GOOD BUT COULD HAVE BEEN VERY GOOD

I found this a refreshing and riveting divergence from the many so called " Scandi/Nordic Noir " series , many of which, but not all , are very good viewing and some excellent viewing . This one departs from , what has become a boring storyline , of the Detective / Journalist / Lawyer returning to their hometown , for whatever reasons ( usually a funeral ) and becoming enveloped in some long dormant or fresh crime which requires them to prolong their visit . This is a completely different plot based more on Terrorist Crimes as opposed to the usual array of sexual deviant crimes and I couldnt wait to see the next episode . Despite some obvious and unbelievable scenarios and the Finnish Security/Intelligence Services being so under manned that the had to co-opt Rag , Tag and Bobtail from the Drugs Squad , it had the making of an excellent thriller but , trying not to give any spoilers in what is still a very watchable series , in my opinion it got clogged down in sentimentality and over did the " what makes people do this " excuses . Still a good watch but , for me , it became a bit of a let down as the " noir " became pink Rose's

A surprise from Finland.

Finland is a country that does not strictly belong to the Scandinavian nations mainly due to its peculiar language which doesn't share many common characteristics with Swedish or Danish, and secondly because of its cultural development that doesn't resemble the other Nordic countries. The same, of course, can be said about Iceland which also has its distinct cultural tradition. We nowadays tend to use the term Nordic when talking about the five countries: Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Iceland. Nevertheless, there are many Finnish contributions in the ever-evolving Nordic noir phenomenon and one of the brightest examples is Bullets . a 10-part TV show with a storyline full of potential and a cast of noted Finnish thespians.

Krista Kosonen ( Blade Runner 2049 , Beforeigners ) is the main protagonist of the series, playing Mari Saari, a secret service super-agent who mourns for the loss of her friend during a police operation that constitutes the show's first scene. Furthermore., there is Sibel Kekilli, the German actress of Turkish origin that we saw in the early seasons of Game of Thrones , who portrays Madina Taburova, a Chechen woman who became radicalized during the war with the Russians and now recruits young girls to take part in terrorist attacks throughout Europe. Tommi Korpela is the middle-aged police investigator who helps Mari with her work, a man having family troubles and a teenage daughter that doesn't seem to like him. We also have the opportunity to see a familiar face in the role of the villain/antagonist, Dragomir -"Gago"- Mrsic, the Yugoslavian actor that we first met in the Easy Money ( Snabba Cash ) trilogy, as the brutal henchman Mrado, and more recently in Viaplay's crime TV series, Alex .

The plot involves Mari working as an undercover agent in order to meet and befriend Taburova who is suspected to plan the next terrorist attack soon in the Finnish soil. Mari will pose as a social worker who becomes responsible for the Chechen immigrant Taburova and gradually she earns Madina's trust as she helps her deal with personal problems. Madina also has a tragic past which is revealed gradually, through the use of flashbacks, to the audience and has a daughter that she was forced to abandon in Chechnya, more than fifteen years ago.

Bullets is a TV show that features lots of action and plenty of times we admire Mari's skills in martial arts in fighting sequences. But, what this show strives for is to show how difficult is to judge its characters who are repeatedly making questionable, in terms of ethics and morality, decisions because of extreme circumstances. It is evident that the creators didn't want a Hollywood-style action show based on the dazzling special effects, but a series that would portray, as honestly as possible, the impossible dilemmas and extremist actions committed by certain people that we quickly label as "terrorists" ignoring their personal histories and life dramas. But did they succeed in Bullets?

I think that each viewer should answer truthfully to this question and if the response is positive, then the series should be considered as a success. I haven't heard anything about a second season being on production, but I think it would be interesting to see what a sequel season has in store for the main characters.

Good Nordic Noir series!

The show has quite an interesting plot with the usual characteristics of Nordic Noir shows, dark mood, gloomy weather, dark atmosphere, political issues and detectives with a disturbing and complicated past. Personally I liked it. Perhaps it is not as great as "The bridge", "Bordertown", "Deadwind" and "The Valhalla murders" but definitely worth watching.

Wanted to like it but kept falling asleep...but stayed till the end.

This started off pretty good for one or two episodes, and I really like these cold weather foreign language series and films, but then took a slow meandering turn for the worste. None of the characters really grabbed me although I like several of the actors and have seen them in other higher rated shows. Not much excitement or anything special happens in this show but it still made me stay, begrudgingly, till the end. If a season 2 happens I hope they narrow the plot lines and really juice up the mystery and action. I rated this a 6, watchable.

Good show

I found this tv show to be rather decent. It struck me as less superficial than is more common in a lot of the show plots used today. The culture seemed to be a little different than one might be accustomed to in the US, but I found it rather interesting to watch.

