Night of the Slasher

The short film market is as flooded as never before, and while there are many, many good, and even great ones, most of them to be enjoyed at film festivals, it's often rare to see something truly unique, something that will wow most viewers with originality. Night of the Slasher follows a concept that people attempt every now and then, but mostly fail, which is creating a film that seems to follow one seamless shot, with no visible cuts. Exploring themes of classic slasher tropes, and doing something very interesting with it that I won't spoil, the film cleverly uses its extremely well done technical aspect to pull you into the story, until it ends with a wonderful punchline that is both fresh, and very entertaining.

Director Shant created something with this that undoubtedly stick out of the masses of horror shorts that you see on the festival circuit every year, and places itself on the very top of the list with technical finesse and high entertainment. I'm eagerly awaiting Shant's next film.

To give credit to it, Night of the Slasher does at least try to play with post-modern horror ideas. The plot sees a girl strip to her pants, dance to music, drink, get frisky with a guy, and all the things that usually spell death in a horror movie. However in this case it is a deliberate ploy to summon a serial killer so she can get revenge for a previous attack.

The plot is ripe with 80's clichés – the indestructible masked killer, the music, the girl with her wild blonde hair, and of course the list itself. There is a certain amount of enjoyment to be had from this but unfortunately this film is a case of potential more than delivery. It plays with genre clichés but not in a really smart way. It is sort of creepy in the odd moment, but it isn't really in a lingering or memorable way. The humor is there in a knowing sense, but it doesn't really draw you in and make you go with it. The one- shot is a nice idea, but it is too obviously masked and in the end it didn't feel like it was trying to appear as a one-shot film.

It is worth a look but mostly it is a film that misses the mark fairly consistently, which is a shame because it is close enough that it could have been better.

The use of the cliches of the genre. This is axis of this modest short film, almost a resume of horror films, using , in not bad manner, familiar scenes but having, as lead sin, the unrealism. Something missing for do it coherent work. And, mazbe, that is the ash taste after its end, when zou expect more than a sketch of answer. But the tension and the rhztm of fight scene are more than good points of a nice horror.
