sinatra: All or Nothing at All, and liked it so much he approached the Oscar-winning filmmaker about doing a potential film about his music career. Then, Simon sweetened the deal by inviting Gibney to his home in Texas to see him work on a new album, Seven Psalms.
Gibney joins Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast to discuss what he learned about Simon’s songwriting process and how the artist, now 82, dealt with the loss of hearing in one ear that occurred as Simon was making Seven Psalms.
“It was destabilizing, I think, at first for him,” Gibney observes. The director also shares how a rerecording of Simon & Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” in the...

London- and Paris-based production, finance and sales outfit Film Constellation has boarded international sales on Titus Kaphar’s drama “Exhibiting Forgiveness.”
The film received strong reviews after its January premiere at Sundance in the U.S. Dramatic Competition section, and was picked up for North American distribution by Roadside Attractions, with plans for a wide theatrical release in the fall and awards campaign.

Incorporating iconic songs like "Take On Me" can enhance comedic moments and poignant scenes in movies and TV shows. Songs like "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" can bring humor and light-heartedness to scenes in films like Dirty Work and Wanted. Music choices like "Pony" in Magic Mike can add energy and personality to characters, setting the tone for their on-screen presence.
The most used songs in movies and shows prove that some songs seem perfectly made for a cinematic world. Using the right music in movies and television shows is vital to fully immersing the audience into the world of the story. Storytellers can create a full soundtrack around the whole narrative like Baby Driver and Guardians of the Galaxy. Music can also be used to deepen a specific moment, like at the end of The Graduate when "The Sound Of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel played as the main characters drive away in silence.

When a friend calls, Dave Grohl answers. And when that particular friend is Josh Homme, calling to ask him to make an appearance at the Josh Homme & Friends benefit concert, the Foo Fighters frontman jumped straight into rehearsal mode. Grohl’s process started with pulling up the lyrics to Doja Cat’s rebellious single “Paint the Town Red” and concluded with him penning a completely new song specifically for Homme.
