‘The Son’ (2022) Movie Review: Not an action film
Image
The Sonis a drama movie written and directed by Florian Zeller, based on his own play.. Starring Hugh Jackman and Laura Dern.

Excellent acting in an “actor’s film”.

Storyline

A successful attorney, with a new wife and a baby, accepts taking care of his adolescent son from a previous marriage after his ex wife tells him she is worried about the boy´s random behavior.

Movie Review El Hijo (2022)

Excellent, well directed, good screenplay… one really had to have a bad day, a truly bad day to want to face two hours of skin deep feelings with the emotional problems of a son, worried parents and a drama that is great for actors to act in, but you will be wanting to be (truly) wanting to watch this.

Around here we usually say that we judge a movie, not the subject and we try to focus on the artistic virtues of the art,...

'Like a bullet from a gun': Laurie Kynaston on playing a tormented teen
He dresses like a New Romantic and played Johnny Marr and Danny Baker. Now the rising Welshman is taking on his most painful role yet

On my way to interview Laurie Kynaston, who is about to reprise his acclaimed performance as the tormented teenager Nicolas in the West End transfer of Florian Zeller’s The Son, I encounter the 25-year-old loitering in a doorway near the Duke of York’s theatre, where we have arranged to meet. “I got here early and I didn’t want to seem too keen,” he says, whipping off his sunglasses to reveal imploring brown eyes that could make Bambi look shifty.

His natty wardrobe choices this morning suggest a one-man Spandau Ballet revival: gleaming brogues and a billowing gold-patterned shirt tucked into pleated trousers and left partially unbuttoned, exposing a triangle of pale chest and a pendant. Once we are inside, he is keen...

The Purge Season 2 to Premiere on October 15th
"What happens on Purge Night doesn't stay on Purge Night." Ahead of its season 1 finale back in late 2018, USA Network renewed The Purge for a second season, and now we know when the first new episode will air. USA Network has announced that The Purge Season 2 will premeire on October 15th and 9/8c and they shared a brand new behind-the-scenes video, which we've included below.

Based on the hit movie franchise from Blumhouse Productions, The Purge revolves around a 12-hour period when all crime, including murder, is legal. Premiering this fall on USA Network, Season 2 will explore how a single Purge night affects the lives of four interconnected characters over the course of the ensuing year, all inevitably leading up to the next Purge.

Previously announced cast include Derek Luke (“13 Reasons Why”), Max Martini (“Pacific Rim”), Paola Nuñez (“The Son”) and Joel Allen (“Never Goin’ Back”).

Based on the hit movie franchise,...

Joaquín Furriel, Regina Lamm, and Martina Gusmán in O Filho Protegido (2019)
Sarajevo Film Review: ‘The Son’
Joaquín Furriel, Regina Lamm, and Martina Gusmán in O Filho Protegido (2019)
It is a mixed blessing to be born in the aftermath of a war. On the one hand, you never have to experience the terror and suffering your parents did; on the other, you grow up with your own personal crises forever made to feel smaller by comparison. That, at least, is the frustration driving Bosnian teenage tearaway Arman, the nominal hero of Ines Tanović’s strident, unvarnished family drama “The Son”: Raised in relative peace and privilege, he’s doing his level best to become his own center of conflict. Thoughtfully addressing generational difference and burdensome post-war expectations, this well-acted, straightforward Sarajevo fest opener will hit hardest emotionally with domestic audiences, but should match or exceed the extensive festival footprint of Tanović’s 2015 debut “Our Everyday Life.”

That film, a similarly snappish and locally flavored household study, was Bosnia’s selection for the international feature Oscar, and it...

Sarajevo Film Festival Builds Bridges Through Art
Mirsad Purivatra
Rising from the rubble of the Bosnian War to become one of Southeastern Europe’s leading film and TV industry events, the Sarajevo Film Festival has plenty to celebrate as it marks its 25th edition this year.

The festival was established in 1995 during the four-year siege of Sarajevo as part of an effort to help the reconstruction of society and save the cosmopolitan spirit of the city. Today Sarajevo not only plays a vital role for the region’s growing film and TV industries, it is also becoming an increasingly significant conduit to global partners in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas.

“From the very start, we have been inspired by art and it helped us create new values and break the existing social and cultural barriers,” Sarajevo Film Festival director Mirsad Purivatra says.

