It had been originally announced last year that Tim Burton is attached to direct a new take on Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, and a massive update has now been provided.

Variety reports that Margot Robbie (Barbie) is in “early conversations” to star in Tim Burton’s Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, though a deal hasn’t closed at this time. If Robbie comes on board to star, she would also produce through her company LuckyChap Entertainment.

Variety details, “Gillian Flynn penned a first draft of the screenplay, but has since exited the project due to other commitments. The producing team is currently searching for a new writer, and Robbie’s involvement as the lead actor would depend on the final version.”

The original Attack of the 50 Foot Woman was directed by Nathan Hertz and released in 1958. The low-budget movie was remade by HBO in 1993, with Daryl Hannah in the title role.

Per Variety, Robbie has entered into early discussions regarding a potential leading role in acclaimed filmmaker Tim Burton's upcoming remake of Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman. Barbie star Margot Robbie may be teaming up with Edward Scissorhands helmer Tim Burton for her next major role.

According to film industry insider Jeff Sneider of The InSneider, it's rumored that progress is moving forward on Burton's planned remake of the sci-fi horror classic Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. The remake was first reported in February 2024, when it was also revealed that Gillian Flynn (Gone Girl) was attached to work on the script. There has been a lack of fruitful updates in the year and a half since.

Now, per Sneider, Robbie and her LuckyChap banner are becoming part of the project to help produce. Additionally, it's reported that Robbie is also expected to star in the movie's titular role. Fan-favorite filmmaker Tim Burton confirms that there are currently no plans for one hotly-anticipated Warner Bros. remake.

Per Deadline, Burton downplayed rumors that he and Warner Bros. are working together on a remake of the 1958 classic sci-fi horror film, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. When the project came up during an interview at the Marrakech Film Festival, Burton stated plainly, "I have no real projects at the moment." Hinting that it still might happen but that he won't know for sure until filming begins, Burton added, "One thing I learned very early on is that until I’m on the set doing something I don’t know if I’m doing it."

Tim Burton has been hired to take the helm on the remake of the science fiction flick ‘Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman’ for Warner Bros.

The horror story follows a wealthy heiress who grows into a giant after an alien encounter and exacts revenge on her cheating husband. Details on whether the remake will bear a resemblance to the 1958 original are currently unknown.

Burton is directing from a script penned by Gillian Flynn. Burton will also produce alongside Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper. Kai Dolbashian serves as executive producer.

The original, directed by Nathan Hertz and made for a reported $88K, starred Allison Hayes as an abused socialite who grows to giant size because of an alien encounter and an aborted murder attempt. She goes after her cheating husband with revenge on her mind.

It certainly sounds like something Burton can have fun with, and Flynn is no stranger to stories of complicated male/female dynamics.
