At the recent world premiere of “The Bad Guys 2” in Los Angeles, franchise star Craig Robinson expressed his excitement revisiting his character for a sequel, as did several of his cast members and directors.

“I loved it because you have the confidence with it being the second one,” Robinson said. “They gave me some more crazy stuff to do. It was so much fun and passionate. It’s contagious. They’re amazing to work with alongside producer Damon [Ross] and directors Jp [Sans] and Pierre [Perifel]. I had a ball.”

Robinson voices Mr. Shark, who is a part of a group of ex-convicts determined to be good as they reenter society. “The Office” star recently made headlines for his so-called “retirement” stunt for his new marketing campaign with AT&T. When asked if he still had to clear up that he’s not quitting comedy, Robinson told Variety, “Yes, but it’s all good.

Animation did fairly well in the early years of the pandemic, even when other kinds of films were struggling. Besides the massively successful Minions: The Rise of Gru and Sing 2, DreamWorks’ The Bad Guys emerged as a surprise sleeper hit. The movie made $250 million globally, against a budget of around $80 million. Since then, DreamWorks’ has also witnessed major success with films such as Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Kung Fu Panda 4, and The Wild Robot— each of these films was produced in the same, under $100 million budget range. And now, this group has a new member: The Bad Guys 2.

Even though practically every other kind of movie was underperforming at the box office a few years ago, animated films were doing dependably well. Minions: The Rise of Gru nearly grossed $1 billion worldwide in 2022, while Sing 2 made over $400 million globally in 2021. Among these hits was DreamWorks' The Bad Guys, a heist comedy film directed by Pierre Perifel, which made exactly $250 million globally and nearly $100 million at the domestic box office. DreamWorks has now released a follow-up to the movie, which is looking at an identical opening weekend haul after earning excellent reviews from both critics and audiences.

The Bad Guys are returning to the cinemas this Friday, and The Bad Guys 2 has earned excellent numbers from the Thursday previews. The animated feature has earned positive reviews from critics and is expected to be a box office success. The Bad Guys 2 is a direct follow-up to 2022’s The Bad Guys, which was a box office success and a hit with fans and critics alike. It was only a matter of time before DreamWorks Animation would greenlight a sequel. With much of the original team returning, DreamWorks and Universal should have another hit on their hands.

Marc Maron says his dream guest for his final episode of “Wtf With Marc Maron” would be Barack Obama.

The former president appeared on a previous episode of Maron’s show back in June 2015.

“If we could get President Obama back, that would be good to give us a little hope or some sense of reflection,” he told Variety Wednesday at the premiere of his new animated movie “The Bad Guys 2” in Los Angeles. “Ground us a little bit.”

In June, Maron made headlines when he and producer Brendan McDonald decided to end the podcast that launched in 2009. Maron made the announcement in an episode with John Mulaney as his guest. After recording more than 1,600 episodes, Maron said that the podcast will air its final episode in the fall.

The gang is back, but the thrill is gone. When we reconnect with Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Ms. Tarantula, Mr. Shark, and Mr. Piranha, they are on the other side of a prison sentence and attempting to walk the straight and narrow. The problem is, the straight and narrow is paved with late bills, dead-end jobs, and a general sense of societal side-eye.

Mr. Wolf, the debonair leader once suited for high-stakes heists, is now stuck with a beat-up hatchback. This stark contrast between their legendary criminal past and their mundane present forms the uneasy bedrock of The Bad Guys 2.

The world may have forced them to be good, but it hasn’t forgotten they were great at being bad, and a new threat simmering in the criminal underworld is about to test whether their rehabilitation is a new identity or just a temporary disguise.

Second Acts and Second Thoughts...

The Bad Guys 2 is a perfectly serviceable sequel that takes what worked in the first movie and makes it a slightly slicker. It’s definitely more polished and confident than the 2022 original, but this ambitious second instalment sticks so closely to the same old formula that it feels more like a competent update than something fresh and new.

The film starts out with some ambition, though. There’s a cool car chase in Cairo, that shows off Mr Wolf’s (Sam Rockwell) criminal skills. This flashback makes you think you’re going to get a deeper story. But then we jump back to the present, and the gang—Wolf, Snake, Shark, Piranha, and Tarantula—are trying to be good, and it’s a little awkward. Their clumsy journey toward respectability is actually the best part of the film, as it explores what it means to change and chose to do good over evil.

The first Bad Guys (2022) stood out for several reasons, primarily for a voice cast that sounded like the most stellar Sundance movie ever. The reason it worked, however, is that it capitalized on parent fatigue, replacing the black-and-white lecturing of the average Disney morality tale with subversive shades of grey, asking kids to root for a criminal gang of animals that, for a time, are only pretending to reform (until they inevitably do for real). This premise immediately sets up a tricky double negative for the sequel: Where do they go next? By pretending not to have not reformed all along (or not)?

This question is staved off for a good 15 minutes or so by a hectic opening sequence set in Cairo five years previously. “The Bad Guys 2” is a benignly rambunctious cartoon about a quintet of critters — the debonair Mr. Wolf (Sam Rockwell), the goofy/badass Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), the flatulent Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos), the disguise expert Mr. Shark (Craig Robinson), and the brainiac Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina) — who are famous for being bad guys (they’re known as “the Bad Guys”), but when you come right down to it they’re actually pretty good guys. After playing the good guy in his movies and TV shows, Ramos is embracing villainhood in the new Disney+ series from Marvel Studios, Ironheart. In the show, he plays Parker Robbins/The Hood, who hires Dominique Thorne’s Riri Williams for a series of heists. Will James Gunn make a bold move with Barry Allen, aka the Flash? Gunn would love to bring more female superheroes into his DC Universe, and the Flash is one of the central characters who could potentially be gender-swapped in the new Dcu.

