New TNT Sports streaming service on the way
Image
TNT Sports will soon launch its own direct-to-consumer app, much like ESPN and Fox have done.

More and more programmers are taking their channels direct-to-consumer, as channel owners increasingly see the cable bundle as unsustainable. ESPN and Fox have both launched Dtc streaming services in the past month, and now a new one could be on the way to offer even more sports outside the cable bundle. The new streamer is on the way from TNT Sports, whose future top man, Gunnar Wiedenfels, teased that the Dtc product could be hitting the market soon on Wednesday.

Key Details: Under construction: Wiedenfels says the company is working on a new TNT Sports app.

Toronto: Brian Cox Trades Logan Roy’s Ruthless Boardroom for the Director’s Chair
Image
Forget the back-stabbing Roy family. For his first film as director, Succession star Brian Cox returns to his native Scotland with Glenrothan, a heartfelt story of reconciliation, whisky and the ties that bind.

Set in the rural highlands, the film follows two estranged brothers who reunite in the land of their birth. Donal (Alan Cumming) long ago left home for America, leaving older brother Sandy (Cox), behind to run the family distillery. Forty years later, the brothers finally re-unite, back on Scottish soil, to reopen old wounds and reconcile with their shared past.

Alongside Cumming and Cox, the cast includes Shirley Henderson and Siobhan Redmond. Glenrothan has its world premiere at TIFF. Protagonist Pictures is selling the film worldwide.

The project marks a departure for its two leads, who are playing far from their public personas. The Traitors host Cumming “butches it up a bit” as Donal, a rebellious, leather-jacket-wearing,...

Nicholas Hoult’s Casting as Voldemort: 4 Reasons Why Cillian Murphy Is Better Choice for Harry Potter TV Show
Image
As HBO quietly forges ahead with its ambitious Harry Potter TV reboot, industry rumors and insider hints confirm that the Dark Lord will appear across several episodes. However, the identity of the actor portraying He Who Must Not Be Named remains a mystery. Though Nicholas Hoult is strongly rumored to be in the shadows of this sinister role (per X), a growing legion of fans and film insiders agree: Cillian Murphy would have been a far more spellbinding choice.

Murphy’s glacial gaze, unnerving composure, and talent for conjuring dread in dead silence render him uniquely suited to portray the corrosive psyche and tragic unraveling of Tom Riddle. Hoult, though competent,...

Best Picture? Best Actress? Instant Oscar predictions for Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Bugonia’ starring Emma Stone
Image
Over the past decade, Yorgos Lanthimos has transformed from a "Greek Weird Wave" provocateur into one of the most decorated auteurs in Hollywood. With The Favourite and Poor Things already under his belt, Lanthimos is back in the Oscar conversation with Bugonia.

The satirical dark comedy, a remake of the 2003 South Korean cult film Save the Green Planet!, follows two conspiracy theorists (Jesse Plemons and Aidan Delbis) who kidnap a corporate CEO (Stone) they believe is an alien plotting humanity’s demise. Blending satire, sci-fi, and Lanthimos’ signature strangeness, Bugonia is already sparking debate over whether the Academy will embrace it as they did Poor Things — or find it too prickly for mainstream voters.

How Chris Evans, a Semi-Active Volcano and Donkeys Came Together to Make TIFF-Bound ‘Sacrifice’
Image
“Just to be clear,” says director Romain Gavras when discussing his new movie Sacrifice. “We didn’t actually throw anyone in a volcano.”

A disclosure like this may seem unnecessary, but for a film that was partially shot on location on the rim of a semi-active volcano, it is not entirely needless.

For Sacrifice, which is set to debut at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sept. 6, Gavras and producers traversed treacherous terrain — from mines in Northern Greece to the Cannes film market — to make an independent feature that really doesn’t look like one.

In Sacrifice, Gavras dissects myth-making in its many forms. The movie follows actor Mike Tyler (Chris Evans), who is attempting a comeback after a personal crisis and subsequent soul-searching. For his first public appearance, he attends a black-tie environmental charity gala thrown by a billionaire entrepreneur (Vincent Cassel) and his wife (Salma Hayek-Pinault). But it...

The trailer has a similar visual tone to Peaky Blinders, with a beige color tone, albeit it seems more cinematic than the Cillian Murphy-starrer. Knight has been tackling period dramas for quite some time now, with his latest Disney+ drama A Thousand Blows...

