London calling: This week Deadline donned its blazer, t-shirt and specs for the inaugural SXSW South London, which took place in trendy Shoreditch. The town was abuzz with people and the lineup boasted an impressive bevvy of names ranging from London mayor Sadiq Khan, who kicked off the week by reopening old Donald Trump-shaped wounds, to Idris Elba, to the CEO of OnlyFans. There was even a right royal visit, with King Charles III rocking up to chat with John Lennon’s son Julian and Yellowstone star Mo Brings Plenty, of all people. Philipp Käßbohrer is a writer, director, creator, producer and indie boss and in a sit-down with Deadline before accepting his German TV Disruptor Award said his aim is to keep shaking up the business.

“We see change everywhere in the world right now and I think that the most comfortable way to adapt to this is to follow the stream and go where that change leads you,” Käßbohrer said during the award presentation at the Seriencamp drama confab.

He continued” “You need to take some energy… to get to the places where it’s uncomfortable and where you try to figure out how to adapt, because that’s something the young generation already does. Creators on the internet don’t wait for a commissioner.”

Prime Video Germany has unveiled a major 2025/26 slate at an event at the Balloni Halls in Cologne today.

Set against the backdrop of a mass evacuation of parts of the city following the discovery of unexploded World War II bombs, the Prime Video Presents event revealed a new project with comic actors Anke Engelke and Bastian Pastewka, a remake of adventure reality show The Summit, which we revealed earlier this hour, and Season 7 of Lol: Last One Laughing Germany among its highlights.

A new film from Denis Gansel, The Prototype (working title) was unveiled, and, as we’ve just reported, the premiere date for Maxton Hall – The World Between Us Season 2 was also revealed to be November 7. Several other films and shows were greenlit – read on for full details.

Netflix held it’s annual global fan event, Tudum Live on Saturday evening (May 31) and it was quite the star-studded affair.

The big event was held at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, Calif., with tons of Netflix stars from both scripted and unscripted programming, including Jenna Ortega, Kerry Washington and Sofia Carson, who served as the host of the evening!

Producer, writer, director and indie boss Philipp Käßbohrer will be honored as Deadline’s 2025 German TV Disruptor at Seriencamp in Cologne, the city where his bildundtonfabrik prodco is based.

Käßbohrer and his fellow btf label boss Matthias Murmann created Netflix’s dark comedy-drama How To Sell Drugs Online (Fast). The fast-paced half-hour series has unique visuals with graphic overlays and VFX touches weaved into the tale of a high-schooler’s attempt to sell ecstasy on the dark net. The final episodes of the show dropped earlier this year.

For btf, landing a drama show with the streamer was a big deal. When the series was greenlit the prodco was best known in the German biz for making a popular late-night talk show, but at that point had never made a scripted series.

Five weeks since it first hit Netflix, Adolescenceis still drawing more viewers and crushing more milestones. The acclaimed limited miniseries from Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham remains on the platform's global English Top 10 Shows list, though it has since given up the #1 spot to the hot docuseries Bad Influence: The Dark Side of Kidfluencing, which just barely surpassed it with 9.8 million views compared to 9.7 million. The fall to #2 hasn't slowed its rise on the all-time charts, though, as it has now topped 124 million views and moved into third place among all English-language shows, behind just Stranger Things Season 4 and Wednesday. It's just the latest major feat for the breakout success, which tackles the negative influence of incel culture and manosphere influencers on young men.

Although it was never meant to live beyond its four-episode run, the overwhelming response to the show has shifted the perspective of both Netflix and the series creators.

The fourth and final season of Netflix’s How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) follows a similar pattern to its predecessor, where we see the lead protagonist, Moritz Zimmermann, the trouble magnet, who makes things complicated for everyone around him. If you have seen the previous iterations of the show, then you might be well aware of the reason why Moritz surrounds himself with new troubles every now and then. He has an itch to become a successful entrepreneur like his inspirations, but all he ever was able to design was an app to sell drugs online. I mean, he didn’t exactly write the codes for “MyDrugs,” and it has always been Lenny Sander, his best friend, who did the heavy lifting, but it took a long time for Moritz to finally realize that he needs to stop running after fame and money and take a moment to introspect...

