A beautiful thing about superhero movies and TV shows is that they can do things comic books can’t. The main reason for that is that the source material has to worry about continuity or things getting too silly or violent. Without that restraint, you see things from Batman, Superman, and others that won’t happen in their issues.

This list will highlight 10 odd, wild, and sometimes unhinged moments in DC Comics TV shows and movies. Some of them are funny, while others are destructive, vile, and flat-out weird. Let’s start with a scene of accidental pleasure.

Gen V is a superhero action dark comedy-drama series co-developed by Craig Rosenberg, Evan Goldberg, and John Higgins. Based on Volume 4 titled “We Gotta Go Now” of The Boys comic book series by Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson, and John Higgins. The Prime Video series is a spin-off of The Boys, and it revolves around a group of superpowered teens attending the Godolkin University School of Crimefighting as they find themselves embroiled in a deadly conspiracy involving a supe-killing virus. Created by Glen Powell and Michael Waldron, Hulu is suiting up for one of its quirkiest sports comedies, Chad Powers, with a talented cast of actors, which includes Powell, Steve Zahn, Toby Huss, Perry Mattfeld, Clayne Crawford, Wynn Everett, and others. The show is based on Eli Manning’s viral 2022 Chad Powers sketch and follows disgraced quarterback Russ Holliday (Glen Powell), who tries to reboot his career by disguising himself as the hilariously fake-but-deadly serious Chad Powers.

Directed by Tony Yacenda with Eli and Peyton Manning as producers, Chad Powers will premiere on September 30, 2025, with the first two episodes dropping on Hulu the same day, followed by weekly releases.

The DC Universe is officially in full swing, with Superman being a box office success and Season 2 of Peacemaker officially on our screens. The rebooted franchise recently got even more good updates, with the Clayface film officially entering production and Lanterns moving along swiftly. But, for every Dcu project that receives a positive update, there's another that falls through the cracks. With multiple projects in the pipeline for the newly constructed Dcu, James Gunn is assuring fans that, among them, is a long-gestating series focused on Task Force X leader Amanda Waller, originated onscreen by Oscar winner Viola Davis in 2016’s Suicide Squad.

Speaking to People in a recent interview, the Superman helmer confirmed he and DC Studios co-ceo Peter Safran are still “working on” the show.

He said, “We’re working on it, so we’ll see what happens. Some things have moved faster than others. Waller’s not been the fastest. But I can’t wait to see Viola put on their Waller pants again.”

Gunn is echoing sentiments both he and Safran expressed back in February, telling Deadline then that Waller — about the amoral U.S. government espionage director who dispatches the criminal misfit Suicide Squad team on missions — remains in the works, despite the project remaining difficult to break.

Team Peacemaker is back — and this time, they’re in the Dcu.

Thursday saw the launch of the second season of “Peacemaker,” a spin-off of James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” starring John Cena as the titular vigilante on a long, slow journey toward redemption. It’s one of the biggest seasons of television in DC history, with Gunn teasing strong ties to the new DC movie universe.

But “Peacemaker” is far from the first successful DC show. The comic book brand has had a long, storied history on television, with a number of hit series in both live-action and animation across various networks.

While the show was announced some three years ago, James Gunn admits that The Suicide Squad's next spinoff, Waller, is taking longer than expected. Having debuted as the iconic DC character in 2016's Suicide Squad, Viola Davis has carried the role of A.R.G.U.S. director Amanda Waller through Gunn's standalone sequel, Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam, and the first seasons of Peacemaker and Creature Commandos.

Following her appearance in the former TV show, it was announced that a Waller spinoff show was in the works at HBO Max, with Christal Henry writing and showrunning alongside Doom Patrol's Jeremy Carver. It’s the kind of comic book that knows it’s a comic book, revels in being a comic book, weaponizes its comic bookiness—and dares you to keep reading anyway!

Alan Tudyk voiced Clark Kent / Superman in the 2014 animated movie Justice League: War. It features one of the best scenes between the Last Son of Krypton and Batman, which I don’t mind James Gunn stealing for his rebooted Dcu. In the movie, Batman and Superman meet for the first time, leading to an epic fight scene that culminates with the two allying with each other for the greater good.

Since the Dcu will introduce its Batman in the future, a meetup between the Dark Knight and Superman is inevitable. The characters meeting for the first time will also set the tone for the Dcu’s Justice League, which makes the animated scene the perfect template for a live-action meet-up between the two heroes, and here is why Gunn needs to recreate it.

Alan Tudyk has revealed the surprising reason he got dropped from the marketing and press for I, Robot in the lead-up to its release in 2004. The sci-fi thriller was led by Will Smith, who stars as Del Spooner, a detective tasked with investigating the alleged suicide of a U.S. Robotics founder, as he believes that a human-like robot named Sonny might have murdered him. Tudyk provided the voice and motion-capture for the robot, but not many people were aware of it at the time, as the actor was removed from the promotional rounds for the film.