Succession’s Brian Cox Goes Full John Wick After His Dog Dies in 2008’s Most Underrated Thriller
Image
Years before Keanu Reeves made revenge-for-a-dead-dog movies mainstream with John Wick, Brian Cox delivered a powerhouse performance in the criminally underrated 2008 thriller Red, which follows an eerily similar premise. The film follows one man’s revenge after his beloved dog is shot to death, with Cox playing a reclusive man who sets out for justice and redemption when three teens kill his dog for no good reason.

Unlike the very choreographed action of John Wick, Cox’s revenge story unfolds as a slow-burn that showcases the Succession star’s dramatic range years before he became Logan Roy.

Critics praised Brian Cox’s performance, with Rotten Tomatoes giving the film a 71% approval rating based on 28 reviews.

Emma Stone Brings Yorgos Lanthimos’ ‘Funny and F**ked-Up’ ‘Bugonia’ to Venice — and If It’s an Oscar Movie, She Should Go Lead
Image
With “The Favourite” and “Poor Things,” Yorgos Lanthimos went from the Greek arthouse curiosity behind films like “Dogtooth” and “The Lobster” to a major Oscar player. His tart-tongued Queen Anne period piece “The Favourite” earned 10 Oscar nominations, winning for Best Actress Olivia Colman. With “Poor Things,” he again solidified a Best Actress winner with Emma Stone as a brain-transplant patient turned feminist, with three crafts wins in tow. The writing was on the walls for future success when Lanthimos and his screenwriting collaborator Efthimis Filippou earned a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for “The Lobster” in 2016.

“The Favourite,” “Poor Things,” and his nihilistic triptych “Kinds of Kindness” (which he shot as a diversion from the post-production rigors of “Poor Things”) were all set up at Searchlight; with “Bugonia,” he joins Focus Features for the first time.

His latest film and tenth feature, “Bugonia” premieres Thursday night in competition at the 82nd Venice Film Festival,...

HBO Max comes with a huge library of content, but if you don’t need autoplay, does the service let you adjust your settings?

HBO Max might be one of the top services to use autoplay with. That’s because not only does it have a host of HBO originals and other premium content in its catalog, it also carries a large selection of shows from cable channels owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, including Discovery, Food Network, HGTV, and more.

Viewers who are a little bit befuddled by all that content might want autoplay turned on. But if you’re confident enough to explore the HBO Max catalog without autoplay,...

‘Bugonia’ Review: Jesse Plemons Tries to Save the World from Emma Stone in Yorgos Lanthimos’ Blunt Big-Pharma Hostage Thriller
Image
Imagine if Michael Haneke’s “Funny Games” were instead about a pair of lone-wolf, conservationist vigilantes trying to save the world instead of two sociopathic twinks wanting to tear it down, and you’ll have some idea of the hyper-contained, rigorously controlled torture chamber that is Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Bugonia.”

Jesse Plemons stars as a galaxy-brained conspiracist beekeeper who’s either severely mentally ill or the only prophet among us, hijacking his cousin (Aidan Delbis) into a scheme to kidnap a big pharma executive (Emma Stone) whom he believes to be a body-snatched alien sent to end the planet.

Lanthimos works from an on-the-nose-for-the-now feature screenplay by “Succession” and “The Menu” writer Will Tracy, diverting from the droll theater of cruelty present in scripts by Efthimis Filippou (“Kinds of Kindness”) or the florid repartee of Tony McNamara. “Bugonia” has all the streak of Tracy’s kill-the-rich brand of satire, but with...

‘Bugonia’ Trailer: Emma Stone Is a Kidnapped CEO in Her Latest Film with Yorgos Lanthimos
Image
The greatest shaved female heads in cinema history are undoubtedly Renée Falconetti in “La Passion de Jeanne d’Arc” and Sigourney Weaver in “Alien 3.” Between those two poles of follicle-free cinema lie a universe of filmmaking — and a new entry is about to enter its ranks: Yorgos Lanthimos’s “Bugonia,” which just released its official trailer timed to its Venice debut (it had already shown footage at CinemaCon).

