A must watch if you love classic price of art!!

Something real .. something which shows the reality about certain lives and makes u see what innocence means through the lens . Grt piece of work . I hope the director would make more art films like this. A film which doesn't just show a Bollywood filmy love story , but it shows the brutality of the poor and still they live among us and we never notice them or what they go through or how different their lives are from us . The most innocent form of love and the family drama.

You marry not only your spouse but spouse's family as well

What worked:
  • realistic and simple screenplay and the dialogues
  • authentic naturalistic setting, mood and characters development. The movie was a treat especially the ending five minutes has one of the best scenes in Hindi cinema in terms of cinematography.
What did not work: -maybe it's true but the scenes where the main character being exploited constantly which driving auto-rickshaw in the movie felt cliche and repetitive although the theme of the movie was conveyed through those scenes as well. Final verdict: Recommended; I was pleasantly surprised

Chronicles of a Autowala !!

If u are a fan of parallel cinema, Love and Shukla will tick most of your boxes. The subtle life story of an "Unimportant" autowala is presented in a rather beautiful manner. Stories around Mumbai's woefully inadequate spaces are not uncommon on screen, yet Love and Shukla sets out to tell a realistic tale, that steps out of the confined space of a room in a chawl to capture the claustrophobia of life for the poor and underprivileged.

Terrific cinematography & direction by Jatla Siddhartha sets the tone and paints a vibrant picture in audience's hearts. Editing, production design, music, costumes & makeup were all apt & subtly used in a perfectly toned down manner for good effect. Saharsh Kumar Shukla delivers a mature, delicate and a memorable performance, ably supported by all the supporting actors.

Overall, a good watch for parallel cinema audiences as the film is full of tight frames that enhance the frustration and suffocation of the characters. Not recommended for mainstream SRK and Salman Khan audiences.

Underrated Movie. A Bollywood Gem

Karan johar should learn the screenplay and dialogue writing from this movie. It was an amazing treat to my eye. The person played hero father done a fantastic job by speaking with his eyes only. Commendable job by the girl who played wife role. Must Must watch. Loved it.

Lets talk about this neverending problems of lower class ! In our life.

This film need support , not because it talk about issues in our society. But it talk about the most unspoken issue of a lower class urban family , which they cant do it in their lifetime and make their life full of missery never communicated positively. And a big mass of our society live in this portion of our country.

A lesson for typical bollywood movies

Acting - 101% Story - 101%

Such a brilliant stuff, entire cast and director deserve huge round of applause. Out of words for this beauty i had never written a review fo any movie but this one vow me to write few words for the film. Please make more movies like this which actually depicting our society instead of typical love stories.

Boring and contrived

For a movie with a predictable storyline like this, the least the moviemakers could have done is to make it less boring. Looks like our audience ends up appreciating this just because it has some artsy elements, and we have some kind of obligation to support such low budget, small banner movies.

The background score simply doesn't match the content sometimes. It has this melancholic feel, which doesn't really fit with this subject which really is light hearted, or atleast should have been so. And perhaps here lies the biggest confusion this movie has at its core. Did it really want to portray the mosaic of life in Mumbai, especially that of an auto driver? Or simply wanted to tell this light hearted story?

Acting is quite pedestrian too. The huge theatre hangover is obvious on all the actors. Maybe they should have gotten some training on acting for the movies before jumping into this.

Even the excellent cinematography couldn't save this one. That's a real pity.

Touching universal story

Understated and nuanced acting and directing. Honest portrayal of the hard times and resilience of the protagonist. Highly recommended

Life unknown is more attractive than ever

After spending your whole life from toddler time to grown up person sometime you might ask yourself whether there is any story the movie entertainment industry has not told you ( or try to tell you). If you are that curious person and you are not afraid to make a click and be involved in a journey , the different journey you have not had before, Love and a Shukla is for you, specially made for you! And me too! You will have chance to see your characters were shot in the narrowest angle it could be. Their days and nights come and go, passing by in the tinies cubicle as it could be. But their life , their dream, the drama, happy moments stretch your heart and your nerve on a longest roller coaster you have ever been. It sucks you in as though you are their neighbors , witnessing all of the reality of Shukla and his clan. It's so real, so raw, so radiant ! And it's restless and rebellious too! Shukla will be your hero in his quiet way because withthe warm heart and good will he change all the cliche to move the odds of life (for you) and make your dream come true in a true way that you believe it ( not a make believe in many others Bollywood you watch before )!

Jatla Siddartha and his team pour out their heart to make this movie that you can feel every pulse in every frame he shot or every line of the script or every tactic of craft of acting that Saharsh Kumar Shukla led the whole cast rolling in a smooth ensemble! They deserve the click and the clap ... from all of us... for their bravery , passion, and sacrifice for ART!