On a recent episode of the podcast Toon'd In with Jim Cummings, Tudyk admitted he was "very upset" and "shocked" by the decision, as a lot of moviegoers ended up having no idea that he was behind the CGI character due to the lack of promotion, but those in charge believed it was necessary.

If an entirely new Harry Potter TV series wasn't enough, Audible will debut an ensemble cast audio dramatization of the beloved novels later this year.

The audio series follows in the footsteps of previous successful Audible dramas, such as 1984 and The Sandman, boasting a stellar cast with names such as Hugh Laurie as Albus Dumbledore, Matthew Macfadyen as Lord Voldemort, and Riz Ahmed as Professor Snape.

Another major casting sees Michelle Gomez take on the role of Hogwarts Professor Minerva McGonagall. Naturally, people have taken issue with yet another Harry Potter adaptation, and many have also thrown shade at the cast for taking part in an adaptation of J.K. Rowling's work.

In the case of Gomez, she quickly took to her Instagram Story (per Entertainment Weekly) to speak out against Rowling's anti-trans views.

Since the Fellow Travelers finale aired, fans have been eager to know if there will be a second season. While Showtime has not cancelled the show officially, the network has also maintained silence about its renewal. Although over a year has passed, there is no news regarding the series’ cancellation or its return for Season 2.

Showtime brought the historical romance drama to life in late 2023. Based on Thomas Mallon’s 2007 novel of the same name, the show followed the story of a closeted gay couple, the charismatic Hawkins and the submissive Timothy, spanning several decades, starting with the 1950s.

Soon after its release, Fellow Travelers became a hit with fans, especially those from the LGBTQ+ community. Viewers were impressed with the sensitivity with which creator Ron Nyswaner had depicted some of the most important events in queer history, from the Lavender Scare of the 1950s to the AIDS crisis of the 1980s.

In the past few years, I think most people can agree that there’s been some oversaturation in the realm of superhero media.

With the MCU releasing movie after movie and show after show, and the Dcu starting up again, the thought of keeping up with it all is very overwhelming.

I completely get it. I’m in the same boat. But hear me out: DC needs to get more into the TV show game. Marvel’s had its fun with TV shows; it’s time for DC to reenter TV shows again.

The Alan Tudyk-starrer Resident Alien has been canceled after four seasons. While the show had good ratings and received good responses from critics and audience alike, the makers announced that the fourth season would be its last. By your powers combined, Captain Planet is back. The iconic animated eco-hero of the 1990s is going to take pollution down to zero in live-action in a new Netflix TV series. The streamer won the rights to the project at a competitive auction. James Gunn’s Superman is getting rave reviews from critics and fans alike, and amidst a host of other reasons, the emphasis on comic-book authenticity seems to be one of the major ones. The narrative itself is inspired by iconic Superman titles like Superman: Birthright, Secret Identity, Secret Origins, All Star Superman, Superman For All Seasons, and Superman: The Animated Series, to name a few, which makes it obvious that direct plot references from the source material made their way into the movie. Also, as Superman has kick-started the Dcu, expansive world-building is already in progress. There are a number of Easter eggs and in-universe references that eagle-eyed fans might have spotted, or not—let’s see after I try to spot as many as I can.

The actor, author, producer, and all-around nice guy has recently reprised his role of Mike Barnes in the Karate Kid spin-off series, Cobra Kai. He’s also got a few productions in the pipe, one of which he revealed on social media.

On Instagram, Kanan shared a picture of a man holding a framed print of what looks like a magazine cover. It’s title is Film Noir with the sub-title, International Film Guide. It is rather common knowledge that comic-book adaptations tend to deviate from their source material to differing extents, and hardly any of them get to fully unlock the artistic potential confined within the original’s pages and panels. Back in 2022, when the first season of The Sandman was released, a lot of fans hailed it as one of the most faithful page-to-screen adaptations, although I couldn’t share that sentiment, as Netflix’s adaptation felt too saccharine compared to the raw, dark, tragic miasma pervading the original comic series. The sentimental undertone and desperate attempt to humanize omnipotent abstract beings are still present in the second season, but it does fare decently for the most part by successfully merging several different story arcs into a single narrative thread. However, due to the constraint of packing fifty issues into twelve episodes, there are some obvious omissions and alterations made, which I will try to highlight.

Max is a treasure trove for top-tier sci-fi TV shows.

The streamer is host to genuine sci-fi classics and ones with cult followings that deserve to be seen by more people. So if you’re looking for your next great binge, you could do a lot worse than these shows – whether you want something like “Rick and Morty” or a heavier option like “Station Eleven” or “The Leftovers.”

Below are seven great options for fans of the genre to sink their teeth into.

