Rachel Bloom's Do You Want Kids? Series Lands Pilot Order at ABC
Image
Last year, it was announced that Drama Desk nominee Rachel Bloom was set to write and star in the new comedy series, Do You Want Kids?, for ABC. Deadline has now confirmed that the network has given a pilot order for the show, which she wrote alongside her husband, the TV and film writer Dan Gregor. Both also serve as producers. The half-hour show will follow a husband and wife who navigate between two universes: one where they have a child and another where they do not. Steve Levitan is executive producing the project for 20th Television. Bloom is perhaps best known for the CW musical dramedy Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which she co-created, executive produced, and starred in as ‘Rebecca Bunch.’ Bloom won the 2016 Golden...

ABC Pilot Order: Rachel Bloom Stars In ‘Do You Want Kids?’ Comedy She Co-Wrote With Dan Gregor
Image
Exclusive: ABC has handed a pilot order to Do You Want Kids?, a single-camera comedy starring Rachel Bloom in her return to broadcast TV after co-creating and headlining the CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Bloom co-wrote the pilot script for the 20th Television-produced Do You Want Kids with her husband, film and TV writer Dan Gregor. The duo executive produce with Steven Levitan and Danielle Stokdyk of the 20th TV-based Levitan Productions.

This marks the first comedy pilot order — and second overall — at ABC this year. The project, which landed at ABC as a pitch last October in competitive situation, was among the hot prospects this past spring, when the network greenlighted its first pilot of 2025, drama Rj Decker, and again this summer as ABC brass were making “second cycle” pickup decisions.

The ABC summer 2025 pilot buzz roster also included the Scrubs reboot, which has since been ordered straight-to-series; the potential Rookie spinoff,...

Universal & The Lego Group Developing Comedy ‘Inner Child’ From James Morosini
Image
Exclusive: Inner Child, an elevated Lego comedy from James Morosini, is in early development at Universal and The Lego Group, sources tell Deadline.

Reps for Lego and Universal declined comment, but sources close to the project said Lego Group will produce. Plot details are being kept under wraps.

The origin story here is interesting in that the project originated as an original spec from Morosini that had nothing to do with the Lego universe. It was originally a bit of an edgier concept, written for live-action. But since falling for the script and snapping it up, execs at Universal and Lego Group have elected to take the material in a direction, visually and otherwise, befitting the Lego brand.

First introduced in Denmark in 1932, the Lego brand has continued to engage audiences around the world by expanding into feature films more than a decade ago. In 2020, Universal closed a five-year exclusive...

For the ‘Naked Gun’ Writers, a Guiding Goal: ‘What’s the Stupidest Thing We Can Get Liam Neeson to Say?’
Image
[Editor’s note: The following interview contains minor spoilers for “The Naked Gun.”]

There are a few jokes that “The Naked Gun” screenwriters and long-time partners Dan Gregor and Doug Mand are sad didn’t make it into Akiva Schaffer’s long-hoped-for new entry into the spoof canon. But mostly, the duo is thrilled about the stuff that did make it in there. All the stuff, really, enough to make a bona-fide, honest-to-God, true-blue spoof feature, the kind made by a studio and with a budget and giant stars and a full-fledged theatrical release.

For two creators (best known for everything from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” to “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers”) who can still easily and amiably recall the feeling of seeing “Spaceballs” or the original “Naked Gun” films for the first time, it’s a dream come true. A silly dream, but still. We need those kinds of dreams these days.

The film, starring Liam Neeson, is both a reimagining...