In the ending of How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast)’s final season, the three tech geeks, Moritz, Lenny, and Daniel, who’d always wanted to build something of their own, become rich and famous and put a dent in the universe, finally part ways, and choose their separate paths. [Spoiler Alert] After the whole Brofrost fiasco, Moritz realized that he had always been a narcissist whose actions put his friends’ lives in danger, and therefore decided to fake his death so he could protect his close ones from his own dark shadow. Meanwhile, Lenny’s wife, Kira, had bagged a new coding job in Silicon Valley, and since Lenny wanted to support his wife’s career, he decided to leave BonusLife and move to California. Apple TV+ has announced an eight-episode second season for the German-language dark comedy Where’s Wanda? UFA Fiction produces the series.

The series stars International Emmy Award nominee Heike Makatsch (Love Actually), German Comedy Award winner Axel Stein (The Vault), multiple award-winning actress Lea Drinda (The Gryphon) and Leo Simon, as they return for season two of this “colorful, quirky caper.”

Following its global debut, Where’s Wanda? has been hailed as an “electrifying,” “standout” series keeping “viewers on the edge of their seats” with “a unique blend of dark comedy and suspense,” and featuring “immensely likable, and often affecting performances” by its “talented cast.”

Season one achieved a rare perfect 100% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes. Fans applaud the “beautiful” show as the “kind of gem Apple only seems capable of creating” and “a compelling new addition” to “Apple TV+‘s expanding international offerings.”

The Klatts (Axel Stein and Heike Makatsch) are back!

Apple TV+ has given the greenlight to a second season of its debut German original Where’s Wanda?.

Starring Heike Makatsch (Love Actually) and Axel Stein (The Vault), the dark comedy follows the Klatts. Just as they thought their lives were finally returning to normal, their daughter Wanda (Lea Drinda) is caught seemingly red-handed, standing over a dead body. They will need to do everything in their power to prove her innocence and to avoid losing her again, as their investigation to find the real murderer takes them into the criminal underbelly of their sleepy suburban town.

Where’s Wanda? is produced by Germany’s UFA Fiction. It is one of a number of Apple TV+ non-English language shows, joining the likes of France’s La Maison and Spain’s You Would Do It Too. Yesterday, Apple launched Berlin ER, the German-language medical drama co-created by former emergency room physician-turned-screenwriter Samuel Jefferson.

The Zdf and Bildundtonfabrik feature doc has been picked up by German vendor OneGate Media, which is heading to the UK next week, during which London TV Screenings and the debuting Mip London will be held.

Anonymous Content has partnered with independent production company btf (Bildundtonfabrik) on a new joint venture in Germany, one of Europe’s leading markets.

The partnership will kick off with Ari Folman’s anticipated next project, “Death and the Penguin,” which is based on a novel by Andrey Kurkov.

Btf is a well-established German banner whose credits include “How to Sell Drugs Online,” “King of Stonks” and “Buba” for Netflix, “Pauline” for Disney+ and “Perfekt Verpasst” for Amazon Prime Video.

Anonymous Content will be able to leverage btf’s stronghold in the German marketplace, while btf will tap into Anonymous Content’s ecosystem, in particular the banner’s sales arm AC Studios, to develop and produce premium film and TV projects.

Damian Hardung has opened up on filming the sophomore season of Maxton Hall – The World Between Us.

Avoiding specific spoilers but speaking broadly about his character James Beaufort’s arc in the upcoming series, he said: “I just did the Adr for it and the second season is really dark and [there’s] a lot of grief and trauma in my character.”

