Great but could of been done in 4-5 episodes

Great show, but found myself looking at emails and doing laundry because it would go off on tangents. The acting is great! I never read the book it is based on. There are so many great characters, and it felt like a long version of the movie "Clue". There are just so many episodes that LAGGGGGG and LAGGGGG and LAGGGG. The first couple are great but 3-5 I really found so boring, yet I watched (even while doing other things), so maybe I missed something important, but I REALLY wished they would have shortened this down!

It is a good show, but, again, some episodes we could have done without or shorten them.

Don't Out A Price On Comedy

For those who find this series too long consider this, the plot, the mystery and all the plot twists are not nearly as important as the comedy and the wonderful performances in this fun story. It was smart without being pedantic, funny without being crude or silly, and engaging without pandering. The humor was evenly split between the genius of the writing and the innate ability of the actors. Not once did I feel like the characters were anything other than what they were portrayed to be. In a world where comedians are improving their way through movies, creating interest where the writers had failed and totally carrying the show, this series proves how important it is to had professional writers and actors working together. If I see another rapper, comedian, ex-jock, singer, model, or internet influencer, leading a movie instead of a professionally trained actor, I will drop dead out of boredom. Thank you for making this funny movie without having any puking, pooping, peeing, or farting scenes in it! No one smoked weed or was inadvertently naked either. The language was appropriate for family viewing and yet I hung on every word. And finally I have to save they weren't interested in trying to cast the prettiest people but was more interested in assembling a capable cast of characters who could carry out their vision. I loved it! I hope another season is coming.

I Need A whole Franchise From Cordelia (Extra season+Films)

A fantastic "cozy"-style mystery: light, wickedly clever, and keeps you guessing to the very hand. Uzo Aduba as Cordelia Cup is a great lead. The supporting cast has additional strong characters as well, though some of these portrayals are less even. As much as I enjoyed the first season and wish for more, I find it hard to imagine how a second season could live-up to the first: further developing the Cup character (so that she is not just a repetition of the Cup we already know) will be hard. But, then, Columbo was consistently great season after season. Cmon Netflix do the right thing here and renew it !

A lot of different predecessors tied into one

This show looks and sounds quite a bit like 'Only Murders In The Building', and it is quite similar. As if the female detective from season on of OMITB had her own show. But then it rolled out similar to a 'Thin Man' movie and/or an Agatha Christie plot with hints of Upstairs Downstairs.

It's quite entertaining and stands on its own. Each potential suspect has their own story, the writing is witty and the plot is THICK with all kinds of cobwebs. Everyone has a motive, even the guests at a state dinner. Detective Cupp is a very interesting woman and I enjoyed her analogies to birds and situations. I see a franchise waiting to happen and I am here for it.

Shocked how good this is

This is a GREAT show. I have been laughing out loud, it's hilarious. I feel like I'm reading a really good book. The pace is perfect for the story which is non stop fun. Can I just say....whoever edited this is a genius. As a full time professional editor myself, editing is the first and main thing Im looking for in a film/show. I can't imagine how much work it took to edit this type of show with every flash back, flash forward and present time which never feels messy, amazing work. They found the perfect flow, matched with great music. I can imagine it must have been fun tho. Looking forward to finishing it off. If I don't see this show getting super high ratings I will be shocked for sure. Enjoy.

AMAZING PLOT but dragged out too much

In the beginning I thought it was going to be another boring show, but I was pleasantly surprised when I found myself watching this in one sitting till the very end.

The show reminds me a mix of Sherlock BBC and Poirot but more modern and lighthearted. Every single character has their own plot, motivation that made me guessing till the very end. Overall in the writing aspect it was incredibly smart and i was thoroughly impressed.

However, this show is the definition of milking something till the very end or dragging it (no pun intended). An 8 episode show each episode roughly an hour long could have literally been a 1hr and 30minute movie. But the writers decided to just keep adding things, unnecessary plot that has no connection to the actual story whatsoever.

I would have love for this to be a continuing series but please for the love of god keep each case to 2-3 episodes.

