In a relationship with fellow actor Laura Carmichael since first meeting on the Downton Abbey (2010) shoot.

He was rejected from drama school twice before securing a place at London's Central School of Speech and Drama. He landed the role on Downton Abbey 20 months after graduating.

He almost chose to join the mounted police instead of pursuing a career in acting.

He has two horses named George and Norfolk.

He is also a musician and is in a band called Luna.

It's hard to balance as it's a full-on sport - you can't really do it in half measures. I do it every now and again and compete when I'm not working. British eventing - dressage, showjumping and cross country. I'm nowhere near good enough for Team GB, though. It's so hard to be successful in that sport.

I love horses. I wanted to be a vet, but I was nowhere near academic enough. Then I wanted to go into the mounted police or the Household Cavalry. I've got two horses back home called George and Norfolk.
