The reimagined tale at the heart of Bambi: The Reckoning, the latest horror entry in the “Twisted Childhood Universe”, trades nostalgia for brutality, offering a savage reinterpretation of a once-innocent woodland icon. The story flips expectations, turning a symbol of gentleness into a merciless force of nature. As with others in this trend of corrupted folklore, it’s less about honouring the source material and more about pushing it into grotesque, sometimes laughably extreme, territory. Depending on your appetite for this kind of genre fare, it will either strike as a wild bit of pulp fun, or an uninspired attempt to wring attention from familiar childhood memories. Unfortunately, this one leans more toward the latter.

Bambi: The Reckoning is here, and it’s making more noise than anyone expected. The 2025 British horror flick reimagines the classic story of Bambi in the most brutal way yet. Directed by Dan Allen and written by Rhys Warrington, the film is part of the Twisted Childhood Universe (Tcu), which is known for turning beloved childhood characters into nightmare fuel.
This time, Bambi isn’t the sweet forest creature we remember. After witnessing his mother’s death, he goes on a violent rampage. The film follows a mother and her son who find themselves in his path. Roxanne McKee stars alongside Tom Mulheron, Nicola Wright, and others, in a cast that brings this bloody tale to life.
Filming kicked off in London in January 2024 and wrapped in just under a month. The movie hit U.S. theaters on July 25, 2025. It’s the fourth entry in the Tcu and the first...

Bambi: The Reckoning, a new British horror film from director Dan Allen and writer Rhys Warrington, is giving people a very different look at the forest. The movie reimagines the story of Bambi as a dark, violent tale of revenge. This is the fourth film in the Twisted Childhood Universe, also known as the Poohniverse, and according to critics, it might be the best one so far.
The story follows a mother and her young son who get trapped in the woods and end up being hunted by Bambi, who’s gone feral after witnessing the death of his own mother. It’s a brutal take on Felix Salten’s original novel, but one that leans all the way into horror, gore, and twisted nostalgia.

Bambi: The Reckoningis the latest entry in the Twisted Childhood Universe, which began in 2023 with Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey. The new film will be a horror-inspired take on Disney's classic Bambi story, directed by Dan Allen with a script by Rhys Warrington. The story of Bambi: The Reckoning centers around a mutated deer who embarks on a journey of revenge.
The trailer for Bambi: The Reckoningpromises something veering far away from the animated movie, using the same bloody gore and supernatural atmosphere that made Blood and Honey such a widely discussed project upon its release. Bambi: The Reckoning will also lead directly into next year's upcoming team-up event, Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble.
Speaking with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns, Dan Allen confirmed that Bambi won't be the only familiar character in his twisted Disney adaptation. While Bambi: The Reckoning will obviously be very different from Disney’s Bambi, the...

Sure, we all know about Bambi, but what about his trusty sidekick, Thumper, a rabbit with a great attitude and a fast-moving left foot? A hero is nothing without his sidekick, and the same can be said for villains, especially in Bambi: The Reckoning, the latest entry in the Twisted Childhood Universe. This mutant version of the iconic deer has its own sidekick, which you can get a glimpse of in our exclusive clip below!

As other “Twisted Childhood Universe” (Tcu) a.k.a. “Poohniverse” movies sit in the shadows, eagerly awaiting their turn to come forth and ruin your precious childhood, Dan Allen unleashes the first bona fide creature feature in the series. Don’t expect a bipedal, humanoid and verbal take on the beloved Bambi here. Quite the opposite, the star of Bambi: The Reckoning stays on all fours, doesn’t speak, and maintains some semblance of a real buck as he tears through the English countryside and builds up an impressive body count.
Before its namesake can go wild on anyone who crosses his path, Bambi: The Reckoning gets a few preliminaries out of the way. First off, a crude yet succinct animated prologue lays out the reimagined origins of the titular character, leaving the remainder of the movie to focus on the monster mayhem rather than dwell on any element of inquiry.