9 Clips to Remind You Why Kristen Johnston Is One of the Greatest Living Comedic Actors
Image
Tomorrow, Netflix is premiering Leanne, a new sitcom. Some will think of this as a vehicle for stand-up comic Leanne Morgan, which is fair: It is her name in the title, she’s credited as a co-creator and the show revolves around her character, also named Leanne, navigating a midlife split from her longtime husband Bill (Ryan Stiles). Some will categorize it among the many multicam sitcoms for which its co-creator, Chuck Lorre, is known, including Two and A Half Men, The Big Bang Theory and Dharma & Greg. But discerning viewers will have marked “New Kristen Johnston show” on their calendars as soon as Morgan, during her guest co-host stint, threw to a preview clip on Today’s fourth hour.

For any who doubt whether Johnston should always be considered a headliner — including in Leanne, where Johnston’s character Carol is undeniably the sidekick to her sister, the show...

The Naked Gun Review — Liam Neeson is Hilarious Because He Commits to the Bit
Image
The Naked Gun has me asking, “What happened to kill the comedy film?” Tentpole, IP-driven franchises that sell well overseas have pushed the genre to the sidelines. Another issue is that comedy films often rely on star power. We haven’t had a breakout comedic lead in the vein of Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler in years.

The latter made the jump to streaming—Happy Gilmore 2 fans, rejoice! Melissa McCarthy once looked like the genre’s savior, but her husband’s heavy involvement in her projects arguably derailed her momentum. With no new marketable stars, comedy began blending into other genres—Deadpool & Wolverine, for example.

They say comedy evolves, but cancel culture and cultural shifts started to smother creative risk-taking. So, in a full-circle moment, studios returned to The Naked Gun—the fourth installment of the classic spoof franchise. And it’s the movie we didn’t know we needed.

'Devil Wears Prada 2' Hints at Anne Hathaway's New Love Interest
Image
If you were looking forward to seeing Andy and Nate together in the highly anticipated The Devil Wears Prada 2, then we have some sad news for you. Back in June, Entertainment Weekly reported that Adrian Grenier, who played Andy's boyfriend Nate Cooper in the first movie, would not be returning for the sequel. And now, the same outlet has confirmed that a new actor has been cast to portray Andy's love interest in the upcoming sequel — and we already know who it is. So, who will play Anne Hathaway's on-screen boyfriend in The Devil Wears Prada 2?

EW revealed that Colin From Accounts co-creator and star Patrick Brammall (who you may also recognize from the supernatural drama Evil) is set to play Andy's new love interest in The Devil Wears Prada 2. However, he is not the only new face joining the cast, which consists of Hathaway, Meryl Streep,...

Lewis Black, Tony Hale, Liza Lapira, Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Maya Hawke, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Paul Walter Hauser, and Ayo Edebiri in Divertida Mente 2 (2024)
A24 announces a new English-language voice cast led by Michelle Yeoh for the highest-grossing animated film Ne Zha 2
Lewis Black, Tony Hale, Liza Lapira, Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Maya Hawke, Adèle Exarchopoulos, Paul Walter Hauser, and Ayo Edebiri in Divertida Mente 2 (2024)
When most people think about the highest-grossing animated films of all time, they gravitate toward movies like Pixar’s Inside Out 2 ($1.6B+), Disney’s Frozen II ($1.4B+), The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.3B+), and 2013’s Frozen ($1.3B+). However, there’s one film that outshines them all: Yang Yu aka Jiaozi’s Ne Zah 2, a Chinese animated film that, earlier this year, earned $2.215B at the global box office. It goes without saying that more people should experience this animated phenomenon, and now, thanks to A24, they will!

According to A24, an English-language dub of Ne Zah 2 will be released on August 22. It will feature Michelle Yeoh as the lead character’s mother, Lady Yin.

“A rebellious young boy, Ne Zha, is feared by the gods and born to mortal parents with wild, uncontrolled powers,” a synopsis for the film reads. “Now he’s faced with an ancient force intent on destroying humanity,...