Indeed, Unesco is honoring the fest this year for its promotion of “dialogue and tolerance through the arts.

Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu, Pawel Pawlikowski Attend Sarajevo Film Festival Opening
Pawel Pawlikowski
Oscar-winning directors Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu and Pawel Pawlikowski both received Honorary Heart of Sarajevo Awards on Friday at the opening ceremony of the 25th edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival, Southeast Europe’s leading film showcase.

They were joined on the red carpet by the cast and crew of the opening film, “The Son,” led by director Ines Tanović, and Mexican production designer Eugenio Caballero, who won an Oscar for Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” and was Oscar nominated for Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma.” Caballero will open the 13th edition of Talents Sarajevo, and will deliver a lecture about his work.

A new red carpet was designed to mark the fest’s 25th anniversary. Its pattern is inspired by a traditional Sarajevo carpet dating back to 1930, held in the National Museum of Bosnia-Herzegovina, and represents “a symbiosis of modern and traditional design.”

Our new red carpet is ready Sarajevo mon amour!

Sarajevo 2019 industry preview: distribution distortions bring local opportunity
Industry head Jovan Marjanović on why its an exciting time for European production.

“It’s an exciting time to be involved in European film production” says Jovan Marjanović, head of industry at Sarajevo Film Festival, which begins its 25th edition tonight (Aug 16). “The traditional order has been distorted.”

Having worked at the festival for some 20 years, Marjanović has seen various dynamics come and go in the business. Most prominent now are the new opportunities offered to filmmakers in the Balkans by changing distribution models.

“We faced the power of the internet and rampant piracy a long time ago,” says Marjanović.

Joaquín Furriel, Regina Lamm, and Martina Gusmán in O Filho Protegido (2019)
Ines Tanović on Her Sarajevo Opening Film ‘The Son,’ and Her Next Project
Joaquín Furriel, Regina Lamm, and Martina Gusmán in O Filho Protegido (2019)
Bosnian filmmaker Ines Tanović returns to the Sarajevo Film Fest with this year’s opening film, “The Son.” Her second feature film continues the examination of family that began with her segment in the 2010 omnibus film “Some Other Stories,” about a young man at the end of the Bosnian war who returns to his native Sarajevo a refugee in his own city.

In 2015’s “Our Everyday Life,” which likewise premiered in Sarajevo, the story focuses on an older divorced and weary war veteran who has lost his ideals and finds himself trapped in the status quo.

Tanović continues the loose story arc in “The Son,” in which the older character, now a father, moves to the background as his son, and a new generation, become the focus of the story. The film examines the challenges of modern-day Sarajevo, a transitional society plagued by drugs, weapons and wrong values. Tanović spoke...

The Batman Wants Pierce Brosnan as Butler Alfred Pennyworth?
Before saying a single word otherwise, we want to start this out by saying the following can only, at best, be regarded as a rumor for the time being. Nothing more, so this should not be regarded even remotely official until other sources weigh in on the matter. That said, a tantalizing new rumor has cropped up suggesting James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan could (and again we stress could) be up for the role of Alfred in The Batman.

Amateur filmmaker Ryan Unicomb is the genesis of this whole thing. Admittedly, that's not a great place to start. However, certain rumors, specifically relating to The Batman, started out in a similar fashion and proved to be true. Case in point, Robert Pattinson's casting as Bruce Wayne was put forth by artist BossLogic long before the announcement was made. So it's not impossible to imagine, somehow, Unicomb stumbled across something.

Eurovision: Cast and Details on Will Ferrell Netflix Comedy
Nick Harley Joseph Baxter Aug 21, 2019

The former SNL star will lend his pipes for a Netflix feature based on the international singing competition, The Eurovision Song Contest.

Will Ferrell’s signing voice is like a combination Fergie and Jesus, which makes him the perfect choice to get involved in an international singing competition, like his character will be doing in the upcoming Netflix film, Eurovision.

Ferrell is heavily involved with Eurovision, having co-written the script with frequent collaborator Andrew Steele, and also serves as co-star and producer. The feature will be directed by David Dobkin.

The premise is based on the long running international TV music competition The Eurovision Song Contest. The contest, created in 1956, pits each participating nation from the European Broadcasting Union against one another, challenging them to write and perform an original song for a live TV and radio performance. Notable past winners include Sweden's Abba in...