The fourth installment is a retelling of Felix Salten’s Bambi, a Life in the Woods, titled Bambi: The Reckoning. Rhys Warrington penned the script (also set to write Awakening Sleeping Beauty) with Dan Allen directing.
Bambi: The Reckoning follows the story of a mother and son who get in a vicious car accident. Soon after the accident, they are hunted down by Bambi, a grief-stricken deer on a deadly rampage as they seek revenge for the death of his mother. Exploitation is one thing, but the Poohniverse has taken the concept in a whole new direction. The horror genre continues to expand thanks to the bloody and oftentimes hilarious antics of what is also known as The Twisted Childhood Universe, and the filmmaker behind Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, Rhys Frake-Waterfield, is at it again. Yes, Frake-Waterfield serves as writer and producer on director Dan Allen’s upcoming Bambi: The Reckoning, and fans can check out the brand-new official trailer below. The brief synopsis for the film reads as follows:
"A mutated deer terrorizes a family in the forest while a group of mercenary hunters are sent out to hunt the bloodthirsty creature."
Unlike the wholesome way Disney took the character that originally appeared in the pages of author Felix Salten’s coming-of-age story, Bambi, a Life in the Woods (1923), Jagged Edge Productions and ITN Studios have concocted more of...

In 2023, Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey started an unlikely universe, full of characters we loved as kids but presented with a gory twist. Years later, the Twisted Childhood Universe has grown with new characters added to the roster. The last release from the franchise Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, is by far the goriest and prepares the audience for a crossover which will be a spectacle for the fans of the horror sub-genre. But before that, the next film in the franchise will be Bambi: The Reckoning. The fairytale slasher is directed by Dan Allen, who recently teased that the upcoming movie will have a deeper narrative impact beyond the blood and gore on the surface.
"So often, these films have been called 'childhood killers'; I think that is a bit extreme," Allen says. The movies from Twisted Childhood Universe have a limited release in theatres, depending on fans’ response.

Like every FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki title, Elden Ring has some iconic boss fights, brutal combat, and a hell lot of death screens. But what many players don’t consider is the sheer effort that goes into making those deaths feel real. Simon Gregor, the voice behind Praetor Rykard, previously opened up about the recording process for Elden Ring.
There are a lot of iconic lines in the game. | Image Credit: FromSoftware
In an interview, Gregor revealed that during his recording session, the developers asked him if he could do some character death sounds. According to him, it ended up taking half an hour and was a grueling process. All that death does fit the setting of the game and world, and he did great work,
Hidetaka Miyazaki and FromSoft really went above and beyond
Speaking on the Dan Allen YouTube channel, Simon Gregor described FromSoftware’s approach to directing as very respectful.

FromSoftware’s games are known for their punishing difficulty, so much so that we have an entire sub-genre of games named after them. Few people understand this better than the players who have died multiple times at the hands of bosses like Malenia or Isshin, the Sword Saint. But what does Hidetaka Miyazaki himself think of his creations?

Following the Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey movies and Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare, ITN Studios and Premiere Entertainment have released the first full trailer for the next chapter in the Twisted Childhood Universe, or "Poohniverse," Bambi: The Reckoning.
As we're sure you've already surmised, the low-budget horror parody follows a now grown-up Bambi as he seeks revenge on the hunter who killed his mother... and anyone else he happens to cross hooves with.
Of course, Bambi is far from the same defenceless fawn he was in the animated Disney classic, as he has now mutated into a gigantic, bloodthirsty monster (for some reason).
The brief synopsis reads: "Xana (McKee) and her son Benji (Mulheron) find themselves in a car wreck and soon hunted down by the vicious killing machine, Bambi. Bambi will destroy anyone in its path."