‘Ne Zha 2’ English-language trailer reveals Oscar talent: Everything to know about all-time highest-grossing animated feature
Image
At 2025's halfway point, A Minecraft Movie, Lilo & Stitch, and Sinners are the year's three biggest box-office success stories — on U.S. screens anyway. Internationally, though, those chicken jockeys, aliens, and vampires have been left in the dust by a rambunctious sprite named Ne Zha, the star of a Chinese-language animated sequel that's been a headlining attraction at multiplexes around the world for six months and counting. The first trailer for the upcoming English-language version debuted online Tuesday and spotlights the film's eye-popping animation, as well as funny animal jokes that easily cross borders.

Since opening in China in January, Ne Zha 2 has broken the $2 billion barrier at the global box office, joining such rarefied company as James Cameron's Avatar movies and the one-two punch of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. While the bulk of those grosses have come from its native land — where it has earned...

The main cast, which consisted of Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, Anne Hathaway as Andy Sachs, Emily Blunt as Emily Charlton, and Stanley Tucci as Nigel, is officially coming back. Bloom, who co-created and starred in Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Brammall, who co-created, executive-produced, and starred in Colin From Accounts, have just been cast, but there are no details on their characters yet. The sequel will also mark a reunion between Bloom and screenwriter Aline Brosch McKenna, as the duo created Crazy Ex-Girlfriend together. McKenna had written the 2006 original,...

Anne Hathaway Is Back on the Runway In First ‘Devil Wears Prada 2’ Image

Andrea Sachs is back! Today, Anne Hathaway (The Idea of You) took to social media to share a first look at the beloved character returning for The Devil Wears Prada 2. The highly anticipated sequel has begun production, meaning that fans are bound to get new looks for all major characters in the coming weeks. The movie is slated to debut in theaters in early 2026.

20 years of YouTube: In 2015, Casey Neistat revolutionized the vlog without removing his shades
Image
In February 2025, YouTube turned 20. The video site has gone through a lot over the past two decades, including an acquisition, an earnings glow-up, and multiple generations of star creators. In our 20 Years of YouTube series, we’ll examine the uploads, trends, and influencers that have defined the world’s favorite video site — one year at a time. Click here for a full archive of the series.

We are now halfway through this project, equidistant from YouTube’s inception and the current year. And in many ways, 2015 was the inflection point that separated the creator community’s past from its present.

As PewDiePie brought viewership and subscriber numbers to unprecedented heights, channels like DisneyCollectorBR signaled a shift to nameless, faceless content that is still occurring today. In 2015, multi-channel networks were starting to merge with the media corporations that acquired them, the number of active creators was skyrocketing, and a humble lip-sync app called musical.

Inside the Wonderful, Improbable Return of Ivy
Image
Andy Chase and Dominique Durand needed to see what was left of their band. It was 2021, a decade after the last album they’d made with the acclaimed indie-pop group Ivy, and a year after the sudden, tragic death from Covid of the band’s third member, Adam Schlesinger. So Chase and Durand rented a car and drove from New York to Rhode Island, where they’d put all of Ivy’s archives into storage the previous year.

“She and I stood on ladders and stood on boxes,” Chase recalls.

ABC Pilot Buzz: ‘The Rookie’ Spinoff Heats Up, ‘Scrubs’ Reboot Inches Forward & More
Image
It’s pilot season at ABC. The broadcast network, which has been leaning into its “second cycle” strategy involving off-cycle pilot orders targeting midseason, picked up its first 2025 pilot, Rj Decker, in May, with Scott Speedman recently cast as the lead. It may soon be joined by another crime drama pilot led by a TV star in his 40s-50s, The Rookie North.

The spinoff, from The Rookie creator Alexi Hawley, has been gaining momentum for a pilot order, which would come once the lead is cast. A handful of known actors have already been approached for the role, I hear.

The Rookie North is one of several projects in serious pilot consideration at ABC, along with the long-gestating Scrubs reboot, and two family comedies, the Rachel Bloom starrer Do You Want Kids?, which features a couple with and without a baby, and Mittens, which revolves around a neighborhood cat.