He added: “I had a really tough time shooting that, it really pushed me to a point where I’m like: ‘I don’t know if that’s healthy anymore.’ So, I’m really eager to see how that played out on screen.”

Hardung, whose other credits include How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) and Love Sucks, was speaking on the ‘Short Take’ podcast from German Films.

Parkinson is leading Virtually Parkinson, which will be a completely unscripted conversation between a guest and the late TV host – a “world first,” according to its creators. Producer Deep Fusion Films said the AI Parkinson is built using knowledge garnered from his career, including his back-catalog of more than 2000 interviews with some of the most important cultural figures of our time. It is the latest AI series from Deep Fusion and was commissioned by Night Train Media’s fledgling label Night Train Digital, which manages the official Parkinson YouTube channel. Apple TV+’s first German original will premiere globally, with the first two episodes on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, followed by one episode weekly through November 13.

Exclusive: German drama series I Am Scrooge has landed homes in North America, Europe and Australia ahead of its world premiere at Seriencamp in Cologne this week.

Beta Film has sold the Rtl miniseries, which is from the German producer-distributor’s subsidiary Zeitsprung Pictures, to Mhz in the U.S. and Canada, Sbs in Australia, Dr in Denmark, Tet in Latvia and Rtl in Hungary. Launching on Rtl+ in Germany later this year, it will open Seriencamp tomorrow (June 5).

Welcome to Maxton Hall Private School! Prime Video has released the official trailer for Maxton Hall – The World Between Us, which takes viewers into the world of Ruby (Harriet Herbig-Matten) and James (Damian Hardung).

The Original series is based on Mona Kasten’s award-winning, bestselling novel Save Me. Produced by UFA Fiction, the German series tells the modern love story of James Beaufort and Ruby Bell, an upper-class boy and a working-class girl in a world of glamor, prestige, secrets, and drama.

In the series, when Ruby unwittingly witnesses an explosive secret at Maxton Hall private school, the arrogant millionaire heir James Beaufort has to deal with the quick-witted scholarship student for better or worse.

Confirming Germany’s importance as a growth market, Netfix on Wednesday announced 17 new and returning shows and movies produced by some of the country’s leading producers, including docuseries “Kaulitz & Kaulitz,” about the Tokio Hotel popstar siblings, and sci-fi drama “Cassandra,” about an overzealous electronic household helper.

Netflix presented 17 feature films, series, documentaries and reality shows at a special event in Berlin.

“We have seen again and again how local stories can captivate viewers here and around the world,” said Katja Hofem, Netflix’s VP of content for Germany, Austria and Switzerland. “We aim to continue this successful journey together with our partners, sharing a common goal of creating exceptional entertainment that moves and inspires people.”

Produced by Constantin Entertainment and premiering in June, “Kaulitz & Kaulitz” accompanies Tokio Hotel frontmen Bill and Tom Kaulitz, twin brothers from Magdeburg, Germany, on tour with their band and in their new home in Hollywood.

Estonia’s Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (Poff) has unveiled this year’s Black Nights Stars, spotlighting eight rising actors from the Baltic Sea region.

The initiative brings together international casting directors and filmmakers with emerging talent from the region and is part of Discovery Campus, an education programme organised by Industry@Tallinn & Baltic Event (Nov 13-17).

The selection includes Germany’s Langston Uibel, star of Christian Petzold’s Afire, which received the Silver Bear grand jury prize at the Berlinale in February.

It doesn’t exactly sound like something you’d expect to see on Disney+, on paper at least, but Deadline reports today that Disney+ has given the green light to a German series titled “Pauline,” which comes from the team behind Netflix’s How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast).

“Pauline” is said to be a coming-of-age story, so don’t expect too much horror here.

The site details, “Pauline follows an 18-year-old who accidentally becomes pregnant – from a one-night stand. With school stress, the climate crisis and the downfall of society weighing heavily on her mind, something she doesn’t need at all right now is catching feelings, especially not for her one-night stand Lukas, who, as it turns out, is the devil himself.”

