Ryan Reynolds, Taylor Sheridan and John Krasinski Among Hitmakers Paramount Skydance Needs to Keep Happy
Image
David Ellison finally has his prize.

On Thursday, the Skydance Media founder closed the $8 billion merger with Paramount Global that he orchestrated, enduring political turbulence and skepticism about the viability of the company’s TV and movie empire for over a year. In order for the deal to pay off, Ellison, who will serve as chairman and CEO of the newly rechristened Paramount Skydance, must maintain strong partnerships with the creative community. Before the sale, Paramount has lacked the financial resources of competitors like Disney and Netflix, but it has been the home of top talent. Keeping them happy and busy cooking up ideas for new film, TV and streaming franchises will be critically important if Paramount Skydance wants to outmaneuver other studios.

On the film front, look for the new regime to try to maintain or even extend some crucial first-look deals as Josh Greenstein and Dana Goldberg, who will oversee the studio,...

Alex Kurtzman has mapped out a limited run for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
Image
As Starfleet Academy continues to film, creator Alex Kurtzman is assuring fans that this show has got its semesters all planned out!

For a franchise meant to look to the future, Star Trek has spent a lot of time in the past. Picard brought back the Next Generation crew while the first seasons of Discovery suffered from trying to be a prequel to The Original Series. Strange New Worlds ran with that, continuing to build toward Tos.

However, Discovery boosted itself with the third season, where the ship was sent into the 32nd century after a cosmic disaster ravaged the warp drive and left the Federation in tatters. The crew worked to solve the problem with the Federation rebuilding itself. This will set up Starfleet Academy, which will follow the first new Academy class in a century.

The series will mix a fresh cast with faces like Oscar winner Holly Hunter...

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’s ‘Discovery’ Connection Explained: 5 Key Details
Image
The latest show in the franchise, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, has a key connection to the show Discovery. The show, which had its first teaser dropped at Sdcc last weekend, will follow a new batch of Starfleet members as they train and begin their duties aboard the USS Athena. Several details regarding the setting have come out since.

Co-showrunner Alex Kurtzman mentioned that the aftermath of Discovery is an intrinsic part of the series, especially The Burn, a cataclysmic event in the 32nd Century when the universe’s dilithium went inert, severely affecting the starships’ warp drive capabilities.

Kurtzman said that it was important to explore that time in the Star Trek universe (LA Times).

My thinking was, if we set Starfleet Academy in the halcyon days of the Federation, where everything was fine, it’s not going to speak to what kids are going through right now.

The connection to Discovery is important,...

'Starfleet Academy's New Captain Was Written With an Academy Award-Winning Actress in Mind [Exclusive]

Writing with a specific actor in mind is not unheard of in Hollywood. Sometimes it’s a matter of circumstance that the right people behind the show want to make sure they have a key player among their cast. ‘Hostel’ TV Adaptation Starring Paul Giamatti Finds Home at Peacock
Image
Peacock is offering a place to stay for a Hostel series project from filmmaker Eli Roth and star Paul Giamatti.

The NBCUniversal streamer will develop the project, which is based on Roth’s mid-2000s horror movies about an underground network of wealthy people who kidnap and torture young tourists staying in hostels. The show, which THR reported was in the works in 2024 (but without a home), comes from Fifth Season.

Oscar nominee and Emmy winner Giamatti, an avowed horror fan, is set to star in the show, though details of his role are being kept under wraps. The Hostel series project is described as a present-day take on the concept.

Roth, who wrote and directed 2005’s Hostel and 2007’s Hostel: Part II, is set to write, direct and executive produce the Peacock project. The films’ producers, Mike Fleiss and Chris Briggs, are also EPs. (A third Hostel film, made without Roth’s involvement,...

Gina Yashere Talks Life After Losing Home in L.A. Wildfires: “The Universe Gave Me a Good Kick”

It took comedian and actress Gina Yashere’s house burning down in the L.A. fires to make her decide to leave, at least for now, the America she longed to get to as a child growing up in the East End of London.

“I’ve left. The universe gave me a good kick, ‘you need to get out of America,’ by burning down my house in Altadena,” the Bob Hearts Abishola co-creator and star tells The Hollywood Reporter at the Just For Laughs comedy festival in Montreal.