“Bugonia” stars the director’s now-repeat collaborator Emma Stone as a corporate CEO living the life: power suits, indoor pools, Time and Forbes covers. The only annoyance in her life is making sure she nails the bit of corporate jargon she’s supposed to make sound natural in a video shoot. Then she’s kidnapped, her head shaved by her abductors, and she’s told her hair “has been destroyed” to prevent her from using it to contact her mothership.

Ah.

Yorgos Lanthimos & Emma Stone On How Their “Funny And F*cked Up” Venice Title ‘Bugonia’ Reflects The Current World Climate

Greek filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos is back in the Venice Competition with his latest feature, Bugonia, which once again stars his frequent collaborator Emma Stone.

The last time Lanthimos and Stone collaborated on a Venice competition title, it was Poor Things, based on the novel by Alasdair Gray, which won the Golden Lion alongside four Oscars and two Golden Globes.

“I love working with Yorgos. I love the material that he’s drawn to and the worlds he wants to explore, and the characters that he’s been generous enough to let me try my hand at,” Stone said of her collaboration with Lanthimos.

“With the exception of Will, we have all worked with Yorgos multiple times. So what it ends up feeling like is a really comforting and safe environment to explore and feel as free as possible. I know everybody says it’s ‘like we’re a family,’ but...

Want to win an Emmy? Here’s the one month you absolutely can’t launch your show
Image
Spring or summer? Fall or winter? When is the optimal time to launch a show if you're in the hunt for some Emmys? And which month should you stay away from at all costs?

In the crowded landscape of Peak TV, getting a series noticed by the Television Academy is perhaps the biggest obstacle for an awards campaign. The presumption might be to premiere a project in the spring months of March, April, or May to stay top of mind and be one of the last shows voters see before the May 31 eligibility deadline. But is that actually the case? Gold Derby analyzed the past decade of Emmy-winning comedies, dramas,...

The 15 Best TV Shows That Never Won An Emmy
Image
The Emmys, when compared with the Oscars and Golden Globes, are the most predictable of the screen media awards. If you watch the Emmys long enough, you become familiar with the Television Academy's game.

It's as simple as this: They choose a handful of shows they like, and make them sweep their genre categories, sometimes multiple years in a row. Notable examples of this phenomenon include "Game of Thrones," "Succession," and "The Bear." How many times did "RuPaul's Drag Race" win Outstanding Reality Competition Program despite middling seasons? If a show was good once, the Academy will lazily default to awarding the show consistently instead of critically assessing the quality of individual seasons.

Highly anticipated 'Task' arrives on HBO and HBO Max next month
Image
Mark Ruffalo leads a task force chasing violent home invaders in this new seven-episode crime drama.

Image via HBO Max trailer

I’m still not over “Mare of Easttown” — it has one of the best drunk-acting scenes I’ve ever seen and an ending so shocking I just sat there, disoriented and kind of thrilled. So, when I heard creator Brad Ingelsby was back with a new HBO series, I was all in. “Task” looks like another gritty, emotionally messy crime drama set in suburban Philly, but this time we’ve got Mark Ruffalo leading a task force and Tom Pelphrey pulling off a string of violent home invasions. Last week,...

Doctor Who Producer Dismisses the Show's Diverse Casting as a 'Bold Step'
Image
Doctor Who has gone through several different castings since its relaunch in 2005, and now one of the show's producers who helped bring the series back to television has spoken out about how things have changed in recent years, specifically with the casting of Jodie Whittaker and Ncuti Gatwa.

Speaking with King's College London's InTouch, award-winning TV producer Jane Tranter discussed her career, which includes Doctor Who and Succession. She specifically talked about the groundbreaking sci-fi series' ability to handle sensitive subject matter, along with her thoughts about recent years introducing more diverse casting to its lead role, which was historically played by white, male actors.

"I like the fact...

Doctor Who Producer Defends Diverse Casting: "It's Normal"
Image
Doctor Who has always been a boundary-pushing show, but one of the series producers has opened up about not thinking certain casting choices were actually innovative. In July 2017, Jodie Whittaker was announced as the Thirteenth Doctor, making her the first woman to play the beloved role. There was controversy surrounding her casting, with some people unhappy with the fact that the Doctor morphs genders.

In May 2022, it was revealed thatDoctor Who chose Ncuti Gatwa to portray the Fifteenth Doctor, making him the first person of color and openly queer individual to do so. There were people who criticized the casting choice as a stunt in order to seem "woke." Whittaker...

