When British soldier Shaun Emery is accused of a crime he strenuously denies, newly promoted DI Rachel Carey is assigned to investigate.

After key evidence is mysteriously redacted from her investigation, Carey is forced to find other ways of pursuing Shaun, who is searching for answers of his own.

Shaun is interrogated by the CIA in a covert safe house, and while Rachel sees CCTV footage of him going in, she then finds she is unable to locate him inside. Her investigation leads her to make shocking discoveries about the degree to which CCTV footage might be manipulated. Finally released by his American captors, Shaun goes on the run from the police - but his quest to clear his name soon takes a devastating turn.

Rachel finally comes face to face with Shaun, who offers up the location of the CIA safe house before managing to evade arrest once more. The fugitive soldier flees into an encounter with two mysterious strangers, who offer to provide him with the answers he is looking for. Rachel pays Napier a visit, and the meeting leaves her more convinced than ever that the CCTV network has been compromised.

Neither Carey nor Shaun is prepared for what lies ahead, as the truth in all its complexity and ambiguity is revealed to them.

Secrets of the intelligence services are in danger of being exposed. Shaun's future, and the fate of our criminal justice system, lie with one person. Carey has a choice to make.
