Sharp, stylish, and fun- a fresh breeze to Turkish Cinema "Olumlu Dunya" is Tarantino-Alaturca

If you live and breathe sarcasm, this is your movie.

Olumlu Dunya - "Mortal Life" is a movie about unusual characters gathered in somewhat unusual family that runs an ordinary Turkish diner, which sets the stage for a perfect situation-comedy.

Director and co-writer Ali Atay is know as Turkish Pioneer in comedy, he continues to deliver what he is known for while setting new horiozons for Turkish Cinema. He and his team write funny and irreverent dialogues and have a very in-your-face directing style that fits right in with the tone of the movie. The pace of the movie is constantly in overdrive, meaning that the viewer is always engaged.

If you take the wit and color, and combine it with the excessive violence and healty dose of sarcasm you end up with Mortal Life. I felt like watching a Tarantino-Alaturca. That's pretty high praise, and this is what the movie deserves.

When the credits roll, you haven't learned very much about the world or yourself, but you had a good time. Mortal Life is a light but out of ordinary movie, and a fun one without trying. If that's what you want, this is a movie for you.

CUTE AND ENJOYABLE

I expected more from this movie because everyone around me said "You must see this movie it is brilliant!" or something like that. Unfortunately I could just saw it. I dont say it is bad but it could be better even though this is second movie of Ali Atay as a director. Dialogues are awesome but sometimes they get so long. Movie has a great sense of humour and atmosphere. Also I loved the opening sequence. One of the problems movie has is cinematography, they fail at it. However jokes and sweetness can tolerate it. I really want to see more movies like that in Turkish cinema.

Ali Atay become real director now.

Ölümlü Dünya is his second film as a director but it was really different and stylish movie. He used different techniques that we are not familiar with in Turkish Cinema.Screenwriting and acting was real impressive. You can really laugh and enjoy while you watch the Ölümlü Dünya and i hope its sequel will be impressive at least as first one..

a different taste

A story we are not accustomed to in Turkish cinema, I think it is a very brave film language. Looking at the director's style, it certainly gives hope. Characters and dialogues are quite realistic in an exaggerated story. It's definitely a fun time to come. I think you meet what you expect from the cinema.

A total scenario blended with acting

Ölümlü Dünya or Mortal World is a movie trying to tell a story as using comedy elements about looks like ordinary family who served an ancient organization as serial killers, daily's life and how it changes quickly.

There is a settled though in Turkey if you watch a comedy movie, it must make you laugh almost all entire movie. I don't agree with those thoughts because I believed the movies which concentrate only one component (comedy) are impermanent because of filled with absurd comedy elements. So, if you are bored with such thoughts, the movie deserves a chance.

The movie is attracting the most attention in terms of directors Ali Atay and the Feyyaz Yigit member of writers. Ali Atay is a well-known actor in Turkey because of legendary Leyla and Mecnun TV series. Also, he took a part of different popular productions such as Innocent(Masum), Ayla etc. The Mortal World is his second film as director and he gets better every new movie. he keeps the audience inside of movie and doesn't let them get bored. Also, Feyyaz Yigit is a highly talented text writer and a natural-born comic person. Apparently, he has a mass influence on the scenario. Additionally, there is something need to say about other actors and actress', most of them consist of Turkey's young and talented performers, they tried to put all of their energy into the movie and it makes the movie dynamic. If you like wise and sharp humours, very likely you will enjoy the movie.

This dark comedy uses a little 'Leon', a little 'Goodfellas', a little 'Godfather' mix...

This movie is based on the family, but not the families you know. In a funny way, the dark and emotionless local shop owners start with the humorous dialogue of the "Mermer" family with each other. This dark comedy uses a little 'Leon', a little 'Goodfellas', a little 'Godfather' figures, colors and a little joke inside.

"Mermer" family is a family that will draw your attention. With the drama and the gangster comedy, i can say that the film is a wonderful mix. Turkey tries to new type of comedy thing for the moment. Let's see if a few years later the situation is to be realized, will it be seated on the market?