Comedian Eddie Pepitone Sets July Debut For Veeps Special ‘The Collapse’
Image
Exclusive: Veteran comic Eddie Pepitone is preparing to release a new hour of stand-up, The Collapse, which will debut on streaming platform Veeps on July 17 and be released as a comedy album via Blonde Medicine on August 15.

Exec produced by Patton Oswalt and directed by Steven Feinartz, The Collapse is described as a true Pepitone rant-and-romp as he barrels through the heightened emotions and anxieties of modern life. Over the course of the hour, he pores over several micro topics and some self-deprecating examinations of his behavior, unpacking notions like the “self-loathing that attaches to your face like that thing in Alien.”

Said Pepitone, “The special for me is always an accumulation of rage and tension that has to be let out. I always remember that my first job is to be funny, so I always talk about my personal collapse and hypocrisies, while addressing the societal collapse. My penchant for self-loathing,...

Alma & the Wolf trailer: Ethan Embry horror film reaches theatres and digital this week
Image
The horror film Alma & the Wolf is set to receive a theatrical and digital release this Friday, June 20th – and to help you decide whether or not you’re going to be watching this movie in a few days, we have the trailer embedded above.

Directed by Michael Patrick Jann from a screenplay written by Abigail Miller, the film has the following synopsis: After a violent animal attack, paranoia spreads through Spiral Creek. But when Deputy Ren Accord gets too close, his son vanishes, and reality begins to fracture. This appears to be somewhat of a werewolf movie, with a whole lot of mind-boggling “what the hell is going on?” trickery mixed in.

Jann’s previous directing credits include Drop Dead Gorgeous, Organ Trail, and episodes of The Spiderwick Chronicles, Daybreak, The Good Doctor, Ghosted, Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, Atypical, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, The Last Man on Earth,...

How Rachel Bloom used silliness to explore ‘the worst period of’ her life in ‘Death, Let Me Do My Special’
Image
"It's a weird show." That's how Rachel Bloom describes her Netflix comedy special, Death, Let Me Do My Special. "It's stand-up, mixed with storytelling, mixed with songs, mixed with a one-act play," she tells Gold Derby. "I can never just do the straightforward thing. I always have to do the weird hard-to-describe thing."

In the musical comedy special, Bloom is literally heckled by Death (played by David Hull). "Death being an interrupter has been done before," she notes. "But Death being a heckler who keeps trying to divert a show feels unique and specific to me, and how 2020 felt for me and how I see the world."

With Death forcing Bloom to confront her own experiences of loss, the comedian explores the darkest moments of her life. This culminates with Bloom describing a month in 2020, during which one of her best friends and writing partners, Adam Schlesinger, died of Covid.

The Devil Wears Prada 2: Everything We Know So Far
Image
It's official: "The Devil Wears Prada," the beloved fashion comedy that first came out in 2006, is getting a sequel. So what do we need to know?

I'll be honest and say that, as of this writing, the details about this sequel are somewhat vague. The original was based on Lauren Weisberger's 2003 novel of the same name, which the author says was itself based on her own personal experiences working underneath magazine maven Anna Wintour at Vogue. In 2013, Weisberger released a sequel titled "Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns," which sees the book's version of Andrea "Andy" Sachs reunite with Miranda Priestly years after working as her second assistant at the fictional publication Runway. What we do know about "The Devil Wears Prada 2," though, is that it's not set to follow the same plot as Weisberger's literary sequel.

It's not entirely surprising that we're getting a second "The Devil Wears Prada" film,...

The Naked Gun Official Trailer Is The Single Most Important Trailer Of The Year (And Maybe All-Time)
Image
To kickstart their very Mission: Impossible focused CinemaCon presentation, Paramount first debuted the official trailer for their upcoming action-comedy The Naked Gun, a movie they are cheekily describing as "The single most important Naked Gun movie since the other Naked Gun movies."

