Raghuvaran (Dhanush) wins the Engineer of the Year Award working for Anitha Constructions and is an executive now with a parking space. Anitha (Ritu Varma), the firm's owner, is a humble person who treats her employees well. Vasundhara constructions is the clear winner, taking all the awards at the ceremony, but Raghu spoils their day by winning the Engineer of the Year award for Anitha's company. Vasudhara prides herself on recruiting the best talent in the market.

Raghuvaran efficiently completes construction projects assigned to him, with the help of about 200 unemployed young civil, mechanical and electrical engineers, who are his friends. This way Raghu keeps the costs of the project low. His most recent win was a slum rehabilitation project which was the first of its kind in the industry.

His wife Shalini (Amala Paul) becomes an authoritative, nagging wife who controls him. She has resigned from her job to take care of the household, after marriage. Raghuvaran is also dismissive about his wife getting a job. Raghu lives with his brother Karthik (Hrishikesh), father (Samuthirakani) and late mother Bhuvana (Saranya Ponvannan). Raghu lives next door to his in-laws and hates their constant interference in his married life.

Vasundhara (Kajol) an arrogant chairman of a big construction company in South India, witnesses the announcement of Raghuvaran's victory at the Engineer of the Year 2016 Awards and finds out about him. Vasundhara makes Raghuvaran a job offer, but he humbly refuses. Vasudhara calls Raghu to her office, and hands him an offer letter in a very rude manner. After working for Anitha, the contrast is clear that Vasundhara is a hard task master and doesn't have much of a people side.

Later, Raghuvaran's project team and Vasundhara's top team are invited at the same time to exhibit their models for a proposed private medical college and hospital building to a very rich and native trader. Vasundhara exhibits her project with heavy pride and ego, while Raghuvaran explains his project in a simple manner. The trader gives the project to Anitha Constructions and the project is worth Rs 600 Crores. Raghuvaran provides some polite advice to Vasundhara outside the building.

Vasundhara is furious. First, she uses her influence in the state cabinet to force the trader to give the project back to her. She offers Rs 50-100 Crore in election funding to persuade the minister to make the phone call to the trader. The minister threatens to convert company land into government property to get the company chairman to change his decision.

One by one Vasundhara steals all of Anitha constructions projects by outbidding Anitha by a 30 Crore margin, even taking a loss in many projects. Ramkumar, Anitha's father (M. J. Shriram), meets Vasundhara personally to discuss why she is bent on destroying their small company. Vasundhara gives him 2 options, to dismiss Raghu or ask him to work for Vasundhara's firm. Ramkumar refuses to fire Raghu, but Raghu decides to resign on his own to save Anitha Constructions.

Vasundhara is furious that Raghu still won't beg for a job with her, despite him being unemployed and being rejected for work everywhere. Anitha encourages Raghu to start his own firm with his other unemployed engineering grads. This was always a lifelong dream of Raghu. He is approached by the son of a Delhi-based construction mogul who saw him being awarded for the best engineer, with the idea of starting a new construction company with 50-50 shares. Raghuvaran agrees by putting his house under a mortgage of five million rupees and starts "VIP" Constructions with the 200 unemployed engineers as the company's employees.

Raghu and his friends are desperate for their first project. Thats when they get a call from Prakash, who offers their company their first assignment. They don't know that villainous person, Prakash (Saravana Subbaiah), is a greedy businessman who wants to build a theme park in a marshy land. This would mean the project cost would go up 10 times and if in case of heavy rain, this area would be the first to be flooded.

Raghu refuses to do the project, so Prakash assigns the project to Vasundhara and spreads the rumor that Raghu is angry that the project was assigned to Vasundhara. So, Vasundhara refuses to meet Raghu when he only wants to inform her about the inherent risks in the project. To gain attention Raghu sits with his entire company on the construction land and stops Vasundhara from doing any work on the land site.

He also calls in the media and tells his story on how the land is marshy and should not be used for theme park construction. Vasundhara watches this on TV. Social media picks up the story and it goes viral. The PWD minister has to resign and the civil servant who passed the plans is sacked. There are 100's of cases filed against Prakash all over India.

Vasundhara construction has a massive loss of reputation and clients start canceling their projects with her. Vasudhara is angry at Raghu again. She gets Raghu's office ransacked. Raghu & his business partner run short of funds and thus they have to sell 75% of the company to tide over the crisis. Vasundhara buys all the shares and fires Raghu from his own company. But Raghu's entire staff walks out with him, leaving Vasundhara with an empty victory.

That night, Prakash sends goons to kill Raghuvaran, but Raghuvaran beats them all up. He thinks that Vasundhara sent them and goes to her office room in her company's main headquarters building. Vasundhara is alone in the building, as she is currently thinking about the loyalty of all the employees of VIP Constructions towards Raghuvaran. Raghuvaran initially berates, then advises Vasundhara, and starts to leave.

Raghu gets stuck there due to very heavy rain due to which the entire city flooded, and Vasundhara's building's first floor is under water, so Raghu can't go out. They then cooperate to find biscuits and wine on the top floor.

After a deep conversation, Vasundhara undergoes a change of heart. As the rain stops, Raghuvaran takes Vasundhara to his home, where they share a meal and Vasundhara bonds with the family. She announces that she will return VIP Constructions to Raghuvaran. Raghuvaran declares that people consider him a villain but he, in fact, is a hero.
