Black Lake

This is a fantastic movie with exceptional cinematography and stunning music selections...but its going to require you to pay attention, think and use your feelings. Imagery in this movie is everything. Metaphors abound. If you're looking for flash and glitz and pew pew pew and zoom zoomie cars, this won't be your movie. But if you don't mind a deep cultural dive and maybe a little homework to learn what's going on, this will be very much worth your time.

If you watch this movie and think nothing is happening you aren't paying close attention. Or nowhere near close enough attention.

It's subtle, there is the significance of the element of water, spirits and possession...possession of possessions, various fears from not knowing what's going on, bad dreams, are you dreaming or are you awake, after effects of violence, something getting inside you and taking over...so much happens!! There are more levels to horror than a maniac randomly killing random people having premarital sex and the gore of rubber intestines falling with a splat to the floor. A big modern social commentary that will slap you in the face if you're willing to listen...and that's more horrific.

Wow was this harsh or what?!? I have to say: the intro of the movie blew me away a little and indeed got my hopes high. I was ready to see a cool horror, perhaps a tad bit artsy fartsy with one great soundtrack. Only problem was, that intro was the movie, the intro could have been used as the trailer and you would have not known the difference.

Every few minutes..and I mean few minutes, as in 3-4, a new song starts playing, some slow motion scenes, all the symbolism one could imagine and then we have another 3-4 minutes windows where pretty much nothing happens. This is such a roller coaster of the same thing happening over and over again, it was truly difficult to watch it all the way. At about the 60% mark of the movie something does happen, in the same pattern it did till then, and you're stuck there, going through it again and again, knowing that whatever happens next, it will have the exact formula.

Black Lake was a hard experience for me, one that I would not recommend to anyone. There are some ambiguous horrors out there indeed, but this one, it gave away nothing, relying on...what exactly? I truly have no good things to say about it, excepting the intro. That is all, watch that and then skip the rest.

This is a must for discerning horror fans who want a horror that packs a punch with flavours from the subcontinent. Great cinematography and a vision which delivers a an eerie experience. The score is fabulously haunting. Check this out. The mythology around the churail is fascinating and chilling.

Seriously ? All you see is the main character walking around the house and having breakfast. Then walking around the house more. Then walking around outside her house. That's it. Where was the horror?

Each scene is like some sort of performance art. Focusing on details, and loud music to accompany... many will not appreciate the art. I can imagine this would be magnificent on a big screen.

This is a thriller, with some horror. Those who like big scares and frights will be sorely disappointed, and will call it "slow".