David Tennant in “Doctor Who.” (BBC Studios) Doctor Who

The modern age reboot of “Doctor Who” has offered up some of the most fun sci-fi in the last 20 years, bar none. Russell T. Davies and later Steven Moffatt each had their takes on what makes Who Who, but with powerhouse actors like David Tennant and Matt Smith holding the keys to the Tardis, it was going to be hard to completely miss.

Recent weeks have seen DC Studios co-ceo James Gunn provide some long-overdue updates about where things stand with the Dcu's Wonder Woman reboot.  

A script is being written, and the character appears to be a priority for the Superman director. We're likely still a long way off casting news given where things stand, but that doesn't mean we can't speculate about who should suit up as Diana Prince.

This is going to be a series for veteran actors and newcomers to the scene. Three new stars are joining the series, which is exciting for them to land a series on such a large platform.

Miranda, Paul, and Christopher will take on the roles of Flora, Penelope, and Justin respectively, and they are the children of Scott Foley’s character Malcolm.

Two episodes in, and Resident Alienis back to form in Season 4. Following a strong opening episode, the most recent second, "The Lonely Man," proved to be one of the best in the series so far, even becoming the highest-rated episode of the entire series on IMDb. However, there are still eight more episodes to come, with this fourth season's high quality hopefully ready to last the distance.

The Alan Tudyk-led sci-fi dramedy has created a small but dedicated fanbase by producing an innovative and immersive drama that blends sci-fi concepts with deeply human dilemmas. In doing so, the series has always produced incredibly high critics' and audience scores on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes. The first season impressed with a "certified fresh" 94% critics' score and a 92% audience rating, with Season 2 earning a perfect 100% from critics and just 74% from audiences, and the third season boasting a 92% audience score and no critics' score to date.

As David Harbour's canceled "Hellboy" sequel can attest, true longevity can be something of an anomaly when it comes to superhero movie series and TV shows. In fact, combine the usual behind-the-scenes shenanigans of the entertainment business with the wealth of superhero adaptations vying for attention (not to mention the relentless pressure from the fandom to get everything right), and it seems that an aspiring superhero franchise is far more likely to end abruptly like Netflix's "Jupiter's Legacy" than it is to reign supreme for decades á la the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Final Destination Bloodlines broke the world record for oldest person set on fire on camera, with 71-year-old stunt performer Yvette Ferguson coming out of retirement for the full-body burn.

“We lit so many different people on fire, including breaking the world record for oldest person on fire with Yvette Ferguson, who did that full body burn in the silver dress,” Zach Lipovsky, who co-directs with Adam Stein, told EW. “That was the oldest person ever on fire, on camera.”

The film’s stunt team reached out to Guinness World Records to officially submit the feat for consideration, but they have not yet heard back.

Ferguson plays Mrs. Fuller, who’s immolated in film’s 1960s-set opening sequence. Iris, a young woman on a date at a restaurant atop a 400-foot-tall tower, has a deadly promotion in which the crowded building collapses.

Team-up movies have always been the MCU’s forte, so it is little surprise that Thunderbolts—revolving around the titular team of antiheroes—has managed to bring the cinematic franchise back on track. As part of the show’s upcoming ninth season, actors Sullivan Jones, Darone Okolie and Walnette Marie Santiago have joined the cast of “Tyler Perry‘s Sistas,” it was announced on Thursday.

According to Deadline, the newcomers will appear in a recurring capacity with Okolie playing the role of Roc and Sullivan appearing as Dr. Vaughn, both of whom are set as love interests for the sistas. Meanwhile, Santiago will play the role of Nia.

If you want to go into Final Destination Bloodlines knowing as little as possible when it hits theaters on May 16, you may want to avoid reading any further.

In a new interview with SFX Magazine, Zach Lipovsky — who co-directs the sixth installment in the horror franchise with Adam Stein — teased a twist on the film’s opening premonition.

“For this film, the first premonition takes place in 1969,” Lipovsky revealed.

“There are lots of deaths during the premonition, which is what normally happens in the opening sequence of a Final Destination movie, but we then come out of the eye of a different person in the modern day. If you think I am about to rant about my favorite show, Ghosts, you are absolutely right. There’s a reason the series was renewed for two more seasons without anyone objecting.

The CBS show isn’t usually the kind of series with newsworthy episodic arcs.

Instead, Ghosts is more like a ninja, ensnaring viewers with brilliant comedy and genuine, heartfelt moments that blend seamlessly together. How diabolical.

Scott Derrickson returns to direct from a script he co-wrote with C. Robert Cargill. Joe Hill, author of the short story on which the 2021 film was based, executive produces.

Derrickson previously described the sequel to Bloody Disgusting as “a high school coming-of-age movie in the same way that the first one was a middle school coming-of-age movie.”

Reports out of CinemaCon suggest that “The Grabber goes full Freddy Krueger and is seeking revenge on the kids from the first movie from beyond the grave.”