There’s no doubt that such a decision would invite a whole lot more trouble for Gunn, possibly even more than the backlash DC faced over Ezra Miller’s The Flash in 2023.

James Gunn set a bold and exciting precedent for the new DC Universe (Dcu) even before he was appointed as the Co-Chairman of DC Studios alongside his producing partner Peter Safran. The opening scene of his 2021 film The Suicide Squad massacred several villains who were part of Task Force X, including even the fan-favorite Captain Boomerang, played by Jai Courtney. The opening scene made it feel as though no one was safe, and the same principle would carry over into projects like Peacemaker and Creature Commandos. The Bad Guys 2 director Pierre Perifel and co-director Jp Sans touched down at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Wednesday to unveil 35 high-octane minutes of the animated heist comedy movie ahead of its theatrical launch in July.

The sequel opens with former heist maestro Mr Wolf (voiced by Sam Rockwell) living in L.A. on his uppers following his decision to abandon a life of crime, alongside Bad Guy collaborators Mr. Snake (Marc Maron), Mr Shark (Craig Robinson), Mr. Piranha (Anthony Ramos) and Ms. Tarantula (Awkwafina).

DreamWorks Animation has treated the audience to the very first presentation of “The Bad Guys 2” at Annecy. It’s “bigger, better and badder.” Certainly, the exclusive preview proved oe of the best received of sneak-peeks to date at the French animation mega-fest, reactions at which are often echoed in box office worldwide. The film will be released on Aug. 1.

“We’ve been incredibly happy with what we’ve been cooking,” said director Pierre Perifel at the presentation.

“We’ll elevate the heist genre to action comedy,” added his co-director – “Robin to his Batman, Dumb to his Dumber” – Jp Sans, recalling his love for the original book that felt like “Reservoir Dogs,’ with animals, for kids.”

“It was a little hard to adapt for kids. There’s a lot of blood and a lot of fuck-yous, so we went more for an ‘Ocean’s Eleven,’ ‘Snatch,’ ‘Baby Driver’ type of adaptation.

“The Bad Guys” are back.

The sequel to DreamWorks Animation’s 2022 hit, based on the popular book series by Aaron Blabey, arrives on Aug. 1. Ryan Reynolds' upcoming R-rated live-action and CGI hybrid movie is delayed. The Deadpool actor was most recently seen in the R-rated action comedy Deadpool & Wolverine, which grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide and became the second highest-grossing film in 2024. Last year, he also teamed up with John Krasinski for the family comedy If, in which he starred and produced.

Looking ahead, Reynolds has several titles in various stages of development. He is working with directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley on the action-adventure movie Mayday for Apple TV+. While details are under wraps, Reynolds is joined by Kenneth Branagh, Maria Bakalova, Marcin Dorociński, Lovell Adams-Gray, Clark Johnson, and Alex Mallari Jr. in the cast. Warner Bros. is delaying the release of its live-action hybrid movie Animal Friends.

The road trip adventure feature is now set to hit theaters May 1, 2026, after previously having been scheduled for Oct. 10, 2025. Peter Atencio directs the film from a script by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider.

Ryan Reynolds, Jason Momoa, Aubrey Plaza, Addison Rae, Dan Levy, Lil Rel Howery and Ellie Bamber round out the cast. The project hails from Legendary, Maximum Effort and Prime Focus Studios.

Disney’s sequel film The Devil Wears Prada 2 is also scheduled for release on May 1, 2026. Disney’s Avengers: Doomsday recently moved its release date from that weekend to later in 2026.

Animal Friends was originally set up at Sony Pictures and shifted to Warner Bros. last year through the studio’s deal with Legendary.

Exclusive: Creditors of indie outfit Yale Entertainment are out more than $50 million following a failed attempt at restructuring the company in the lead-up to its collapse, according to multiple sources.

The company’s co-founders, Jordan Beckerman and Jordan Yale Levine, copped to the losses over the course of a nearly three-hour private Zoom meeting for investors held January 14, the footage of which has been reviewed by Deadline. The total number of creditors defaulted on is between 100 and 199, per Yale Entertainment’s May 14 bankruptcy filing in the Southern District of New York. Many loans to Yale were put forth under the understanding that they were backed by corporate guarantees from the company, according to multiple sources familiar with Yale’s operations.

Clay Pecorin, an investor and self-described friend of the duo colloquially referred to “the Jordans,” served as a liaison of sorts to investors on the Zoom, given his experience in financial restructuring.

A couple of months ago, the Marvel Studios social media accounts started live-streaming a video they labeled as an all-caps Announcement. The video showed a soundstage where, one by one, chairs reserved for actors were revealed, with a new chair coming into view every 10 minutes or so. Earlier this week, we got a first look at what appeared to be a downed Sentinel on the set of Avengers: Doomsday. Now, we have a birds-eye view offering a clearer shot at the mutant-hunting robot's legs (in what's believed to be the X-Mansion's grounds).

We also have reason to believe that we'll see the remains of more than one Sentinel, as you can see below.

Unfortunately, the legs are still covered up, but the photographer who took these shots has confirmed that the footprints they've seen elsewhere on set match the Sentinel design from the comics.

Exclusive: Yale Entertainment, the independent production company of Jordan Yale Levine and Jordan Beckerman, has filed for bankruptcy, Deadline has learned.

“Unfortunately, that is true – Yale Entertainment has filed for bankruptcy,” the founders said in a statement to Deadline. “The climate for making independent films has become increasingly difficult – with the pandemic, the industry-wide strikes, and a major shift in the independent film marketplace. We’ve been very fortunate to have collaborated with some extremely talented creatives, and we’re grateful to everyone that has been a part of Yale’s journey.”