It's a short teaser, featuring leading man Liam Neeson, as he intervenes during a bank heist, but you're going to have to just watch it to believe it. We also learn that he's playing Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen's Lt. Frank Drebin, who the film will honor and it seems like they'll do it in typical Naked Gun fashion.

The film will provide some much-needed humor to an action-packed summer, opening in the wake of Marvel Studios' The Fantastic Four: First Steps and opposite the animated sequel The Bad Guys 2 and the body horror film Together. It's likely Fantastic Four will repeat as the box office champ,...

Liam Neeson Lets It All Hang Out in New Trailer for The Naked Gun Reboot: Watch
Image
The teaser trailer for The Naked Gun reboot starring Liam Neeson sees his character, Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., letting it all hang out while attempting to stop a bank robbery. Watch it below.

Elsewhere in the trailer, we see Neeson and Capt. Ed Hocken (Paul Walter Hauser) paying tribute to their respective fathers, Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) and Cpt. Ed Hocken (George Kennedy). There’s also a nod to the real-life crimes of O.J. Simpson, with his character’s son gazing at a photo and declining to remember him fondly.

“Only one man has the particular set of skills… to lead Police Squad and save the world!” reads the official logline. Lt. Frank Drebin Jr. follows in his father’s footsteps in The Naked Gun.”

Out in theaters on August 1st, the film was directed by The Lonely Island’s Akiva Schaffer, who co-wrote the script with Dan Gregor and Doug Mand.

How The Creative Coalition Will Converge on Capitol Hill
Image
As pundits wonder whether or not President Trump will attend this year’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, the politics of entertainment funding carries on. Following February’s think tank-esque National Arts Advocacy Summit in Summerlin, Las Vegas, The Creative Coalition (Tcc) and an entertainment-community delegation will head to Capitol Hill the weekend of the dinner to speak directly with lawmakers for continued federal support of the arts. Amid a fraught backdrop that includes Trump’s firing of the Kennedy Center board and installing himself as chair, and Elon Musk calling for defunding NPR, Tcc may face an uphill battle on April 25.

The Summerlin summit in February set the strategy — to lead with economic impact. “The arts are not just a cultural asset — they are a cornerstone of economic growth and national prosperity,” said Tim Daly, Tcc president. “The arts sector generates over $877 billion annually, accounting for 4.5 percent of the...

Image
Kate Hudson admitted on the “Capital Breakfast” radio show (via Entertainment Weekly) that turning down “The Devil Wears Prada” was “a bad call.” Before Anne Hathaway was cast as Andrea “Andy” Sachs, director David Frankel met with the likes of Hudson, Rachel McAdams, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman and Kirsten Dunst.

“That was a bad call. It was a timing thing, it was one of those things where I couldn’t do it, and I should’ve made it happen, and I didn’t,” Hudson said, all these years later. “That was one where when I saw it I was like, ‘Ugh.'”

Hudson maintained that “everything happens for a reason,” but she still admitted that she “should’ve made that work.” The movie, which was a box office hit with $327 million and a two-time Oscar nominee, remains one of Hathaway’s most iconic roles.

Casting Directors Lament State Of Production In Los Angeles: “I Haven’t Worked Since Last June”
Image
The mood at Wednesday’s 40th anniversary Artios Awards may have been celebratory, but several casting directors acknowledged that Hollywood’s ongoing contraction is continuing to have a negative impact on their profession.

Before the awards show at the Beverly Hilton that paid tribute to the casting work on Wicked, A Complete Unknown, Emilia Pérez and Conclave, CDs privately lamented about the state of production in Los Angeles and how opportunities remain scarce.

“It’s been a hard time for a lot of folks in our industry,” Casting Society President Destiny Lilly tells Deadline. “There was the strikes and the recent fires which have been really devastating for people in this community. And there are still ripples from the pandemic. I think across the industry we’ve heard that there are fewer jobs and that affects casting professionals as well.”