Bambi: The Reckoning ,From Disney Darling to Public Domain exploitation (And Why Your Childhood is Officially Cancelled)
So, Bambi, that wide-eyed fawn who taught us the harsh realities of forest life and the importance of not trusting men with guns, has officially kicked down the velvet ropes and stumbled into the chaotic mosh pit of the public domain. Yes, folks, as of January 2021, Bambi is free! Free to be… anything. And by “anything,” I mean apparently, a vengeful woodland terror.
Now, it took a few years for the creative minds of the “Poohverse” to realize the potential. Apparently, someone finally yelled, “Wait a minute! We can make Bambi a slasher flick!” And thus, a cinematic masterpiece was born.
Because, clearly, nothing says timeless childhood classic like turning your favorite animated characters into vengeful monsters. The Poohverse—a horror-themed cinematic experiment that began with Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey—set the stage for this twisted reimagining.
So, Bambi, that wide-eyed fawn who taught us the harsh realities of forest life and the importance of not trusting men with guns, has officially kicked down the velvet ropes and stumbled into the chaotic mosh pit of the public domain. Horror cinema that pushes boundaries is always praised, but the latest trend of reimagining childhood classics as terrifying nightmares has left people a bit confused. The Poohniverse, officially known as the Twisted Childhood Universe, has roped in some beloved characters like Winnie the Pooh and Peter Pan, but who could have thought that Bambi would be next?
A still from Bambi: The Reckoning | ITN Studios
Yes, Bambi: The Reckoning is next in their lineup, and the trailer has already led to an array of reactions. While the Poohniverse keeps expanding, this upcoming movie might be their most audacious entry yet.

When you think of Bambi, you likely picture a wide-eyed fawn who’s frolicking in the forest. A mutated and vengeful deer on a murderous rampage barely comes to mind, and thankfully so.

The adorable fawn from Disney's canon is no more. Now he's transformed into a mutated and monstrous beast on a roaring rampage of revenge.
In the latest movie from the minds behind Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, Bambi has become a terrifyingly feral creature with no problem brutally killing people in part of his quest for vengeance after his mother is killed. Variety shared the first trailer for Bambi: The Reckoning on Wednesday. You can watch the video embedded above.
The story of Bambi didn't actually originate in the 1942 Disney film, instead coming from the Austrian novel Bambi, a Life in the Woods by Felix Salten, which is in the public domain. Bambi: The Reckoning is one of many recently released public domain horror titles. It is also part of the Twisted Childhood Universe (Tcu) created by Rhys Frake-Waterfield and Scott Chambers.

As seen in the trailer, a grief-stricken Bambi — who has mutated to have a mouth full of sharp teeth — goes on the prowl after the death of his mother. The first trailer for the next installment in the Poohniverse, officially known as The Twisted Childhood Universe (Tcu), has been released. After Winnie-the-Pooh and Peter Pan, Bambi is the next beloved children's character to get the horror parody treatment from the team behind Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.
Variety debuted the official trailer for Bambi: The Reckoning, as well as the synopsis for the horror movie, which reads as follows: "In this very twisted take on the Bambi story, our deer — now not simply grief-stricken over the death of his mother but also mutated, effing enormous and sporting an array of sharp, terrifying teeth — embarks on a deadly rampage through the woods seeking revenge. He throws cars into the air with his giant antlers, charges into otherwise lovely-looking country houses and chases after holidaying families in caravans. Bambi is back—but not in the way you remember. The beloved deer from Disney’s classic tale has taken a terrifying turn in Bambi: The Reckoning, a new horror movie from the creators of Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey.
The first trailer for the film has arrived, and it shows a much darker version of Bambi. No longer just a grieving fawn, he has transformed into a massive, mutated creature with sharp teeth and an uncontrollable thirst for revenge. As he rampages through the woods, Bambi throws cars, crashes into homes, and hunts down innocent families.
The film promises plenty of blood, violent attacks, and shocking moments—making it completely unsuitable for children.

In the wake of two Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey films and Peter Pan’s Neverland Nightmare, the “Poohniverse” will expand this year with Bambi: The Reckoning.
The official trailer for Bambi: The Reckoning has been unleashed by Variety this morning, and you can check it out below. According to the outlet, it’s releasing in Summer 2025.
Bambi: The Reckoning is described as “Cujo meets Jurassic Park,” and it looks to bring something different to the trend of public domain horror movies. While they’ve largely been masked slashers up to this point, we’re getting a full-on creature feature from this one, which feels more akin to something you would’ve gotten from Syfy back in the Sharktopus days.

