This show is fantastic. The 1970's Monkey was a cult classic in Australia. I can quote you entire scenes from any epsiode, if i needed to prove how much this show was integral in Australia for 80's and 90's kids.
It possesses the best while being fresh: the humour. Brilliantly Aussie/Kiwi. The accents. Gloriously home. The characters, compelling and FUN. I have laughed so much. The friendships here are wonderfully true to the 1970's Monkey. Pigsy is also much more loveable lol.
Also, it is wonderfully multicultural. It is great to see something that was huge in our youth, shown with real aussies, our humour, and our mix of ethnicities and cultures.
I think that haters are for the most parr, missing the element that makes us us down here. The story journey to the west wasnt the source, the 1978 version of Monkey, and how we took it to heart. I suppose it might be a bit of an inside joke to non-aussies.
This show doesnt rewrite our loved childhood show. It is a tribute to it.
However, to be fair to those who pan this show, this does seem like a case of one of those rare, extremely good fanfictions. We could have this story, 98% or more the same as it is, and say "inspired by" instead of "Monkey."
Absolutely adore this series. Have watched through so many times. The writing is fun and capable. True to the heart.