Yashere’s home in a Black community in Altadena, just west of downtown Los Angeles, was destroyed in the Eaton fire that started on Jan. 7. She recalls getting the tragic news while in Costa Rica, where she has a second home.

'Strange New Worlds' Season 5 Only Exists to Fulfill a Promise Made to Fans [Exclusive]

Earlier this year, Star Trek fans got the disappointing news that Strange New Worlds would be ending after a truncated fifth season. They discussed the show's final season with Collider's Steve Weintraub at this weekend's San Diego Comic-Con.

Co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman explained how the six-episode fifth season — which is four episodes shorter than a standard Paramount+ Star Trek season — was a compromise with the network. "The original messaging from the studio as we were done, they wanted us to be done after 4." He went on to add:

"We had made a commitment to the fan base, and to the narrative, that we would get right up against Tos [The Original Series], like we’d about it, because there are a lot...

‘Starfleet Academy’ Teaser, a ‘Khan’ Audio Series, and Puppets: The Future of ‘Star Trek’ Is Here
Image
The future of “Star Trek” is here and it truly is boldly going to some new and undiscovered places. (Check out our ranking of every “Star Trek” live-action show). The message from Paramount+’s presentation for the franchise July 26 at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H isn’t boundary- and format-pushing alone: It’s clear that they want to package new things with some heavy doses of the familiar — major stars, beloved returning franchise vets, and some cutesy gimmicks.

Take a look at the teaser for “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.”

There are a ton of new faces there for the 32nd Century-set show, as much of the cast is teenage and 20-something newcomers. And it’s set in a time period, post-“Star Trek: Discovery” that allows for all-new storytelling completely unrestrained by preexisting canon. But that’s also a lot of unfamiliar stuff, and audiences can need a little...

Star Trek 4's Production Changes Contributed To The Director's Exit In Detailed Report
Image
In February 2022, Paramount (re)announced that it was developing Star Trek 4, intended to be the fourth and final installment in Captain Kirk's Kelvin timeline era, but multiple directors have come and gone on the project. Since that initial exciting announcement, Star Trek 4 has languished in development.

One such director was The Fantastic Four: First Steps leader Matt Shakman, who, fresh off the success of Disney+'s WandaVision, was set to direct Star Trek 4 in 2022 before being reeled in by Marvel Studios. In a new profile published by Variety, Shakman revealed that progress on Star Trek 4 was coming along swiftly that year. "We had stages, we had crew, we were moving ahead," he explained.

At the same time, Shakman met with Marvel execs and producers about Fantastic Four, and they were immediately convinced he was the right man for the job. Committing to Marvel's first...

How ‘Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ producers held Paramount+ true to the promise of a 5-year mission
Image
Star Trek: The Original Series didn’t not get to complete its opening narration’s now-legendary promise of a “five-year mission,” having been canceled just three seasons into its original network run on NBC, from 1966 to 1969. But the showrunners of the current Paramount+ prequel series, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, were determined to make good on that promise.

During a Zoom interview to discuss Snw’s upcoming third season, executive producers Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers told Gold Derby that Paramount+ initially wanted to conclude the series at the end of its forthcoming fourth season, currently in production. But the producers gently reminded the streamer of the implicit obligation to longstanding fans of the franchise, which resulted in a more symmetrical mission for the Enterprise and its crew, several of whom go on to serve on the original series under Captain James T. Kirk.

“Obviously, Henry and I would...

Has ‘Star Trek’ Lost Its Way?
Image
At the start of the opening credits of each episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Anson Mount delivers a variation of the same famous speech that so many Trek captains have recited before him, about space being the final frontier, the voyages of the starship Enterprise, and how the mission is to boldly go where no one (or, in the Sixties, where no man) has gone before.

But as the third season of Strange New Worlds is set to debut Thursday on Paramount+, Star Trek as a television franchise...

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy reflects Gen Z's real-world challenges

Consequently, the 32nd Century Federation is in rehabilitation mode. The Federation is encumbered by interstellar dissension, the ongoing mental trauma and mass mourning of lost loved ones, and the slow degradation of trust and confidence within this 900-year-old institution. Can it be rebuilt to its former glory and dominance in the galaxy? Can the new cadets cope and still learn to become capable Starfleet ensigns?

A new way to represent...
