Fat Angels (1981)

Fat Angels

7/10

A nice and attractive comedy about the difficult love relationships between fat people.

A gripping comedy directed by Manuel Summers (To'er mundo e güeno) filmed in the United States and with actors unknown to the Spanish public. An overweight man, Mike (Farnham Scott ) who works for Frank, a sympathetic and energetic theater impresario who is also his friend and protector., as well as a woman, Mary (January Stevens), become penpals but are too embarrassed to send each other photographs of themselves and instead exchange pictures of two thinner people. Mike keeps up correspondence with Mary, who lives in Florida and whom he met through the heart mail. When Mary asks for a photograph, Mike decides to send her one of Jackie (Robert Reynolds) , a handsome young man who is the star of the show where he works. What he doesn't know is that Mary has the same weight problems as him and so she sends him a photo of the girl (Amy Steel) from the wealthy house where she works as a maid. Meantime, they deal with the physical and emotional problems of being overweight . Comedic complications arise when the two penpals finally arrange to meet in person.

This is a comedy about life's excesses and deficiencies ; packing emotion , laughs , a sensitive love story and philosophy . The best thing about the film is the tenderness that Summers shows for his characters, who are anything but conventional. Uplifting Spanish romantic comedy with crazy events , entertainment and absurd situations . Being original and compellingly written by screen-writer and filmmaker Summers and satirical writer and cartoonist Chummy Chumez. ¨Fat Angels¨ is a decent film, but not because it resists the easy joke or gross-out gag. It embraces them, and turns what could have been a simple comedy drama into something far deeper and more affecting in the process . This agreeable film packs amusement , comical situations , tongue-in-cheek , surrealist comedy including conventional pitfalls and many other things . Sitting in a strange middle ground between the completely absurd and the stylishly cool . This is a fast crazy movie about the far relationship among a sweetheart couple who write love letters to each other but don't know each other , including a lot of fun situations , antics , bemusement and a bunch of very hilarious roles . This is a special Spanish comedy from the Eighties, set in New York, with the usual ingredients such as wild humor topped with a little bit of original touches here and there and the tone of the film is light-hearted .

The cast, mostly unknown, are pretty well , giving enticing performances. Starring Farnham Scott who gives a fine acting as a lonely but good-tempered 150-kilogram pianist, along with the newcomer January Stevens who's pretty well as the hopeful woman who also deeply desires love . It's still an obvious commercial film, with some predictable plot beats. It's too enjoyable, though it can't keep the quality up all the way throughout . Still, it's a laudably charming production, witty, intelligent and deeply , deeply moving with it . This is a slightly funny film with entertaining events , giggles , emotion , and romance . The film moves in fits and starts most of which would be desirable , with more traps the viewer resists any kind, and some moments of enjoyment and others quite a few ridiculous . It's an attractive , moving film , perfectly acted and concerning the narration about the relationships among some peculiar roles. This Fat Angels (1981) is a good companion to another made thirty year later: Fat People (2009) by Daniel Saánchez Arévalo with Antonio de la Torre, Roberto Enríquez, Verónica Sánchez, Raúl Arévalo, Leticia Herrero, Fernando Albizu .

The motion picture was compellingly directed by Manuel Summers . His first big hit was ¨"From Pink to Yellow" , it was successfully premiered , got awesome critics and had big hit at the Spanish box office . It won several awards in San Sebastian Festival and Circle of cinematographic writers . Manuel was a comic books humorist who publicized in ¨Pueblo¨ diary and on magazines as ¨Hermano Lobo¨and ¨La Codorniz¨. He was a comedian actor and an acceptable filmmaker . He realized a lot of films including social critical which tended not to be very well received by the censor . His successful first film ¨Del Rosa Al Amarillo¨ was followed by personal works wasted by excessive jokes as ¨El Juego De La Oca¨(65) . His first films were well considered in the ¨New Spanish Cinema¨ of the sixties and Summers was deemed to be the great hope of the Spaniard cinematic ; however , being subsequently frustrated . Summers was really interested in juvenile love stories and extreme humor . In his early and best first films , Summers developed sour critics to selfish villagers and repressed characters , coerced by social conventionalism , gossip and hypocrisy . He had a big flop titled ¨Juguetes Rotos¨ (66) . Summers , then , made two typical Spanish comedies with Alfredo Landa : ¨No Somos De Piedra¨(67) and ¨Porque Te Engaña Tu Marido¨ (68) . He , subsequently , directed teenager films as ¨Adiós Ciqueña Adios¨ (71) , ¨El Niño Es Nuestro¨(73) that achieved big hit and some of them are censored as ¨Ya Soy Mujer¨(75) , ¨Mi Primer Pecado¨ and ¨Me Hace Falta Un Bigote¨ , also concerning about romances among boys during the post-war in Madrid . His last works are mediocre , making fake documentary , such as : ¨To er Mundo e Gueno ¨ , ¨To Er Mundo E Mejo¨ , ¨To Er Mundo E Demasiao¨ and ¨Biblia En Pasta¨ (85) . He finishes his career directing his son David Summers , a known singer leader of the band ¨Hombres G¨ in commercial titles as ¨Sufre Mamon¨(87) ,¨and ¨Sueltate El Pelo¨(88).