Different for Turkish cinema

Movie rhythm is very good. I can not understand how it's over. Though the duration is short. There is not a very impressive, very funny unforgettable scene in my mind. The general atmosphere is different and pleasant for Turkish cinema.

Ali Atay's understanding of satire is reflected quite effectively in every part of the movie.

Traditional tropes of Turkish comedy have been cast aside for a more unique style of comedy in which the Director, Ali Atay is famous for. It is a long and overdue wait for a movie that I can say is on the standards of foreign movie productions.

The action sequences, the dialogue and lack of in a certain scene were all placed in a timely manner to not be too overwhelming and long as to drag but in a manner to which the viewer is constantly engaged.

A truly Tarantino-esque movie, clever, fun, engaging, absurd and not too full of itself, a true movie. I will go as far as to say it is my favourite Turkish movie of its genre thus far and one of my movies overall.

Perfect

One of the best Turkish movies I've seen for a while!

Movie's quality is so good. Action scenes are more detailed and realistic than the most of the Turkish action movies . They didn't even skip the bullet marks that caught my attention.

If you are familiar with "Leyla ile Mecnun" you'll love this one!

Usual Turkish Comedy

Mortal World is actually funy job. Especially last decade, Turkish Comedies commit to people NOTHING. Mortal Life has seperated from the others. We can see a lot of funy quotes, dialogues and good acting.

However, the writer did not work enough for the script, I think. It's like, a lot of great catchphrases has written and events has written on them. Because of that, there are too many blanks in the script.

Fun but not worthy of the hype around it

I watched the movie to have a laugh and pass the time in the unbearable traffic of Istanbul. In my opinion, it is a popcorn absurd comedy movie that you can best watch on the bus or on the plane. While the movie had its good moments, it still wasn't funny enough to do justice to the rampant overhype surrounding it. The film popularized Feyyaz Yigid in society and paved the way for his own works such as 'Gibi'. Indeed, the most memorable and entertaining scenes of the movie belong to Feyyaz. The end of the movie is left open-ended with the hope of possibly making a sequel if it proves successful.

An Unfunny Fuss

I liked the first one-third of Ölümlü Dünya and its premise that it gave to the audience. But everything went down in a way so gradually in every following scene that, the two good things I could remember after watching the movie were Feyyaz Yigit's "My Father's" monologue and the "Get Down" scene.

In the core of the most of the problems in Ölümlü Dünya lies its dualistic structure. The film tries to be a satirical genre movie while doing the foot opposite and being incoherent most of its screen time; using artsy shots but continuing with an unprofessional angle in the following shot, doing some subtle satire but right after giving the characters exaggerated monologues that doesn't really lead to anywhere, placement of good music to unrelated scene transitions, actually writing good arcs and morals for the characters Serhan, Zafer, Serbest and Gazanfer while totally discarding the character values of every other main character, Meltem Kaplan's character being the most prominent one of these half-finished characters as she acts with a different moral every second that she is on the screen...

This duality extravaganza combined with the excessiveness in acting just brings the end of Ölümlü Dünya. Excessiveness is everywhere in this film; in acting, in monologues, in unrelated chase scenes... The over-the-shelf acting is actually this movies biggest sin. And when this sin of sub-par acting overlaps with the exaggerated monologues even the freshest comedy bits that this movie has becomes spoiled and every single scene turns into a chaotic free-for-all dialogue that all the characters try to take part in. This loop sadly reoccurs every fifteen minutes and after its third reoccurrance the movie just stops being funny and loses the originality that it had.

Ölümlü Dünya was a promising comedy flick that sadly turned rotten along the way and ended without fulfilling its premise. I wouldn't recommend anyone to waste their 107 minutes to this movie. If you're really craving for a "Snatch-like Turkish comedy" my recommendation would be the comedy classic called Kolpaçino (which I rated 7/10 even though the techical setbacks it had), as it was able to achieve something that this movie couldn't; make me laugh.

Perfect comedy in my opinion

I can't think of any other comedy movie that can match this masterpiece. Turkish humor at it's best. My rating opinion solely depends on how much I enjoyed the movie, and how much it made me laugh. I would love to see more work like this.