Worth Everyone of These Nine Stars!

This was amazing. That could be my whole review but that won't work here. The acting, the intricately woven plot and the ensemble cast were just top notch. The story of the murder of a head usher at the White House being murdered during a state dinner would have been interesting enough to me, but add in Detective Cupp and her eccentric personality and bird obsession and this was a pure winner. I just knew I had it all figured out, but not even close and I'm usually good at this kind of thing. There's 8 episodes which might seem like a lot but I was so fascinated that I watched all 8 in two sittings. I'm really hoping for season 2 with all new characters except for her and some of the other law enforcement characters. Netflix, I hope you are listening!

Good Plot, Screenply and Treatment- But a bit sluggish

This is really a GREAT TV-show. Every one of us in my family was laughing out loud, it's funny.

The cast have performed well in a very keen observation but freedom given by the director.

I felt like, I was reading a really good novel. The pace is perfect for the story which is non stop fun.

Can I just say.... Editing was a work of a genius.

Slow to start, but becomes must watch drama.

A. B. Wynter The Chief Usher at The Whitehouse is killed, Cordelia Cupp is brought in to investigate, it's a sensitive time as The President is entertaining The Australian Prime Minister. Cuppa puts the building on lockdown, but her enquiries are hindered by lies and evasion.

Stick with it, that's my advice, just stick with it, I'm going to say I loved it, I have thoroughly enjoyed it, but I found it a little slow to start, for me the first two episodes were a little frustrating, once it got going though, I was hooked.

The final two episodes had me absolutely captivated, the way in which all of the pieces of the puzzle fall into place, it's so satisfying. Arguably it could have been done in fewer episodes.

There's nothing like a Whodunnit, it gets your brain working, and if you're like me, you moved from The Pastry chef, to Sheila, to lily to the next one, who doesn't love a puzzle.

It has more of a Knives out vibe, it's smart, definitely not your Agatha Christie style murder mystery.

It's quite funny at times, in a subtle sort of way, I thought Sheila was a laugh, plus the hope of getting to see Hugh Jackman.

The characters are so rich, even those that seem not to have any significance early on, soon offer something.

Uzo Aduba does a great job as Cordelia, I'd love to see more of the character, she's one smart cookie.

Very watchable.

8/10.

Much Like the Party Guests, It Overstays Its Welcome

This show is a bit of a conundrum. On one hand it has all the pitch perfect elements of high end entertainment; humor, an all star cast, a fun setting, a twisty story. But on the other hand, it drags like a wet mop, especially in the last three episodes where it reveals crucial information in clumsy chunks for sake of pushing the plot forward. There is a near masterpiece show buried here that needed a few more rounds of refinement to tighten up, although I'm fairly certain Netflix forced the show runners to stretch this story over 7 episodes. If it had been 4 episodes, where every detail mattered and every revelation built to something greater, this may have been one of the best detective shows of all time. Instead we're left with 5 episodes of red herrings that we know are red herrings from the outset for sake of painting by numbers. Ultimately the payoff is satisfying but not mind blowing like the Usual Suspects or The Orient Express, which will keep the show from having much staying power. Enjoyable? Absolutely. Genius? Not even close.

Got lost in the ambitious plot

As they say, you can't be everything to everyone. The pace, writing, and the number of characters, and all the subplots - simply just makes you exhausted.

By episode 3. I felt I really had given enough time to really start moving the narrative. But it's just a continuation of more of the same.

I also think the overall plot just wasn't interesting enough to be a tv series. Perhaps it would be have been better suited as a film.

Overall what drew me in the first 30 minutes, is what pulled me away. It's a shame since I know the creators and exec producers involved are industry vets who have delivered fantastic series in the past.

But this one got away, too complex, too many characters (most you never get to know in depth and personally didn't care for) and far too many subplots to introduce that the overall series plot gets lost.

So this one is a pass for me.

Well such a surpise

I was not expecting this at all.

I came across this series and thought ok lets give it a go and I was captivated.

Clever writing, awesome acting, funny, cutting, and extremely high production value.

