- Buried secrets of an 1870s Montana town spark violence when a young man returns to reclaim his legacy and is caught between a sheriff determined to maintain order and a mysterious stranger hell-bent on destroying it.
- In the rugged frontier town of Trinity, Montana, where Henry Broadway witnesses his father, Isaac, being hanged. Isaac vehemently claims innocence, insisting he was framed by a corrupt sheriff. Henry, a gullible son estranged from his father, readily believes him and sets out to fulfill Isaac's dying wish: clear his name and deliver justice.
Upon arriving in Trinity, Henry confronts the current sheriff, Gabriel Dove. Gabriel, however, gently informs Henry that the sheriff he seeks, Saul, is already dead. He tries to explain that the town viewed Isaac as a villain and Saul as a hero, warning Henry that challenging Saul's legacy would only cause trouble. Despite this, Henry's pursuit of vengeance inadvertently ignites a series of violent and somewhat repetitive events.
The escalating conflict includes a deadly shootout at a pub, where a woman's death leads to Henry becoming a target himself. Further complications arise when St. Christopher, a priest and ex-slave, reveals Isaac's past misdeeds. Isaac had stolen a significant amount of gold from the South and double-crossed Christopher, who is still seeking his promised share.
Gabriel confirms that the hunt for the gold is resurfacing, informing Henry that his own house was once Isaac's and has been unsuccessfully searched for the treasure before. Christopher then rallies the townsfolk, leading them to Gabriel's house, where Henry is being sheltered. This sets off numerous scuffles, shootouts, and violent confrontations, filled with accusations and revelations from both sides.
The brutal clash culminates in a final confrontation at the church between Gabriel, Henry, and Christopher. The gold-theft plot comes to a head as Christopher, though outnumbered, fiercely demands his share for closure. Despite Henry's willingness to forgive, Gabriel ultimately shoots Christopher dead.
In the end, a transformed and softened Henry disperses his father's ashes. Ready to leave Trinity, he acknowledges his rightful inheritance of Isaac's house but chooses to let Gabriel keep it, recognizing the life Gabriel has built there with his family. Gabriel, however, insists that Henry stay and gives him a Sheriff's badge.