Sound recording should be better

It was hard to understand what actors were saying even I am Finnish. Next season should have Finnish subtitles that I can understand. Also music was too loud and disturbing.

Subtle but intense

This series uses complex characters well portrayed by the actors to carefully build suspense and tension. It's not a simplistic cops and baddies narrative. Well worth the journey with them.

Started promising but...

... the number if flaws and inconsistencies, specifically in the last two episodes, was disappointing. By the way: Russians talk Russian with each other.

A solid Finnish Noir

Mari Saari is an agent of the Finnish Intelligence Service who lost her partner during an operation where they followed a suspicious character. This character was also being followed by the local police drug squad. Soon afterwards Madina Taburova, a Chechen terrorist who was presumed dead, turns up in Finland and demands asylum. Mari must discover why she has resurfaced and why she picked Finland. This requires going undercover as a social worker at the asylum centre to befriend Madina. She must also work with drug squad officer Tommi Viita and his team because Madina was brought to Finland by people smugglers linked to the drug trade. Things are further complicated by a shadowy character dubbed 'The Ghost' who appears to be involved with Madina in some way.

I rather enjoyed this ten part Finnish series. Early scenes nicely introduce the key characters before the main story gets underway. Once things get properly started there are plenty of tense moments and a degree of mystery. The characters are mostly fairly typical of this sort of show; Mari is a bit of a mystery and like most TV cops seem to Tommi has problems with his marriage. Madina is a nicely ambiguous character; we know she has been involved in terrible things but her back story involves tragedy and she may be being coerced to do what she is doing. The cast is solid; with fine performances from Krista Kosonen, Sibel Kekilli and Tommi Korpela as Mari, Madina and Tommi respectively; Dragomir Mrsic is suitably menacing as 'The Ghost'. The winter setting adds to the series' atmosphere... as well as helping brighten night-time outdoors scenes. The ending wraps up most plot lines but some are left open; these leaves the possibility of a second season but after three years I wouldn't count on it. Overall I'd certainly recommend this to fans of the genre.

These comments are based on watching the series in Finnish with English subtitles. Much of the series is actually in English as it is used when characters, such as Madina, don't know Finnish; it is also used between non Finnish speakers even if in reality they would be speaking a third language.

Heroes or villains?

A slow disjointed script with too many unbelievable moments, with a mish-mash of characters, where even the "heroes" are flawed, and the villains evoke sympathy. Pretty obvious there'll be a Season 2 if they get financing, we won't be watching it. Regret watching all 10 episodes (45 minutes each), giving it 4 stars as it's just watchable if you're really really bored. Pretty bleak.

Too many plotholes

Maybe I was spoiled by watching All The Sins, another Finnish series which was really well done, but this is too plodding, full of plotholes and unresolved tracks. The whole thing could have been done in 90 minutes instead of ten episodes.

Very slow

Slow and boring series. After a few episodes i watched only the recaps at the beginning of the remaining episodes. Was still able to follow the story line. Proves how much filler was used to drag this series to 10 episodes. The ending was dull as well. Most of the cast were sleep walking through their respective roles...

Dull, Bleak, Slow, Aimless

Movie that moves along at a snails pace. Characters are bland made even more so by the acting and in the end you have no emotional attachment to anything other than hoping for a quick ending.

Mediocre at best

This TV show had potential. However, bad writing, directing and acting deserves only 4/10.

Mari Saari, is dull and borderline annoying character. There are plenty of good actors in the show, such as Tommi Korpela and Sibel Kekilli, but the poorly written dialogues and characters makes them very awkward.

Feels like this is a cheap copy of Arctic Circle TV show (Ivalo in Finnish).

Has decent production value, but things mentioned above makes it only worth watching if you are really bored and have nothing better to do.

Started well but ended up bad

First two episodes caught my interest but from the 3rd episode onwards has gone bad. Not sure what the story wants to tell. And the lead actresses are both so boring with the same stern facial expression all throughout.

Why 10 episodes?

Implausible story, too many loose ends, and a wooden lead actress. Music and tiles good.

Brings a whole new meaning to the word 'boring'

Starts off well but starts to drag and eventually slows to a snails pace.

However, the main problem I have with this is the 'problems at home' which is not only a distraction but tiresome, boring and quite frankly, unnecessary. The private lives of the characters slow the plot just when it needs to be intense and distract from the investigation, which, in any case, also drags like in a reactive rather than proactive way.

There are far better Finnish crime dramas around. Unfortunately this one is one to avoid unless you really want 10 episodes of something that could have been done better in 5.

Plotholes

Expressionless main characters.

Lots of moody moments.

Incredible plot leaps and coincidences and spun out over ten episodes.

Disappointing.

A real slow burner

Intriguing storyline but 2 episodes in and I am losing the will to live with the progress of the story. As the previous reviewer said, the whole thing could have been wrapped up in about 90 minutes.
