When Steven Soderbergh set out to make Mosaic—a murder mystery surrounding a magnetic, commanding and complex female character—he had in mind one particular actress who can expertly convey all those traits with barely a blink: Sharon Stone. And in playing the doomed Olivia Lake, Stone enthusiastically dug deep into a character that was “messy and flawed and vulnerable and warts and all.” Which is not surprising, given Stone’s penchant for authenticity as her career has progressed, and her refusal to cave to the stereotypical roles on offer for older women.

This role was essentially written for you. What were the conversations between you, Soderbergh and the writer Ed Solomon like beforehand?

Well, I didn’t know a lot about it in advance. Steven called me and told me that it was a big piece, that we would each just get our own section—the script is 500 pages...

In 2004, Sharon Stone won the Best Guest Drama Actress Emmy Award for her scene-stealing turn as attorney Sheila Carlisle on “The Practice.” This year, with her acclaimed performance in Steven Soderbergh‘s six-part HBO miniseries “Mosaic,” Stone is well-positioned for a return to the Emmys, this time in Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress.

In “Mosaic,” Stone portrays Olivia Lake, a successful children’s book author and illustrator living an extravagant, if lonesome existence in the ski resort town of Summit, Utah. She crosses paths with the handsome artist and bartender Joel (Garrett Hedlund) and, hoping their friendship might blossom into something more romantic, invites him to rent out space in her lavish home. During this time, Olivia also meets the charming Eric (Frederick Weller) who, unbeknownst to her, is a con man employed by a neighbor hoping to force her to sell the property.

After a brief hiatus from acting, Sharon Stone found the perfect project for her Hollywood return in the HBO miniseries, “Mosaic.”

“It is a great role and I feel very blessed because I took time out from my career, and to come back to this type of intriguing work… I found it very, very wonderful,” Stone said Sunday after taking the stage at Deadline’s The Contenders Emmys event.

The veteran actress plays Olivia Lake in director Steven Soderbergh’s murder mystery about an investigation into the murder of children’s author, Lake.

For Stone, the series offered an opportunity to work with Soderbergh, whose previous projects including the Oscar-winning Traffic, as well as Erin Brockovich and The Knick have made him one of Hollywood’s most prolific directors.
