Anita Bruvere

Anita Bruvere’s Stop Motion Short ‘Home’ Is a Story of Community Told Through the Living History of a Building
Image
Filmmaker Anita Bruvere’s animated short Home tells the true story of a real building on Princelet Street in London and the history of community, immigration and diversity that occurred within its walls. Bruvere adopts a stop motion format to weave her story, which gives the intimate moments of fabric sewing a sense of close tactility and the cleverly constructed scene transitions a free-flowing ease. It really is gorgeously put together and there’s a montage towards the end that brilliantly shifts the seeming specificity of the story into something universal. Dn is proud to premiere Home on our pages today and is joined by Bruvere below for an in-depth breakdown of the making of her film, touching on everything from the historical purpose of the materials she used to the lack of change that still resides in the public discourse on immigration.

What was it that brought you to make Home?...

Watch: Fascinating Stop-Motion Short Film 'Fish Boy' Exploring Guilt
Hugh Skinner in The Romanoffs (2018)
"How are you so kind?" Here's yet another outstanding stop-motion animated short film we just have to feature. Fish Boy is a short film made by filmmaker Anita Bruvere as her final graduation project at the National Film & Television School in the UK. It's described as a "surrealist tale about the all-encompassing nature of living with guilt." The poetic short features a guilt-ridden "Fish Boy" and a woman named Laura - voiced by Hugh Skinner and Emily Taaffe. Fish Boy lives in darkness, his guilt about the past slowly consuming him. His girlfriend Laura is a light of hope in his dark world. But despite his efforts... his past continues to chase him, putting them both in danger. This short has some really mesmerizing texture and designs. The water & waves especially are so stunning with all the different fabrics in motion. Watch below. Thanks to Short of the Week for the tip on this.

Vincent Paronnaud
Madrid — Over Oct. 4-7, the city of Segovia will host 3D Wire, Spain’s premier platforms for upcoming animation, video games, 3D and Ar content produced on the Iberian Peninsula, across Latin America and beyond.

This year’s market will see more than 1,000 industry professionals visit the historical Roman city best known for its extremely well preserved aqueducts. Segovia seems an ideal place to host an animation festival; the Alcazar de Segovia Castle is said to have inspired Walt Disney and the logo that accompanies so many of the artform’s most iconic productions.

Attendees will be invited to participate in presentations, screenings, round tables and conferences; a number of prizes will be awarded to upcoming projects; there will be a competition for animated short films. The official competition is broken up into domestic and international sections with the former featuring seven animated shorts, while the rest of the world contributes 26 – five from the U.