Horrid acting

2 characters in the movie have made it impossible to take it seriously. You feel like they are auditioning for the role and not really acting in the movie. The actress playing the protagonist's mother is always screaming and delivering scenes as if it is theatre, no subtlety here, hardly any change in facial expressions. The dialogues between the sister and the mother are fraught with cringe worthy pauses which make it look like a kindergarten drama class. Some scenes look exaggerated, such as the cop scene or the protagonist's repeated brushes with awful customers. Some movies are hidden gems, this one sadly, is a blot on indie cinema.

Simple beautiful decent practical movie

I normally don't add a review but see lots of movies in all segments. I found this movie really great, simple decent, no songs, no sex, no violence as such, no fights etc but still a great movie. To make a movie without masala is really difficult. Like that stupid actors of these days. You really require courage to make these types of movies & make it happen & successful. I really honor the director & actor & the full team to make this happen. Best Congratulations.

An unpolished artsy film

The film revolves around an auto driver who gets beaten up or conned by every second customer, his newly wed wife and family.

The movie got some scenes here and there that goes well for the story. But rest of the cellulose is a choppy, unpolished mess.

The main lead is the only actor who seems to know what he's doing in front of camera but the rest, specially the mother( who just yells and cries over the top of her lungs) is stupidly caricaturish for a movie that is going for realism. The sister who plays damsel in distress, didn't seem like a real person.

The audio mixing, background score and editing is awful, which pulls you out of the scene. The direction was poor, the director clearly didn't know what he wanted to do with the story, it derails at moments and takes a side track when intense emotional scenes could have been brewed.

At times I felt this movie was made by rich snobs who wanted to romanticise the misery of poor people, but they don't seem to get a grasp of their lives.

It's okay for a one time watch but there is a sea of films to choose from so don't even bother with this.

Superb- An deep insight into Urban poverty

Straight up, please watch Love Aur Shukla on Netflix. What a well made film! So many layers deftly woven in with privacy in urban settlements being the central premise. It is the story of a newly wedded auto rickshaw driver who comes to terms with the reality of the space issue in his cramped up little one room home in a chawl. As he struggles to build a relationship with his immensely naive and shy wife, this reality hits him hard. Juxtapose that with rich layers of caste, class, power and everyday other oddities intersecting into the narrative; you'll get claustrophobic too. That reality will hit you hard too. Well, as someone who immensely values her own space, actively seeks it, his struggle made me claustrophobic. . Saharsh Shukla is brilliant actor and his Shukla is so endearing. He may not be intelligent or exceedingly handsome, but his heart, it'll win you over. And Thank goodness that the character is not crafted as per the prevailing all-men-are-evil standards. He's attempting to build a relationship despite everything that goes against him, even when he's antagonised, even when he is humiliated. There's this scene in the movie where Shukla takes his wife to a hotel to get some time with her. All that he wants to do is communicate with her. His time is interrupted by a cop, who refuses to believe that a husband would pay a sum to spend time with his wife in a hotel. The cop goes on to hit him and humiliate him before his wife. That scene will break your heart. Because it is true. Because no one would do that if two "decent" looking people check into any hotel, married or not; all morality aside. . In his essay, Hindustani Sanat E Filmsaazi par ek nazar, Manto says that films are an efficient way to communicate a message to people, even it is a complex one. He writes that we need films that entertain us; that teach us new ways of thinking; that open the pages of humanity before us and not those that make us forget. Love Aur Shukla does that. Ofcourse, there's plentiful movies that have successfully done that. It makes you conscious of your privilege. It makes you re-examine your privilege at so many levels. It made me think of all those people who steal moments at malls, at seafronts, at parks; because that's what they steal out of cramped lives. Because privacy too is a privilege. If it matters, it'll leave you with a smile, with that glint of hope that one should never let go of. Shukla is smiling all the way, no matter what. Whether it is resilience or means of survival, it is.

Universal themes in multigenerational family life explored in indie film gem.

A marriage getting its start with limited resources and obtuse extended family members is a universal function of the passing from one phase of life to another.

Ego, pride, self esteem, and finding separate space both physically and emotionally in housing scarce locations throughout the world is something many families must move through frequently. This a sweet, yet starkly realistic portrayal of becoming both one and many. In the end, Shukla's family is better than before and his marriage finds its own space to begin to grow.

Despite the over reliance on some stock footage, both the photography and the editing is excellent for a true independent film. Though obviously intended for an Indian audience, accessibility to other audiences worldwide might be assisted by some explanation of the actual location, Mumbai, for those who otherwise may not immediately identify the city visually.

Nevertheless, Love and Shukla is exceptionally well crafted and despite the opening dialogue with mature audience themes, it is a delightful, redeeming and hope giving film.
