Honest truth? Kayoze Irani’s feature-film debut is not as unwatchable as what the reviews tell you. We are living in the era of pavlovian responses: if one critic likes a film blatantly ripped off from a Korean tearjerker, everyone else roars in approval.

It is like being hypnotized at a rock stadium. We will, we will… shock you! Sarzameen tries very hard to shock. And that is where it goes wrong. It tries too hard. You cannot have twists in the plot which make no sense just because they will make the audience gasp. It is like designating Kajol the killer in Gupt.

I mention Kajol with a reason. She is the mother of a radicalized Kashmiri boy, who is married to an army officer named Vijay Menon, primarily to justify Prithviraj’s South Indian accent. Early in their “happily married” life, there are signs of friction as their speech-impaired son Harman feels neglected.

Sarzameen arrives with big ambitions — emotional drama, national identity, family conflict, and the scenic yet sensitive backdrop of Kashmir. Directed by debutant Kayoze Irani, and starring Prithviraj Sukumaran, Kajol, and Ibrahim Ali Khan, the film sets out to be bold and emotional. Sadly, what unfolds is a visually rich yet narratively flat experience.

Story: A Promising Concept That Never Fully Lands

The story follows Vijay Menon (Prithviraj Sukumaran), a stern Army officer, and his troubled son Harman (Ibrahim Ali Khan). Harman suffers from a speech stammer and feels emotionally neglected by his father. His life takes a dark turn when he’s kidnapped by a Kashmiri extremist outfit. The experience transforms him — mentally and ideologically.

But when Harman returns, he’s not the same boy. This internal and external conflict — between father and son, between ideology and identity — should’ve been the film’s core strength. Instead, the writing remains surface-level and misses emotional nuance,...

Patriotism is a tricky subject to navigate, especially because of how divided people are on how far it should go. Loving one’s country can be noble, but that same sentiment, taken to an extreme, is what fueled the Nazis. Kayoze Irani’s directorial debut, Sarzameen, channels the spirit of 90s Bollywood with its treatment of nationalism and a protagonist rooted in the Indian Army. Ibrahim Ali Khan, fresh off the meme-fest called Nadaaniyan, has now stepped into a more emotionally layered role, yet manages to retain his chocolate-boy charm throughout. But talking about the film, sure, the older generation might lap this up for its patriotic nostalgia, but for anyone who doesn’t worship at the altar of the army, there’s barely anything to feel. And naturally, it’s set in Kashmir.

This is a diverse provocative(sometimes too consciously so) bouquet of stories of four women in search of an emotional and physical fulfillment that eludes them because…well, they have obligations. Don’t we all!

Uneven in quality, some of the plotting conceits verge on the absurd. To begin with, let’s take the first story Majnu directed by Shashank Khaitan. Netflix introduced a slate of 40 Indian films, series and documentaries at its “See What’s Next India 2021” event today, presided over by Monika Shergill, vice president of content for Netflix India, and Srishti Behl Arya, director, International Original Film.

The film slate sees Netflix teaming with major Mumbai-based production houses such as Reliance Entertainment, T-Series, Emmay Entertainment, Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP and Karan Johar’s Dharmatic Entertainment.

With Dharmatic, Netflix is producing anthology Ajeeb Daastaans and Vivek Soni’s romantic drama Meenakshi Sundareshwar.

Netflix today hosted an event in Mumbai unveiling a hefty slate of upcoming films, series, documentaries, reality programs, and comedy specials.

There were a total of 40 projects touted during today’s showcase, some of which were previously announced, such as the Alfonso Cuaron-exec produced feature The Disciple, which as Deadline revealed Netflix took world rights on following the movie’s premiere at Venice last year.

Also on the slate are: the series Bombay Begins from Endemol Shine India, Endeavor Content and Chernin Entertainment; the relationship drama Ajeeb Daastaans, from directors Shashank Khaitan, Raj Mehta, Neeraj Ghaywan and Kayoze Irani; the feature Pagglait from Umesh Bist; and Reliance Entertainment’s Bulbul Tarang.

The film has released all over India except Punjab as the government of Punjab has banned it. On Thursday, a spokesperson for the Punjab government released an official statement announcing the ban of the film stating that the decision was taken due to prevailing strong resentment among the Valmiki community about some objectionable references to Maharishi Valmiki. The film's suspension was aimed to keep peace and social harmony in the state as the film may have caused protests. The government has suspended the film with immediate effect for two months and during this time it will be considered as an uncertified film in Punjab. Promising to create a bigger wave with the new dance number, producer Kishor Arora maintained that 'Love Letter' will be an apt track resembling the quirky comedy theme of the film. Mumbai, Jan 31: Filmmaker Karan Johar reveals he is determined to make a sequel to his 2012 film "Student Of The Year" (Soty), and launch more new talent with it.

"For all those asking... definitely planning Soty 2. Dharma (Productions) plans to make it a franchise and launch new talent with it each time," Karan posted on Twitter.

Soty saw the launch of four newcomers - Sidharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan and Kayoze Irani. The movie did well in the metros, and struck a chord with the young audience.

Karan is one to promote new talent constantly. In the past, he has given a platform to directors like Karan Malhotra.

The shooting of Karan Johar’s upcoming movie Student of the Year has almost come to an end. This is his next directorial venture after My Name is Khan in 2010. Shooting of Student of the Year is currently on in full swing and Karan recently tweeted about the last two shooting schedule of the film saying, “Last 2 schedules of Soty left…we start 2mor again…back to school!!!!”

The movie was shot at various beautiful locations such as Kashmir, Shimla, Dehradun and Thailand. The campus flick stars newcomers Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan (director David Dhawan’s son) and Alia Bhatt (filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt’s daughter). It also marks the debut of Boman Irani’s son – Kayoze Irani. Apart from the new comers, a buzz was created about Shahrukh Khan playing the role of a professor in the movie.
