Hysterically funny meta-take on the killer shark movies

Moving out to meet his brother, a man looking to use the experience to get their childhood dream shark movie script finished find themselves in a killer shark movie when they're hunted by a floating CGI shark throughout the town and must rely on the director and their wits to escape the creature.

This one was an incredibly enjoyable effort. Among the film's best qualities here is the exceptionally knowing series of movie-making satire aimed at the ludicrous nature of killer shark movies. Giving a wrap-around narrative of a mockingly pretentious filmmaker presenting a tale about a woman getting killed by a land shark in a delirious spoof of big slasher movies, this goofy tone is set right away where the film uses him continuously in the role of a narrative force. Breaking the fourth wall to comment on the action to come, this provides not only plenty of hilarity by him being completely at odds with the characters in the scene but goes about commenting on the tropes found in killer shark movies as he helps the brothers understand what's going on, either by showcasing footage from elsewhere in the movie to using a pop-up graphic to explain how the movie rules work. This happens at various points throughout the film and provides absolutely hysterical work every time. That also features into the rest of the film which is absolutely gut-busting the entire time. The mock host playing the director is incredibly funny, as are the vast majority of the side characters they meet who are completely oblivious or unable to realize the danger in this surreal environment. The hard-luck lifestyle compared to his brother's giddy enthusiasm creates even more to life, much like the insane goofiness that emerges in the second half with the idea of giving the shark sentience and the ability to speak. Being allowed to converse with the designer and reveal her new plans of attacking humanity based on her creation creates the impressive feat of venturing so far into ludicrous territory in a perfect manner for this type of film, being so hilarious in conception and execution that it adds to the extremely fun and funny nature of the film. Added alongside to the gut-busting talkshow interlude, a series of great running jokes and various other gags and statements creates a wholly humorous offering. Finally, on top of all that the film manages to include a stellar offering of action scenes featuring the various sharks. The opening's parody-nature starts this off in fine form, moving onto the encounter with the neighbor and finally the house attack that works some impressive stalking and chasing around the notion of a floating CGI shark in their house. The extended chase through the neighborhood with the shark chasing them through the power plant parking lot, through alleyways and into the local ills and streets works plenty of comedic moments as well as the continuous appearances of the shark as a threat. The finale at the beach is a bit too overlong but still comes off perfectly for this kind of film, and when given far better CGI for the main shark than expected while the other sharks look appropriately cartoonish this all comes off fun. When added together with a fine brotherly-love side-story as they come together perfectly, there's so much to like here as the main flaws will be reliant on your personal tolerance for this kind of cheese.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Language and Very Mild Violence.

    Funny and clever. Great Flick

Bad CGI Sharks Directed by MaJaMa. Written by Jason Ellsworth, Matthew Ellsworth and Matteo Molinari

It was all coming to this. It was truly inevitable that when we embarked upon Shark Week 2.0 we would see a movie just like this. A movie that truly embraces the utter insanity that shark movies have become. It knows this. It loves this and it becomes a manic ball of energy that takes the idea of cheap shark movies and blows it up. This movie is insane right from the very beginning. Let me explain...

A magic movie man uses a clapboard to bring the script of two guys to life. They were separated from each other after their youth so one would become a success and not indulge in their shark related fantasies. What this does though is bring a bad cgi shark to life and it wreaks havoc. This is just the beginning because not only does this CGI shark talk and have a personality, it brings along three cartoon sharks as well.

Bad CGI Sharks indulges in this and the rest of the cartoon carnage that it brings. You know from the very beginning that this movie is one hundred percent a comedy and pretty funny at that. There is one character there who is the straight man who has his life turned upside down by his Hollywood and shark loving man child of a brother and the magical movie man who steps from behind the curtain to interact with his characters. This movie has some really interesting touches. Clever creativity went into this movie.

This is the beauty of independent cinema. You get films like this. It takes the concept of bringing to life bad CGI effects. It gives its shark a complete personality. It hates being a part of this fantasy. It yearns for something more. It is not that different from the two brothers. They remember a time when their dreams, however outlandish were possible.

It also utilizes the bad CGI shark for comedic effect. There is one scene in particular where the shark is trying to catch its prey and it is being forced to render repeatedly. The characters even live in a fantasy version of Hollywood where other people don't even exist. It's a trip.

I give this movie a B. Definitely worth checking out. This was the one movie in this entire thing that my wife picked out personally and it ended up being the best one. I'm never living that one down.

    It's beyond stupid

Yes, this is beyond stupid and of course, the effects are lousy and there is basically no budget.

Yes, there's no real story - but it's better than The Godfather.

Having watched the Godfather yesterday, I was bored beyond what I could handle. The Godfather is highly over-rated and having tried watching it 3 times, I never found it entertaining at all - however as poorly made as Bad CGI Sharks may be, it's still more entertaining than the most highly over-rated film of all time...

    The Godfather.

So, yes this movie is stupid in so many way - but I enjoyed it more than many big name, Hollywood big budget movies.

This does not mean by any measure that there should be more films made like this...because there shouldn't be.

1 of this type of movie is enough - but to the writers, actors and director and everybody else involved in this mess - be proud that it's a better movie to me than The Godfather and make your next movie far better than this.

It's also too long to actively sit through sober and try to watch this unless you are tripping on some sort of drugs or totally drunk.

    Weird, Quirky, Enjoyable

There was so much about this movie that was just.... odd. It was add choice after questionable choice, after inadvisable choice. If you tried to explain the characters and plot of this movie to me I would have never watched it. Yet, despite all that it somehow was quite enjoyable. The movie managed to capture a charm that made the experience worth while. This parody of the Shark genre paid homage to what the creators loved about the genre, and you could feel their passion in the work. But most of all I can't emphasize enough how gosh darn weird this movie was.

    Funny and Full of Heart

This is one of the best films of 2019, certainly one of the funniest. There is no part of this that I did not enjoy. From Bernardo the Omniscient Narrator to Jason with his wacky hairstyle and incredible energy to Matthew's character arc from skeptic to savior, this film wrangles several emotions and blends them perfectly into a whirlwind of meta comedy, self-aware takes on sharksploitation, and the dynamic between two siblings. I love this film and own it on every platform on which it is available.