Based on Kate Andersen Brower's historical book which reveals daily life in the White House as it is really lived through the voices of the maids, butlers, cooks, florists, doormen, engineers, and others Paul William Davies crafts a tremendous fiction -- a death in the White House during a State Dinner and what happens next. Narrated by a Senate Hearing with all the associated jazz and bull.

The "people" - the policos and their appointees - are as to be expected revolting and played very well.

Consulting Detective Cordelia Cupp - a title gleaned from Sherlock - wonderfully "unique" and playful.

And the rest -- well there is politics and venom in any work-place - more so in a palace or the White House.

Lots of twists and turns, many surprises and a great show.

Very cool. Great Job.

I loved it!

OMgoodness!! I knew when I saw it was from Shondaland that it would be good - but I didn't expect this! So good from the first episode to the very end!! Great rabbit holes to throw you off the trail! Uzo Aduba was amazing in the role of Cordelia - as were all the cast! You love them, you hate them, you blame them and then hear the backstory. Only thing I didn't like was the imitation of Hugh Jackman (not needed). Funny, intriguing and I loved the bird info. I highly recommend this series and I hope that there will be a season two and beyond to follow ( like the Knives Out series). More Cordelia please!!

Cordelia Cupp my new, favorite detective

This series is fantastic. The perfect blend of mystery, intrigue, wit and comedy. The multi-talented Uzo Aduba is surrounded by a wonderful ensemble.

The storyline takes off immediately with a murder with Cordelia arriving on scene in the midst of chaos and being pressured heavily to consider the murder a suicide. Cordelia has an amazing skill set to disregard anything but the truth and reading people even when being lied to. Randall Park who can quietly steal a scene plays the role of Edwin Park who Cordelia reluctantly puts up with.

Make sure to save time because this is one you are going to want to binge!!!

A Slow Burn Worth Every Second - Detective Cordelia Shines

I watched this series in just two days-squeezed in before and after work. That alone says a lot. As someone who reads manga and watches anime regularly, I'm used to slow burns and have the patience to wait for a plot to unfold, knowing the payoff will be worth it-and this one absolutely was.

Patience is key here. If you're not ready to immerse yourself and let the story simmer, maybe just stick to your reels. But if you are, you'll find a series that keeps your mood light, your curiosity piqued, and your heart engaged.

The humor kept my mood pleasant throughout, and while there were moments in the middle that felt a bit off or confusing, they only made me more intrigued. I'm glad the story took the time to explore the intricacies behind Detective Cordelia-understanding why she is the way she is made the entire experience feel even more rewarding.

Tooooo looooong

It is fun and clever show. Though there is a major flaw: at least 4 episodes too much. I would have given 8 stars if they cut those four episodes. In fact there is no reason to extend the show other than expend money and our patience.

If you want a brilliant and free advice just transform episodes three to seven in just one. Once it is too late , it is done and there is no solution I urge the viewers to cut to the chase and accept to pass directly from the end of third to episode eight. You want miss much and on the contrary you will win a lot of time to invest in another show.

No need to thank me. Enjoy.

This was amazing!

While this is the definition of bingeable "content", I think a weekly release would have given it so much more hype and a lot more people would be asking for more Cordelia Pupp adventures. It's about time Only Murders In The Building has some competition (and one with a much higher production value), and I don't think this made the splash it could have made with a weekly release schedule, let's just hope more and more people discover it in time.

While I can understand why someone would find it too drawn out, I definitely enjoyed every episode, even though in the beginning I thought this would be a disaster with so so many characters. But every one is well written, the cast is amazing, the quirks and laughs are there but don't feel forced, the mystery is well laid out and the solution isn't something crazy that would make you feel you wasted your time.

Everything was much better than I expected, everyone brings their A+ game, the production design is insane, the editing and the music glue everything together, Netflix please please please do the right thing and order at least 3 more seasons of this!

Did they get paid by the minute?