Inside Track: Is there real ‘Pitt’-mentum in the final days of voting?
Image
This is the end... of the first week of final Emmy voting. TV Academy members — those that aren't already on vacation anyway — have until Wednesday, Aug. 27 to fill out their ballots before settling in for that long Labor Day weekend rest. Meanwhile, most of the major Emmy races have been equally sleepy, at least on the Gold Derby leaderboards. The Studio hasn't budged from its top spot in the Best Comedy Series race and Adolescence retains its lock on Best Limited Series.

The one area where there's some drama happening is, appropriately enough, among the Drama Series races. Even as Severance holds onto the No. 1 spot in our predictions — and...

‘The Pitt’ would be the first show to win Best Drama Series since ’24’ with a season longer than 13 episodes
Image
As one of the biggest risers in the Emmy odds, The Pitt has the opportunity to accomplish something that has not been done in almost 20 years: winning Best Drama Series with a season longer than 13 episodes. The last time this was achieved was by 24 in 2006. The Fox action serial starring Emmy winner Kiefer Sutherland produced 24 episodes per season as it chronicled a single day. It was also the last time a broadcast-network series won Best Drama.

The Pitt is only the second series in a decade to be nominated in the top category for an elongated season, after This Is Us, with 15 installments. Before that time, broadcast networks dominated the category.

How Many Emmys Should ‘Severance’ Actually Win This Year?
Image
This article could’ve just as easily been focused on “The Pitt.”

Despite the Max original series earning less than half the total nominations of “Severance” (and only the fifth most of any drama series), many prognosticators believe “The Pitt” has a legitimate shot at winning Best Drama Series, along with a handful of other trophies on Emmy night. Over at IndieWire’s sister site, Gold Derby, there’s a nearly even split among experts, with “Severance” clinging to a narrow 11-8 lead.

Working in “The Pitt’s” favor: the critics, who are absolutely rabid for a throwback medical drama consisting of a hefty 15 hourlong episodes; nostalgia, which should hook a few older voters who remember when the Emmys still regularly honored broadcast-style dramas; the “made in L.A.” narrative, which has been getting a lot of press coverage this season, as anxious Hollywood residents rally around productions that help...

Be wary, ‘The Pitt’ and ‘The Studio’: The Television Critics Association only agrees with the Emmys about half the time
Image
The Television Critics Association has been doling out prizes for over 40 years now, with its first awards show in 1985 honoring The Jewel in the Crown and The Cosby Show. Fast-forward to this week, and the 2025 winners consist of The Pitt and The Studio (one win for Best Comedy Series). Since the TCA's champions are announced prior to the Emmys every year, and cover the same June 1-May 31 eligibility period, awards prognosticators often look to the organization as a pivotal bellwether on the campaign trail.

But that might be a fool's errand.

Over the past 25 years, the TCA Awards and the Emmys have only agreed 40 percent of the time for Best Comedy Series,...

HBO surprises by releasing trailer for new season of 'The Pitt'
Image
The popular medical drama series is coming back far sooner than many fans anticipated.

Traditional production schedule? Pshaw to that, says HBO Max, at least when it comes to the new season of “The Pitt.” The medical drama series set in an overworked Pittsburgh hospital just wrapped its first season in April, and such shows nearly always take at least a year to craft a second season — especially on HBO, where the high production values usually demand an extended schedule. But as announced on Thursday, HBO will bring back “The Pitt” for a second season far earlier than most would expect.

Key Details: Happy New Year!: “The Pitt” Season...

'Death by Lightning' Strikes Michael Shannon and Matthew Macfadyen in New Look at Netflix's Next Historical Drama
Image
We finally know when Death by Lightning, Netflix's new depiction of the strangest Presidential assassination in American history, will strike. The historical drama miniseries starring Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water) as President James A. Garfield and Matthew Macfadyen (Succession) as his killer, Charles Guiteau, will premiere on November 6. The streamer also unveiled the first poster for the series.

The poster features a stylized rendition of the July 2, 1881, assassination of Garfield at the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad Station in Washington, DC. The pistol-wielding Guiteau lurks behind the stripes of the American flag, leveling his weapon at the unsuspecting Garfield. Garfield, meanwhile, as the title implies, has been "struck by...