Stephen King is renowned as a horror author whose works—novels and screen adaptations—have terrified many fans of all generations. We’re familiar with Carrie, Salem’s Lot, The Shining, and Pet Sematary, but many are probably unaware of what influenced him to write these books.

King had a very intriguing but mysterious childhood. He reportedly had experiences that were so macabre they laid down the path for him toward becoming a master of horror. While this might have been instrumental to his career, he credits one Disney movie for inspiring him to write his novels.

Peter Pan and Winnie the Pooh existing in the same cinematic universe might seem strange enough, but how about both of them going on murderous rampages? Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare, directed and written by Scott Chambers, is the third installment in Jagged Edge Productions'"Twisted Childhood Universe" (Tcu). Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare was preceded by Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023) and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey II (2024), which, if you could not discern from the titles, see the beloved children's character Winnie the Pooh (originally from the books by A.A. Milne and E. H Shephard) turn violent.
The Tcu, or "Poohniverse" as it is also called, is all the brain-child of British filmmaker Rhys Frake-Waterfield. When Winnie the Pooh (which was originally published in 1926) entered the public domain in 2022, the material became fair game for a horror spin. Now, the Razzie-winning series shows no signs of stopping and...

The Twisted Childhood Universe has been one of the most fascinating introductions to the horror genre in recent years, and Peter Pan's Neverland Nightmare is its latest installment. Establishing a shared cinematic universe is hard. Take Warner Bros. and DC's attempt at matching the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, for instance. Though it had some commercial successes, the DC Extended Universe ultimately disintegrated over the course of several recent box office bombs that included superheroic flop "The Flash." Then, there was Universal, with its ill-fated Dark Universe, which would have seen updated takes on classic Universal monsters inhabiting a shared timeline that would ultimately lead to some sort of monster team-up. Unfortunately, the whole thing failed almost instantly with the disappointment that was 2017's "The Mummy."
Now, with the almighty MCU even struggling to maintain its dominance amid the deluge of "content" being pumped out in its name, it seems harder than ever to construct and maintain a successful shared cinematic universe. But that won't stop horror director Rhys Frake-Waterfield, who is now threatening an entire interconnected...

The Bambi horror movie started filming back in January, aiming to make its way out into the world sometime this fall, and today a teaser trailer has arrived online. The brand new trailer for Bambi: The Reckoning has arrived, giving a first look at the latest Poohniverse installment entry that puts a horror twist on a classic children’s property.
It follows “Xana (Roxanne McKee) and her son Benji (Tom Mulheron) who find themselves in a car wreck and soon hunted down by the vicious killing machine, Bambi.”
That’s right. There’s nothing sweet and doe-eyed about Bambi this time. See for yourself in the teaser trailer below.
Filming on Bambi: The Reckoning kicked off on January 6, 2024 in England with a planned Fall 2024 release.
Director Dan Allen (Unhinged) previews, “It’s gonna be terrifying. When people see a deer in the wild after this film they’re gonna run for the hills. This film is about the death of childhoods as much as it’s gonna ruin childhoods Expect bloodshed, tears and rabbits… and one mean killer deer.

The Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey universe will be soon expanding. With big plans for next year, the universe will grow with the standalone film starring the beloved Disney character Bambi in Bambi: The Reckoning.
Umbrella Entertainment has just released the first look at the "vicious killing machine," Bambi. The short teaser, which is only one minute long, is filled with suspense and features only two scenes. One shows two men in the woods, hunting. As one of them tries to hit a bird tied to a tree and misses, the other asks if he ever shot a deer, before reminiscing that he did, once. The suspenseful teaser turns into a different scene, giving the first look at the villainous character as it attacks a car, perhaps the one the two hunters were driving.