The show is fine. Entertaining and interesting at points. But they could have made the same show with episodes half the length - or less. The final episode is interminable with perhaps the most dialogue a single character has ever had in a show or movie. So many flashbacks that it almost becomes a parody. The acting is ok, although quite a few characters verge on annoying. To the extent that it is true, the behind the scenes of the White House is interesting. I need to type more to finish this review, but there isn't enough substance in the show to comment further. So, I'll just end leave it at that.

Where's Al Franken's Credit????

This is a funny, fast-paced comedy that's worth watching. Shame on IMDb for not listing Al Franken, in the role he was born to play. He's the U. S. Senator who is heading the inquiry into the death of A. B. Wynter, (the deceased member of the White House staff).

Cordelia Cupp is called in to figure out who-done-it, as a well-respected consultant to the D. C. Police. Between her bird watching and crime solving, she's a regular Agatha Christi, Sherlock Holmes, and Charlie Chan, all rolled into one sharp detective. Harry Hollinger, the Chief of Staff is expertly played by a very suspicious, Ken Marino. Harry is quick to spin facts, to protect himself and The President at any cost. He plays a political buffoon like a pro. My first instincts were to watch because I like anything Shonda Rhimes has produced. I've only seen a couple of episodes so far, and this series has me hooked from the start. Everyone's a suspect. Questions come fast and lies are met with smart counter punches that sting. I love the back and forth banter. The attention to details about how the White House are very well researched, and lots of tidbits of a historical nature are interspersed by members of the staff who have spent years working through various Presidential terms. It is well-written, and I can't wait to find out how all the twists and turns of this murder are pieced together in the end.

Should have been a lot shorter

I like the genre but this became more and more uneasy to watch. Its just too long and gets boring since every episode only reveals a bit of what happened that night and theres a lot of nonsens in between. It also did not really feel like a comedy since we didnt laugh. So after episode 4 thought I could check only the last episode to see who did it but I decided to give it a chance. Wish I hadn't done that. It didn't change so we both were doing other stuff whilst this was on. Guessed the correct murderer but I didnt care anymore because the way to the plot became a boring struggle.

It would be great it this was a movie or had only 4 episodes.

We both felt this was a waste of our time.

Way too much time, characters, subplots

Too much. There were too many characters to care about any of them. I feel like 99% of the dialogue was given to Det. Cupp and all it did was over expose her.

Half of what Cupp said could have been said by the guy that was her Captain. That character was a real waste of a good actor's talent. The same goes for the FBI agent.

Half of the characters and half of the sub-plots may have held my interest. But as it, the whole thing is chaotic and often quite ridiculous.

I enjoyed the Cordelia character but I would have preferred to have a little less of her. It would have worked better if the police captain or the FBI guy had been the one with the bird obsession.

Fantastic and memorable murder mystery

This is a very well done light hearted, murder mystery.

Top marks to the writers who wrote a tight script and plot and yet managed to sprinkle it with humor. Every episode, they managed to change my mind as to who the killer is. In fact, in the final episode, they managed to make me suspect everyone again!

But the piece de resistance is how the cast brilliantly brought to life each of the characters. From Uzo Aduba confident but quirky detective Cordelia Cupp, Randall Park comedic sidekick, the ever stoic Giancarlo Esposito to the myriad personalities of the residents. By the final episode, I felt like I've gotten to know each of the residents and their quirks and life story. And yes, they sticked the landing on the murder mystery too.

It'll probably be a little better if it was shortened to six episodes as it lost its momentum a bit in the middle. But still this is a fantastic series.

You'll come for the murder mystery but stay for the residents.

Incredibly charming crime limited series

I absolutely enjoyed the show, and the tropes it threw at you.

The acting was lovely, and the use of flashbacks and repeated scenery was better than what I have seen in ages.

Occasionally it did struggle from having "famous extras" who would be pulled in immediately - so you always knew who was key.

I would have also enjoyed more visual clues as the show went a long, with a classic whodunnit being ultimately revealed early with minor clues, but here it definitely extended its welcome by perhaps an hour or more.

If the pacing had been better in the middle episodes I do believe this could've been a 9 or a 10.