Disney+ has unveiled a German original about a teenager who falls in love with the devil from the team behind Netflix’s How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast).

Pauline follows the eponymous protagonist, an 18-year-old who accidentally becomes pregnant – from a one-night stand. With school stress, the climate crisis and the downfall of society weighing heavily on her mind, something she doesn’t need at all right now is catching feelings, especially not for her one-night stand Lukas, who, as it turns out, is the devil himself.

Pauline is penned by Sebastian Colley and EPs are Philipp Käßbohrer and Matthias Murmann, who combined on 2019’s How to Sell Drugs Online (Fast) for Netflix. Arabella Bartsch, Alma Buddecke and Facundo Scalerandi are directors.

Argonon Group, the parent company behind “The Masked Singer U.K.,” has appointed former Jupiter Entertainment executive VP Steve McGovern as COO of its U.S. business with a remit across Leopard USA, Rose Rock Entertainment and future U.S. operations including acquisitions.

Argonon, a global production group headquartered in the U.K. and U.S., owns Scottish indie production company Bandicoot, which makes the U.K. version of “The Masked Singer” as well as “The Masked Dancer.”

As part of the group’s strategic shift to the West Coast and upscaled focus on streamers, networks and platforms, McGovern’s role will be based in Los Angeles. Shirley Escott, currently Leopard USA’s COO, relocates to London to pursue other projects after five years in the post. McGovern will report into Argonon CEO James Burstall and Laura Bessell, Argonon’s global COO.

Internationale Filmschule Köln’s showrunner programme is headed by ’Borgen’ writer Jeppe Gjervig Gram

As the role of showrunner becomes increasingly important in European series production, the ifs Internationale Filmschule Köln’s European Showrunner Programme has secured an additional three years of funding from Creative Europe – Media Programme of the European Union.

The Film-und-Medienstiftung Nrw is on board as a funding partner and Netflix is continuing to support the programme both financially and in terms of experts and content. In addition to Series Mania and the Film Festival Cologne, the ifs has gained the Seriencamp and the Film Festival Göteborg as new festival partners.

Comedy actors Anke Engelke and Bastian Pastewka will star in a new German original series for Amazon Prime Video to be produced by Bildundtonfabrik.

The series is due to appear on the platform next year. Further details on the show have yet to be announced.

“Anke Engelke and Bastian Pastewka are a real dream team in front of the camera. Viewers can look forward to their first series project together on Prime Video,” said Philip Pratt, head of German originals for Prime Video.

News of the show was revealed by Pratt on Tuesday at a panel during the Berlin Film Festival about Prime Video’s international content strategy. Other speakers included head of Nordic Originals, Karin Lindström, and head of Nigerian Originals, Amazon Studios and Prime Video, Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu.

Netflix has unveiled 19 upcoming films and series from Germany, Austria and Switzerland as it works to strengthen its slate of German-language productions.

The projects are part of the streaming giant’s push into local content, doubling investment to €500m between 2021 and 2023. Five films, nine series and five non-fiction titles were showcased at the streamer’s Content Remote Show this morning, offering a preview of the year ahead.

Netflix has doubled its budget to €500 million ($571 million) for German-language productions between 2021 and 2023 and has revealed a raft of new projects.

On Tuesday, the Netflix German-language team presented a selection of 19 productions, including previously announced projects, at the Content Remote Show. The shows are from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

New series include eight-parter “Achtsam Morden” (working title), based on the book of the same name by Karsten Dusse, which topped the Spiegel bestseller list for over nine months and is now being filmed for Netflix by Constantin Film, Jan Ehlert and Nina Viktoria Philipp. Writers Miriam Rechel and Chris Geletneky tell the story of top lawyer Björn Diemel, who to save his marriage, finds a new work-life balance with the help of a mindfulness seminar and accidentally becomes a murderer in the process.
